Lost's Evangeline Lilly joins Peter Jackson's The Hobbit, Barry Humphries to play the Goblin King

Jun. 20, 2011by: George Merchan

Director Peter Jackson continues adding bodies to his HOBBIT films. Hot off the heels from last week's casting of Smaug and Bard, the latest straight from the the Kiwi filmmaker himself is that "Lost" star Evangeline Lilly (REAL STEEL) and Barry Humphries (a.k.a. Dame Edna Everage) have been cast as Woodland Elf 'Tauriel' and the 'Goblin King' respectively. Here's Jackson (via Facebook):

Yikes! I can finally get back to some postings! We've finished our first block of shooting and moved straight into location scouting. More on that soon... But today, I'm thrilled to announce two new cast members who will be joining us for our second block of shooting.

Evangeline Lilly will be playing a new characterthe Woodland Elf, Tauriel. Her name means 'daughter of Mirkwood' and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.) What is not a secret is how talented and compelling an actress Evangeline is; we are thrilled and excited she will be the one to bring our first true Sylvan Elf to life.

I'm also highly excited that Barry Humphries will be portraying the Goblin King, in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum. Barry is perhaps best known for his business and social connections as the long-time manager of Dame Edna Everage. He has also been an ardent supporter of the rather misunderstood and unfairly maligned Australian politician, Sir Les Patterson. However, in his spare time, Barry is also a fine actor, and we're looking forward to seeing him invest the Goblin King with the delicate sensitivity and emotional depth this character deserves.

So we're getting a brand new character addition on top of what looks to be another motion-captured performance. While the latter isn't exactly surprising considering PJ's proclivity towards using tech, what do you guys make of the filmmakers' decision to create a new character? Will 'Tauriel' serve a larger purpose come the second film THERE AND BACK AGAIN? Let us know what you think!

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY opens December 14, 2012.
Extra Tidbit: This wouldn't be Lilly's first encounter with a Hobbit...

Before I even read this I had a feeling she would be playing an elf. She just has that elf look about her I guess.

If shes a new character, why couldnt they just bring back Liv tyler instead like they did Orlando Bloom?....I fucking hate Evangeline Lilly, she was the only actress/actor on Lost that didnt give a shit about the show. And she was annoying as shit to boot!

I'm starting to worry about these movies. Creating your own characters? Really? The Hobbit is fine. Why mess with it?

Also, Lily is a mediocre actor at best. There's a reason she hasn't done jack shit since Lost. She's just not that great.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I want these movies to be as great as LOTR, but this news combined with the unnecessary LOTR cast reunion the Hobbit is starting to turn into...

I agree The Hobbit needs absolutely no messing with. It is a perfect tale that needs no additions to make the story more marketable. But if they make the Dol Goldur and White Council parts work, that should be amazing.

She is very far away from being the most annoying character in "LOST". Try Michael, Charlotte, and Ana Lucia.

She looks elfish and he looks like a goblin. Just as long as Jackson is not making any major changes and inserting a romantic subplot.

Yeah, this makes me happy. Maybe she's trying to setup her own spinoff franchise, since Real Steel most likely won't, uh, be successful in any way whatsoever.

Cool, Evangeline makes up for Saoirse Ronan not being able to be in the movies.

Still have faith in Peter Jackson

not sure how an elf maiden is going to fit into The Hobbit storyline, but Barry Humphries is great: he played Bruce the Shark in Finding Nemo ("Fish are friends, not food!").

I have great faith in PJ and all the great talent that is involved in this production! I'm sure that all additions they make up, serves a purpose that just makes the movies that much better! Can't wait, and I'll definietly be there at the first midnight screening! :D
