Man of Steel enlisting Russell Crowe to be Jor-El

Jun. 15, 2011by: Paul Tassi

The MAN OF STEEL cast still has a few roles yet to be filled, and though seemingly only minor ones remain, the film might be getting a big name to come on board for one of them.

Russell Crowe is reportedly in negotiations to star as Jor-El, Superman's Kryptonian father according to Variety who has the exclusive.

If anything, I would have pegged Crowe to play Zod, a role that eventually went to the creeptastic Michael Shannon. But thinking for a moment, I suppose I could see him as the stern and wise Jor-El.

I presume the role wouldn't be too extensive, merely existing in flashbacks or the occasional fortress hologram, but he's not a bad face to add to the film's roster.

But this isn't a done deal it seems, and as soon as I hear more info about it, I'll let you know. In the meantime you can discuss your thoughts on this possible casting.

Extra Tidbit: Are they really going to leave out Luthor, or are they just keeping him a secret?

Will have to wait and see. He's done some good work but he is a bit of a douche. I personally would've gone for Liam Neeson.

Meh

Why didn't they just dig up Brando and dust him off? I guess Crowe will do fine assuming he doesn't throw cell phones at people.

I really hope they leave out Luthor

Please we have seen enough of him, give us something cool to watch Supes hulk out on, not a big pile of rocks.

Good choice, but...

Billy Zane BETTER BE Lex Luthor. Lives depend upon it.

Extra Tidbit

Jorel is my middle name. No, not by coincidence. Also, I approve this casting.

Wow...what an epic image

I can totally envision Crowe with a bit of a mullet (think Ewan's mullet cut from "Attack of the Clones") with shades of light grey as well as a grey beard. And he's wearing the Kryptonian uniform. That's an incredible image.
Now imagine a scene where Crowe as Jor-El is sentencing Michael Shannon as Zod to exile inside the Phantom Zone. Epic is the word!

Are you not entertained?

I am with this news. So you have Crowe playing Kal-el's real dad, and Costner playing his adopted dad. I wonder if they will swap Robin Hood stories on the set.

Solid choice, though it's interesting two notably difficult actors will now have played this role...

Kind think he's a jerk as a person, but he's a damn fine actor. This could work.

I've heard from many that he's a great guy but he's just got a wicked temper if you cross him.

Let's hope they leave out Luthor! These Superman movie HAVE to stop being all the same movie, cause that's pretty much what they are. This one so far feeling a lot like a remake of Superman 2.

Keeping with recent news, it looks like baby Kal-El's gonna be sent to Earth with a...uh..."turtleneck," if you catch my drift.

Didn't see that coming

Another big name for the movie! And while I am not the biggest fan of Crowe, there is no denial that he's a more than capable actor...I like this choice!

Zack Snyder never casts the obvious choices, but he always puts together a great cast.
