Lucasfilm president confirms that a new Indiana Jones film is coming

05.05.2015

Disney developing a new Indiana Jones film at some point is a given, but as of now, we've had nothing but rumors flying around left and right. From Chris Pratt staring as the titular hero to Steven Spielberg even directing the next actor to take up the whip, we've had plenty to chew one, but now we have some official words from the Lucasfilm president herself, Kathleen Kennedy. Vanity Fair's Bruce Handy recently spoke with the woman regarding all things STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS and the topic of Indy came up.

Bruce Handy's note regarding Kathleen Kennedy and Indiana Jones:

In buying the company, Disney also got rights, for better or worse, to less-storied Lucasfilm properties, among them Willow and Radioland Murders. A bigger prize is the Indiana Jones franchise. Kennedy confirmed rumors that another Indy movie “will one day be made inside this company. When it will happen, I’m not quite sure. We haven’t started working on a script yet, but we are talking about it.”

Obviously Lucasfilm is pretty occupied with all things STAR WARS for the next few years, so it's not a surprise that there isn't any immediacy to bringing a new Indy flick to life. While Disney is pumping out STAR WARS flicks left and right with THE FORCE AWAKENS, ROGUE ONE and the new Boba Fett movie on the horizon, they seem to be doing fans right by hiring passionate filmmakers with a great love for the saga. If they can pour as much love and attention into Indy that J.J. Abrams seemingly has with THE FORCE AWAKENS, I think we're in good hands. Also, Nick Offerman for Indiana Jones. Just sayin'. He could whittle his way out of any situation.

I would LOVE for Lucasfilm to present the next Indy movie with a a pulpy trailer like this one!

I know Chris Pratt is the front-runner, but my pick would be Karl Urban. I hope they do something along the lines of Godfather Part II, with the story switching between the "present" with Harrison Ford as Indy and an adventure from his past with a younger character as Indy. Give Old Indy a couple of action beats in his portion of the story but let most of the action be handled by the younger Indy.

Urban has the look but I doubt that he can carry off the charm. He's a fantastic Dredd but a terrible Bones he's too much of a hard ass to be Indiana Jones

You know... What about an Indiana Jones prequel starring a young Henry Jones SENIOR?

Henry Senior would probably be a bit more professorial. I could dig it, but I doubt a lot of other people could because he's not the great adventurer. "Look what you did!"

They just need to do what they attempted in Crystal Skull, pass the mantle. Just like Indy got his Fedora from someone else, he can pass it on to a younger character. He should be in the next one or the reboot at least to hand down the Fedora to the next generation.

No Ford, No Jones.

Watching any other actor play Indiana Jones would be like watching an 8 year old in an Indiana Jones Halloween costume. It just wouldn't work for me, because they just don't make men like Harrison Ford anymore.

I think Ford has one more in him, to do a 1960s era film while in his 70s.

After that, I think he could get away with voicing an animated Indiana Jones film, something with the same level of realism as Beowulf, which you could then set anytime. I'd love to see one set in the

I'd love to see one set in the 40s, and take place in Japan, Asia, or Polynesia, with the fascist Japanese as the baddies in the South Pacific theater. You could then have a riveting rosie type for the chick. And it could be a great reason to bring back an adult Short Round.

If he can't do anymore, I'd really rather just see the character retired.

It's thinking and fan push like this that gets us the appalling crystal skull - let go of Harrison Ford and let others have a go - as I said below people with nostalgia will always have the first 3 but I don't want an 80 year old man running around ok screen pretending to be a 50 year old hero

The next crusade

People make some good points on here - I'm liking the older ford in flashbacks especially given the originals seemed to be done in the 40/50's eras. I have to say I don't want a nearly 80 year old Ford running around pretending to kick ass, I'd rather they recast and look at Chris Pratt. For me he's a prime candidate given his current star status and I think if JW does well he could be a shoe in. For those still caught up in the nostalgia of wanting to keep one actor to one role, I get it I

For those still caught up in the nostalgia of wanting to keep one actor to one role, I get it I grew up with Indy too and I love Ford but it's time to move on, like Bond, Kirk and hell even Xavier and Magneto a role can be recast and still be successful. Yes it's great to have those first 3 Indy films to go back to but isn't also great to introduce new people and audiences to a new Indy, it could be worse Indy 4 ending seemed to imply the Fedora would be taken up by Shia!

What they should do is do kind of a reverse of what was done in The Last Crusade. Have Ford play old Indy in the opening sequence, and then have the film flashback to the 1930s with a younger actor playing Indy and the main story begins with a McGuffin related to the opening sequence in some way. That way Ford plays Indy one more time and passes the baton on screen.

Farewell Mr. Ford

Why can't Indiana Jones be the American James Bond? They are both suave adventures that go on none sequential missions. James Bond has his suits and Martinis, Indiana Jones has his whip and Fedora. There is a mythos to the character that should always be respected but Indiana Jones is the perfect candidate for rebooting. Harrison Ford will always be the original and arguably the best, no one can take that away from him. Just like Sean Connery was the original and arguably best Bond. But guess

But guess what, I liked Roger Moore as Bond, and i like Daniel Craig as Bond. In fact none of the actors i felt have been a bad Bond (just some better than others). Harrison Ford can still kick butt, but as an adventuring, womanizing lead, not so much. It's time to continue the series with some fresh air. Reboot is not a dirty word. Lord of the Rings, Skyfall, Batman Begins, X-Men First Class, Star Trek, and Man of Steel have all been worth while reboots. If we dont reboot, we run the risk of another Kingdom of Crystal Skulls. Remember, that was a direct sequel that had Ford, Spielberg, and Lucas. I hear people harping for another sequel instead of reboot and all i hear is people asking for another Crystal Skull

Get Frank Darabont on the phone and un-fuck this franchise ASAP.
And can we talk about what really matters here, that Radioland Murders 2 petition-makers can FINALLY (possibly) get their wish!? Hahaha.

Up until a few years ago, you only had seen 1 Capt. Kirk. That seemed to work out well with a new actor. Be open minded to moving on.

Let the legacy continue. Sean Connery left the mantle of Bond, so now Ford will do the same for Jones.

Star Wars, for me, was something that could continue on and explore more stories in that universe--eventually, without the presence of original characters. But Indiana Jones seems like a thing that should just be left alone. That character isn't necessarily a James Bond type that can be replaced on and on. I'd see what they do with it, of course, but I don't think we need it like we need Episode 7 (and yes, I argue we need it after the PT)

It's ironic that you say Indiana Jones isn't like James Bond, BC Spielberg did the series as an answer to the Bond series. He wanted to direct a Bond film but EON productions felt he was too high profile. Lucas offered his buddy a shot to direct the Indiana series as their own Bond series. Why else do you think Sean Connery was chosen to play his father? Lol
