Love, time and death visit Will Smith in the trailer for Collateral Beauty

When a successful New York advertising executive (Will Smith) experiences a deep personal tragedy and retreats from life entirely, his colleagues devise a drastic plan to force him to confront his grief in a surprising and profoundly human way. A touch of A CHRISTMAS CAROL is in store for us today with the trailer for David Frankel's COLLATERAL BEAUTY.

Alright, so this trailer is heavy-handed as hell. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. The trailer knows the audience it's aiming for and it goes for it. Besides, if you're going to make a move with material like this, you could do worse than have the likes of Will Smith, Edward Norton, Keira Knightley, Michael Pena, Kate Winslet and Helen Mirren in your cast. Whether or not the movie is a satisfying watch is another thing entirely!

COLLATERAL BEAUTY opens in theaters on December 16, 2016.

I hope this does well, but it does feel a little kitschy. The comparisons to "A Christmas Carol" are obvious, and I really hope the film extends itself beyond that but...I'm not sure it will. Good luck to Will Smith, though, he's very under appreciated as a dramatic actor.

Will Smith his why I would see this...

Whether it's his bravado, level of fame, or blockbuster roles (or all of the above)... he will always be so under appreciated for his acting ability.

So the trailer looks kind of good. The cast looks great. But I couldn't get around the idea that a black man sees Death and Love as white Englishwomen. Psychologically, it just strikes me as improbable. Imagine if Naomie Harris was Love instead of the character she's playing here. Would people really object to that?

Not sure if I agree with you on the specifics, but, yeah. Kiera Knightly isn't the most inspired choice for Love.

I knew I was probably going to get flack for this. And I don't have any insights into Smith's character, Howard's upbringing. Supposing he was raised in a predominantly black neighborhood there's a good chance he was raised with a black Jesus to help identify with as a kid. I like Helen Mirren a lot, I like Keira Knightley alright. The trailer was actually good. But when he says I saw you in her eyes, I started questioning. You saw HER? Smith can make me believe that Death and Love look like

Smith can make me believe that Death and Love look like white women to him, but common sense makes me think he'd be the exception.

I am not personally black, so maybe I'm not the best person to make this argument. But I do think it would've been very easy for them to cast non-whites in those roles without it looking like they are trying to make a point. You've still got Norton and Winslet and Pena.

This looks pretty good. Say what you will about Will Smith, his blockbusters really tend to be hit or miss. But he usually nails these types of dramas.

Looks really good, heartfelt, and uplifting. Like what they did with the concept and making it a somewhat modern version of 'A Christmas Carol'. Hell of a cast, too.
