M. Night Shyamalan hints that Unbreakable 2 may be happening

May. 30, 2013by: Alex Maidy

UNBREAKABLE is far and away my favorite M. Night Shyamalan movie. Since first seeing it, I have consistently ranked it as one of the best superhero movies of all time because of the sheer difficulty in bringing original superheroes to the big screen. Despite his flubs and poor directing choices over the last several years, it would be nice to see him return to a story that was well received by all.

In this interview with MTV, Shyamalan was once again asked about the potential for an UNBREAKABLE sequel. Back in 2010, he shot down notions of a second film saying that he was adapting his villain for UNBREAKABLE 2 into the third of his NIGHT CHRONICLES movies (DEVIL is the only one of those made to date). Now, though, he seems to have changed his tune. When asked about the status of a sequel, Shyamalan said it is "on his agenda" and

As long as it can be connected to something that I'm feeling right now, then I'll work for me.

If you watch the video of his answer, Shyamalan does not seem to be bullshitting and sounds like he actually is thinking about UNBREAKABLE 2. Of all of his films, UNBREAKABLE is the only one that could really have an organic continuation to the story. I would love to see Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson reprise their roles. Even visiting these characters 15 years later and seeing how their roles as hero and villain have developed would be fascinating.

I just hope Shyamalan doesn't get in his own way in writing the script.

M.Night should not be allowed to write another script ever again. Leave Unbreakable as his best work, don't ruin it with a sequel.

Unbreakable was great, can't imagine M Night would be able to do it justice with a sequel since the guy's basically unable to make good movies now.

I love Unbreakable, but Shyamalan should just leave it alone. He's made so much crap since then I just have no confidence in the guy. To be honest, Willis is getting a bit old to reprise that role as well. Shame but true.

I know he had orignially planned for unbreakable to be a trilogy but since the first one didnt do to good (box office wise) it was scrapped. I loved the first one, now since its been a long time since the first one came out I kinda think it should be left alone. M Night doesnt really have a good track record these days so I wouldnt know how a second one would turn out. But if he does go with it lets hope we get a worthy sequal.

Yes, please

Love Unbreakable. Everything about it. A sequel would still be warmly welcomed even after all these years. Forget about M.Night's newer stuff. Go back to what first made him a marvel.

M. Night should be put out to pasture. Everything he touches turns to crap. Do not let him direct anything else, especially something that was decent. He will sully the good name. Fire him from all movies. Now. I can't even explain how terrible he is.

has to happen

Maybe the only real way for Shyamalan to redeem himself, fans love the film, including myself, I believe it his best movie. He always said he intended it as a trilogy.

There was a time M. Night was trying to get his hands on the Superman property, about 10 years ago, and I really wanted him to get it since he had such passion for the character and at that point had an excellent track record as a director. Now I'm thrilled he didn't get it because it likely would have been a bigger travesty than Superman Returns.

It would be great if this gets made. Unbreakable is definitely his best movie to date, and I would love to see another story from this world. Frankly I think a sequel to Unbreakable is the only movie M. Night has left in him that would actually be good. And I think he knows it too, so that's probably why he's holding off on it. He'll try to make as much money in the interim by doling out shit like Last Airbender and The Happening, and apparently After Earth, and when he truly has nothing

Just what I've always wanted: a once talented director going back and shitting all over his one decent accomplishment.

Unbreakable was great

However with all the crap he has put out sine (save for the 6th sense and maybe signs) I would just think it would end up awful and would ruin the first movies legacy

The Sixth Sense actually came before Unbreakable. His only two good movies were released a year apart from each other, followed by a lot of not-so-good movies. We'll see how After Earth is, but I'm not sure he has another good movie in him. I think Unbreakable might have been his last.

He said he'd never wanted to do franchises or sequels when he was interviewed during his Signs promotion back in 2002. I guess he lied.

Yeah, things were different then. Even The Last Airbender would be considered a franchise, though he ruined it before it had a chance to have a sequel.

I'd be excited for this if it's the same M Night that brought us the first movie. I'm starting to think that some time after The Village (the last M Night movie I actually liked) the man was abducted by aliens and replaced with a terrible clone...WHAT A TWIST!!! Seriously though it's getting harder and harder to defend this guy. I've hated everything he's done after The Village but everything before that was SO DAMN GOOD! I completely agree that Unbreakable is his best movie and its honestly

Seriously though it's getting harder and harder to defend this guy. I've hated everything he's done after The Village but everything before that was SO DAMN GOOD! I completely agree that Unbreakable is his best movie and its honestly gets better with each viewing. His films used to move me in a way that no others did at the time and he's also one of the reasons I decided to pursue film making. I will defend 6th Sense, Unbreakable, Signs and even The Village to the day I die but I just can't get behind any of his recent films. Such a shame...

If M Night is serious about doing this he has to realize THIS IS HIS LAST CHANCE! If he knocks it out of the park then he could be back on top, but if he drops the ball like he's done for the last 10 years then this could be the movie to finally break him (no pun intended). I would hope that Bruce and Sam will only do it if the script is good but seeing the films they've done recently (especially Willis) I don't really trust them either. I guess what I'm really just torn on this idea. There is definitely potential if done right but if done wrong it could ruin the first movie.

It think it would be impossible for him to make a sequel that wouldn't take away from the greatness of the first. He is not the same filmmaker he was then.

God, remember the days when this guy was (kinda) the next Kubrick or Hitchcock? Now he's like, the next liquor store clerk.

I've been waiting for this fo years!! Back in the day, the buzz was huge disappointment when he said there wasn't going to be a sequel. I can only imagine that the haters will crawl out of the woodwork now and say it's not a good idea.

whoa!!

I liked Unbreakable in a slow dreary kinda way and its one of his better movies, which really isn't saying too much though at this point,....but for the love of all things sacred, MAKE A DECENT MOVIE WILL YA?????? PLEASE, you keep putting garbage after garbage into the theaters and its received as much, doesn't that say something to you SHAMAWEIRD??? and no, your movies won't get better with age, trust me, they mostly suck!! I know you want your own mythology but your going about it all wrong

I know you want your own mythology but your going about it all wrong man. Give the people a movie they can like and understand...its doesn't have to be a MEGA success or fantastic movie like The Sixth Sense, but it should be a little better than the first Unbreakable...that's all, dat it mang...dat it!!!
After Earth looks like its going to be a DISASTER!! In a day where sci-fi movies are all the rage and if you gave this movie just a little bit more of a good story, not even great man, good!! Then people would be piling in the theaters to see it, now that its received about the worst reviews that a movie can get, I'm not sure if a sequel is going to be possible for you my friend....Your blowing it, BIG TIME!! I don't know how you screwed up a simple science fiction movie that for all things intended shouldn't have been too difficult to adapt, but maybe that wasn't the issue; IDK maybe your story from the get go was fraught with disaster....Its sad man...really sad. I was so excited to this movie too, the one in the theaters now I mean.

Shymalan has made so many bad films at this point, and after once again reading poor reviews about "After Earth", that part of me thinks he should leave well enough alone. If he would have written unbreakable 2 back when he was kind of a golden boy, I'd have way more faith and excitement than I do now. I've said it a million times that I think he'd be a way better author than a filmmaker. His films would make better books.
