Man of Steel costume designer Michael Wilkinson talks Batman vs Superman

1 year agoby:

Costume designer Michael Wilkinson (300, WATCHMEN, TRON: LEGACY, MAN OF STEEL) will be back for BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, and while chatting with CineMovie about his most recent work for AMERICAN HUSTLE, he talked about returning for Zack Snyder's upcoming film. Wilkinson is creating new costumes for Ben Affleck's Batman and Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, but says he's also "tweaking" the outfit for Henry Cavill's Superman.

Shooting for BATMAN VS SUPERMAN is scheduled to begin in February of next year, and Michael Wilkinson says the costumes are just about ready for the planned start date.

“We are now in the stage where we’re refining our designs with the last series of camera tests and doing our final tweaks in preparation for shooting.”

Batman's new outfit in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN was apparently influenced by Jim Lee's comics, and most fans can't wait to see the new costume. But what about Wonder Woman's costume? The character's outfit hasn't worked that well in the past outside of comics, but will Warner Bros. still want to go with that classic design, or will it have a more contemporary look? I'm very interested in seeing what Gal Gadot will be sporting in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, and not just because she's incredibly hot.

BATMAN VS SUPERMAN will be in theaters on July 17, 2015.

Extra Tidbit: How do you think Wonder Woman's costume should look in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN? Should it be exactly like it is in the comics, or will it look too silly?

You could design the best f*cking suit on the planet, it doesn't change the fact that Ben Affleck is going to be in it.

Extra TidBit (nipply)

I think Wonder Woman should take a cue from how stupidly exposed Whiplash was in IM3 and do that opposite. Basically dress her like Black Widow. Take the forearm protection and extend it up her entire body. Take the chest plate and extend it up to her neck. Make it a blue-ish black with the gold emblem across the chest. For publicity she might wear the classic costume as PR, but comment on how unsuitable it is for battle and/or how sexist it is.

They are going to have to do something like that or it will look like total shit. Some costumes look good on the page but just don't work in real life

This guy's an excellent costume designer and I hope he has input for the entire DCU on film.

LIke what I'm hearing. Not sure what else they could do to the Superman costume, I really liked the outfit in MoS. Thought everything about it worked really well, but as long as they keep the general aesthetic of that suit than it's all good!
As for Batman, I can't wait to see the new suit! I liked the suit in Nolan's Batman and it worked well for the universe he made. But there have been 2 Batman franchises launched in the last 20 years and we've yet to see a costume that resembles

But there have been 2 Batman franchises launched in the last 20 years and we've yet to see a costume that resembles anything from the comics. I'm anxious to see how well they translate that to film.

As for Wonder Woman, I'm not sure how much I care since I don't think Gal Gadot should be playing her. But if they're going to have her in the costume on screen, then I suggest not going with the costume straight from the comics and have her in something that more closely resembles amazonian battle armor or something.

They could have a viral marketing campaign to reveal the suit, like with the Twitter hashtag reveal of the first photo of Bane for TDKR in 2011.

Wonder Woman costume might be similar to that canceled TV series or somewhere along that line. However, I really hope Batman costume would be similar to Arkham Origins' Batman.

Just don't ruin Superman's suit. I loved the way it looked in Man of Steel.

It's Wonder Woman's outfit that I'm more curious as to how they'll handle but I really can't wait to see the Batsuit and I hope it will go some way to convincing everyone that Ben Affleck will be able to pull off the part. I actually really liked the costume design in Man of Steel, how it kept the essence of the look but enhanced the alien nature of the outfit and made it look just different enough from the traditional spandex look. I do hope Affleck's Batsuit ends up looking like the Arkham
