Fox has premiered a new, extended clip from AVATAR online titled "Thanador Chase," which features, well...a Thanador chase. What exactly is a Thanador? It's that alien-looking monster that you've glimpsed in the trailer chasing Sam Worthington's character. This clip is basically that scene as the monster ambushes their troop and chases Worthington through the jungle.

I've watched this clip a few times now as it's the first real long-form, unedited clip from AVATAR that's been online. It's mostly pretty impressive but I'm just surprised that Fox has decided to premiere it online. This seems like something that would've been better off running on HDTV during Sunday football (though to be fair, this footage was part of the "Avatar Day" presentation). There were some small issues I had with the animation on Worthington but there were also parts (when he's firing the gun and later, swimming underwater) that were actually exquisitely rendered. Take a look below and let me know what you think...

cut scene
It's just a ridiculous high def cutscene from a computer game. A qualitatively similar experience to watching the Left 4 Dead introductions (which are wonderful) but I struggle to see how this will revolutionise anything. To be honest however, the ballsy "come back with your friends" dialogue is a bit too much "woah dude" for me and it seems to be apealing to a market that seems of teenage Halo lovers. I'm not sure about this film basically.

its not EXACTLY the same thing from the t-rex roar in jurassic, but they may be using the same mix of animals to create the sound effect in the first place.

I thought this was supposed to be photorealistic? I'm sorry but it's so far from that. They are fantastic effects, but I wouldn't say they were the best effects ever. I gotta say, I am very dissapointed atm. Using the Roar from jurassic park is bloody ridiculous.

Starship Troopers was probably the best effects ever. That blew me away back in the day. And of course, Jurassic Park.

awesome work
That clip looks fantastic. Finally being able to see a clip thats more than a half second edit put everything in context. That stuff looks absolutely amazing. For the most visually overanalysied movie ever it was still impressive as hell.

This will rock.

It looks great. BUT the actually blocking of the chase seemed underwhelming. And weaver's line of dialog in the beginning is weak "Run definitely, RUN! Way to state the obvious. I can tell already this won;t have the dialog development that Cameron's films like Terminator 2 and Aliens have.

you have to take the scene that leads up to it into context. he asks her if he should run from one beast, she says no and stay still, than that thin pops out, and he asks her again, so shes says run definitely run! its not that cheesey dude.

Don't knock the dialog, especially when you hear it out of context.

The actual scene starts with a large creature charging towards Jake, and Weaver shouts "Don't Run!" Then she tells him to stand his ground, because running will only make it chase him.

Seen it all before...
Sure the effects are incredible. I haven't seen any better... but it's also not something NEW, different, or daring. Guy get's chased by big crazy animal, loses his weapon, jumps off waterfall and miraculously lives... so what? Is this supposed to make me excited for the movie? And yeah, total T-rex from JP. Sad if you ask me.

How about: guy gets chased by a big animal, but does...

How about: guy gets chased by a big animal, but does a back flip, lands on its back, rips its brain out and eats it - thereby acquiring it's powers and saving Pandora?

fuck that's so stupid...
...I mean, why does that stupid animal have to sound IDENTICAL to T-rex from Jurassic Park? You'd think Cameron would have noticed this when discussing the sound effects. I am excited about this movie, but I just know that when I'm at the theater and hearing that OBVIOUS t-rex roar coming out of that animal's mouth, I'm going to be rolling my eyes until they fall out of my head.

I can't wait for this one!
I’m sold. I wasn’t sure until I watched this clip. As far as I’m concerned it couldn’t look any realer if Cameron had gone to Pandora and filmed it live. I thought the use of slowmo was artful and critical to the scene and not pandering in any way.

so.. the CGI is CGI. I don't see anything different in the creatures or land designs. The Avatar itself looks pretty fantastic, but I can still tell I'm looking at a computer generated image. BTW..Cameron using the T-Rex roar from Jurassic Park makes him lose major points for creativity.

wasn't really anything we haven't seen before. It looks like King Kong or JP3, just prettier with more pixels and a blue robert pattison.

I hope the film is good, though admittedly, so far the parts don't seem to add up to an intriguing sum.

I have to admit I am impressed. The avatar's movements looked pretty real, not that CGI smoothness you see in other movies. Not bad.

3D and Predator
It's a good clip but I feel like a few of the shots (like the slow-motion ones) are "3-D gimmicks," i.e. they're intended to work better in 3-D, and while I'm not necessarily opposed to 3-D, I don't think any filmmaker should go out of his/her way to play into 3-D, if you know what I mean. The fact is, "Avatar" will mostly be playing on non-3D screens when it debuts, and to people not viewing...

And surely I'm not the only one who thought of Arnold diving over the waterfall in "Predator" at the end of this scene? Someone should splice those scenes together for the lolz.

I disagree. Slow motion isn't a 3d gimmick. It's there to create a mood. Stuff flying at the camera is more of a gimmick.

The slow-mo shots will look pretty much the same in 2D or 3D.

The slow motion seems off, but this Avatar character is the most realistic CGI character I've ever seen. For the most part the Avatar looks like an actual guy in practical makeup running from a CGI monster. Amazing.

I didn't watch the whole thing to be honest as I didn't want to spoil the movie, but some of the facial effects look amazing. Look at Sigourney's avatar!!!
