Love the new Mission: Impossible trailer? Rewatch all the M:I trailers here!

03.23.2015

At this point you've no doubt rewatched the new trailer for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION about 5 - 10 times at a minimum and if you're anything like me then it's likely got you in the mood for all things MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE. I can remember seeing the trailer for Brian DePalma's franchise kick-off in 1996 and getting those awesome movie "tinglies" when Tom Cruise latched onto the bullet train from an exploding helicopter and thinking "Holy shit, that is so badass." It was the sounding horn for one of the most lucrative and awe-inspiring franchises ever made and one that continues to get better with age. From John Woo's beautifully indulgent MI:2 to J.J. Abrams intensely thrilling MI:III to Brad Bird's absolute perfection that is MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL, each film in the series boasts some of best chopped trailers leading right up to Christopher McQuarrie's bid to the franchise with MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION.

So, kick back, light the fuse, and revisit all the badassery that is the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE franchise in trailer form in anticipation for what looks to be another solid entry.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE (1996):

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE II (2000):

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III (2006):

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL (2011):

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION (2015):

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION opens on July 31st, 2015.

Extra Tidbit: What's YOUR favorite Mission: Impossible film so far? Ghost Protocol feels like the perfect combination of all the films to me, but I love each of them on their own merits as well.

I always go back and forth between the first M:I movie and Ghost Protocol as my favorite in the franchise. These two are easily the best ones. I have a soft spot for M:I2 since I was about 15 when it came out and back then I felt it was "totally awesome". But in all honesty it is probably the weakest of the series and one that really aged poorly. But still a decent popcorn flick. This entire series is just great popcorn fun.

I may be alone here, but I love the first one. It's darker than all the others, and focuses more on the chess match that is espionage. It has a way of making you feel like you can't trust anyone. The scenes of the aquarium restaurant, Langley, and bullet train are simply awesome! That said, all of them are good. I wish more franchises could put the consistency together that the MI franchise has. I would rank them as follows:

1. Mission Impossible
2. MI: Ghost Protocol
3. MI2
4. MI3

4. MI3 (Although this has some of the best scenes of the franchise, I cannot get over never being told what the Rabbit foot is!)

I may put 3 last, but by no means is that anything less than a good movie.

Great franchise

Best scene in the series?
For me it's the opening to M:I 3. So fucking tense. With PSH slowly counting to ten before executing Hunts wife. Love the dialogue and Cruise acting in this scene. His final "...no....no " gets me in the heart every time.

I have a soft spot for 2. To this day I still do the "it's in my jacket pocket... My LEFT jacket pocket."

M:I 3 or Ghost Protocol

I'm a fan of the series as a whole but my two favorites would either be Mission: Impossible 3 or Ghost Protocol. I think it's got something to do with the fact that there's a bit more of a team aspect in those two than in either M:I or M:I 2. Hoffman kills it in 3 as a total snake and that whole bridge scene is phenomenal.

MI:2 had such epic operatic & emotional action for such a bland run-of-the-mill story. I enjoy the hell out of the movie, but those action scenes deserved a far better script.

True. I think it might be done a few times already but back then the scene where Cruise slides alongside his motorcycle while trying to out-maneuver the villains who were chasing him in the third act was amazing!

Ghost Protocol by far!!!

Thoroughly enjoyable all the way from beginning to end. My favorite of the franchise, next to 3, which was good for Philip Seymour Hoffman as the villain. My favorite line from Ghost is when Ethan busts through the glass in the tower, running down the side of the building, and he gets to the end of the rope, and Renner's character yells, "Your rope isn't long enough!" And Ethan replies "NO SHIT!" lol Laugh every time.

For me, so far the CIA Vault heist scene of M:I 1 is still the best. I remember the whole theater went absolutely silent when Krueger dropped the knife once Ethan made it to the ceiling vent. The whole heist scene was breathtaking.

Omg, I can recall my theater being the same way. Edge-of-your-seat scene, for sure.

It really was! I think the whole theater went "Gasp!!" once the knife stuck onto the computer desk.

The CIA vault is great except for one thing. Floor pressure sensors
Temperature sensors
Noise sensors

Unmmm why not just install a basic motion detector (which was SUPER COMMON in 1996). lol

Ha I had a similar experience in the theater. Everyone was silent and then the knife fell and a collective gasp was uttered. Definitely the defining moment for that film by far its most intense and coolest scene.

Yeah, great scene. My personal favorite is when they're breaking into the Kremlin (?), and they use that silk screen or whatever to display the image behind them and they trick the guard with the water dripping sound. I'm gonna go watch it again just for kicks! Lol

A guilty pleasure for sure. John Woo is a force to reckon with when it comes to over-stylized action sequences.

I've always loved the trailer for MI2

I know I'm in the minority, but MI2 is my favorite. It's hyper-stylizied with John Woo's distinct visual flair and I even like the Limp Bizkit rendition of the theme (sans lyrics). It borrows the great premise of Hitchcock's Notorious and straight up copies the scenario of Last of the Mohicans, where the protagonist is forced to abandon the girl because he's outnumbered, only to come and save her later. They even steal Daniel Day Lewis' line "Just stay alive!" Daniel Day Lewis jumped off a

I just feel like the 3rd and 4th ones lacked a signature style and were more generic agreeable action flicks with lots of humor and banter. I also like how in the 2nd one, the "impossible" factor is really played up with Hunt having to take on a whole army by himself, whereas in the 3rd and 4th, he has a whole team in the field.

Idk, that whole scene on the motorcycle where Ethan is fighting the main villian, and they race towards each other, jump off their bikes and slam into each other in midair. Yeah, totally didn't age well, and is even worse now than it was then. Weakest of the franchise. Easily. But, to each their own.
