Maher finds God

Bill Maher is a shark. He sinks his teeth into the establishment, rips out a chunk, and spits it out. What? What the hell did I just say? I was in English major in university and that was my attempt at a metaphor. That was bullshit! I’ll just get on with the story and save you all the confusion of me trying to be a good writer.

Bill Maher has been working on a documentary on religion with Larry Charles, BORAT director and ENTOURAGE, SEINFELD and CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM writer/producer/director (holy shit, that’s a resume) that may be entitled RELIGULOUS. The film will be an exploration of religion in the world today, and Maher’s own take on it. He had this to say to Larry King about the project:

“I hope people laugh. We’ve shown ten minutes. That’s all we have so far, we’re still cutting it together. But the ten minutes we’ve shown, and I’ve seen it shown to audiences twice, they laugh so hard because the topic of religion is just so inherently funny. I mean, politicians are funny because they promise things that they can never deliver on. And the gap between what they promise and what they deliver is great fun for humor – for people like Mark Twain to people of our own day have demonstrated. What religious people promise: Your own planet? [Laughs] C’mon, that’s a little beyond social security!”

“We talked to everybody. We went everywhere. We went to every place where there is religion. We went to Vatican City. We went to Jerusalem. We went to Salt Lake City. And I think I’ve insulted everybody!”

Bill Maher insulting people? That’s weird. This is something I’m really looking forward to. It can be kind of like a Michael Moore documentary, only funny. But the opportunity for true insight is there. We’ll keep you updated.
