Looks like Johnny Depp and The Lone Ranger will ride after all

09.23.2011

Hi-Yo, Silver, or what?

Disney's big-screen, big-budget version of THE LONE RANGER has been in and out of the stable in the last few months as the project tried to rope in an exorbitant budget. But apparently the principal talent and the studio have finally wrangled the price tag to something acceptable.

Deadline says that everyone "is likely to have everything resolved by next week, and can start rehiring crew so that the picture will be ready to begin production in January or February."

Johnny Depp will wear the headband of faithful sidekick Tonto while Armie Hammer slips on the mask of the titular pulp hero, and director Gore Verbinski (without whom Depp would have walked) will handle the pricey Old West adventure. British actress Ruth Wilson (BBC's "Luther") is expected to play the female lead in the Jerry Bruckheimer production.

It remains to be seen if the film's initial release date of Dec. 21, 2012 (or the bizarre idea to have the duo battling werewolves) is still part of the plan.

Extra Tidbit: I must admit the studio and talent seem more interested in seeing this movie become reality than I am -- but what about you?

First, what non-retirement home guest gives half a shit about The Lone Ranger? Second, am I the only person burned out on Johnny Depp?

You'd think Disney would have paid attention to the Green Hornet apathy and passed on this thing. Radio age hero reboot where the side-kick is better than the main "hero" makes most want to puke. Johnny Depp or no.

Green Hornet's failure had nothing to do with a radio age hero, and everything to do with a fat, unfunny main character that was loathsome from beginning to end.

Right now, Depp is the biggest star in the world. They're thinking franchise, and expect to make billions. When it comes to profit, there's a huge difference between Seth Rogan and Johnny Depp. Huge.

Pretty sure that Depp only did the last Pirates movie so he could do this. And from what I have heard, he put the kabosh on any more until this was resolved.

Im sure the werewolves are skinwalkers from Native American lore since this film has always been planned to be more about Tonto

Thank you. Nothing bizarre about it. It's brilliant, just like Elliot/Rossio's re-working of the Davy Jones lore was.

They already made a Lone Ranger movie in 1981 and it was a box office bomb winning two razzies..So no I could care less about another attempt at Lone Ranger and the big screen.

Yes, a failed, 30 year old attempt at the Lone Ranger is the decider for any and all future attempts at box office success with the franchise.

I think a Verbinski-helmed Lone Ranger flick is a great idea. I can get behind Depp as Tonto but not keen on the idea of Tonto being the main character if that is the case. Also i'm not sold on Armie Hammer as the Ranger, but i could be convinced otherwise.
The whole supernatural vibe they seem to be going for leaves me cold though.
I'd prefer a straight up 'rollicking western' with Indiana Jones-esque action set-pieces. No need for excessive CGI and werewolves.

I had an idea about the Lone Ranger vs werewolves ages ago, I envisioned it as a weird crossover graphic novel thing. I mean he is famous for having a gun that shoots silver bullets. Seems like someone would have caught on to that sooner.

I'll wait to judge...

I won't judge yet until I see or hear some more specifics on the project. Also, I'm not ashamed to say...I'll watch Depp in just about anything...

Bring on the hate.... lol ;)

Cowboys & Werewolves?

Visually, with Depp and Verbinsky I think this could be cool. Not to thrilled about the direction of the story, but I'll keep an open mind until seeing a trailer. Depp's last few Disney films, Alice and Pirates 4, weren't great despite making boatloads of cash, and I hope this turns out better.

I think this will be good actually. Everyone involved in the project seems very passionate about getting it made, and Verbinski for the most part is a pretty great director. Hammer seems to be legit and Depp is obviously capable of being great.

Word was Disney was looking for an excuse to shut down production due to the costs, but didn't have anything to back it up until Cowboys and Aliens failed so badly at the box office. Right now, I'm more interested in seeing Depp in The Rum Diary than I am to see him as Tonto.

Extra tidbit: I'm with you, Dave. Barely interested in this at all. Depp is amazing, and I'm semi interested in seeing him and Armie work together, but everything else about this stinks. Disney? Bruckheimer? Verbinski? No thanks. That's a shit-soaked triumvirate that I gave up on long ago.

Werewolves could be cool...

If they were in a different western movie. Why throw werewolves into the Lone Ranger mix, where they do not belong.
Instead, just make a new western film where cowboys are battling werewolves. I think it could be cooler than Cowboys & Aliens.

Would you have said "Why throw octopus-men and heathen gods into the Pirates of the Caribbean mix, where they do not belong." ?

No idea what to expect, but i'm really confused why people are excited to see them battling werewolves. If you're going to do that, mine as well make it zombies like every other movie that wants to add something "novel"

I'm glad Johnny returned! It would have been cool to see George Clooney as the lone ranger though.
