Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield are confirmed for the sequel to The Amazing Spider-man

Sep. 28, 2012by: Alex Maidy

Despite rumors to the contrary, Marc Webb will once again helm the adventures of Peter Parker for the sequel to this year's THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

Sony revealed that Webb and Andrew Garfield are officially returning as director and star for the currently untitled sequel, which will begin production in early 2013 for its scheduled May 2, 2014 release date. The film will be produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach with a screenplay from Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Jeff Pinkner. Those screenwriters updated a draft by James Vanderbilt, who wrote THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

The sequel will once again be in 3D (apparently people will still care about 3D in two years). Emma Stone is still not confirmed to return as Gwen Stacy, but I am sure that is just a formality. Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield were the best part of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. Their interaction as Gwen and Peter gave the movie one of its biggest highlights.

Columbia Pictures President Doug Belgrad had this to say regarding the announcement: “We could not be more confident in the direction we are taking this new Spider-Man storyline and we are tremendously excited to be ramping up production again with Marc at the helm and Andrew continuing on as Peter Parker. We can’t wait to share what we have in store for Peter and Spider-Man with audiences worldwide.”

Here is to hoping that since the rebooted origin is out of the way that the sequel can put more focus on Spider-man being a hero. But, if they plan on keeping the film rooted in a more realistic universe, which villain would be best suited to go against the webslinger?

Extra Tidbit: My vote is for Kraven the Hunter. Make Spider-man survive the most dangerous game!

Yay on Garfield, nay on Webb

I was no fan of Amazing Spider-Man, but I hope everyone learns from its mistakes and deliver a decent sequel.

But Webb just zapped any energy and fun from the movie. It was dull, inert, poorly-written and I actually couldn't wait for it to end, and Spidey's my favorite superhero! Haven't been that bummed since Terminator Salvation. Hopefully they have a better script and don't make it so damn lifeless.

@Gern...

Wow I actually felt the exact opposite. It had terrific acting from all involved, great writing, a little darker and much more realistically played out than the original trilogy which was just more "comic goofy". Plus they finally gave us a kick-ass girl for Spider-Man to rescue who could take care of herself and had a brain. Even the goddamn bully of the movie was three-dimensional.

The script was the worst thing about this movie, the characters were boring and they totally got Peter wrong. He wasn't smart or funny he was just a dumb emo punk with a bad attitude.

In fact...Flash saying he was sorry about Peter's uncle. That made me cry. It was soooo unexpected and I wasn't ready to handle that.

Hm I wonder...

So after this is a trilogy, I wonder what direction they're going to take the origin next? Still think this is a Cash-Grab to involve Spider-Man with the Avengers. Spider-Man 3 aside, I really miss Toby and Raimi. Recasting the entire film was really dumb to me sorry.

Emma Stone!

Great news. Now hopefully they won't spend an entire marketing campaign upping the hype on one story, completely edit that out at the last second, and save it for a sequel. To me, that was the one flaw in the movie. But lets get the official announcement that the always lovely Emma Stone is back as Gwen Stacy (probably the best casting in this movie, a million times better than Dunst), lets get a full, complete story this time, and lets watch the sequel rake in the money it deserves. And by the way, not sure how a giant lizard is "rooted in a more realistic universe." If they can (sorta, kinda) pull that off, I dont think many other villains are off the table for the sequel

Cool, now the sequel can be just as pointless and unfun as the first one. Everyone talks about Dark Knight Rises, and Avengers saying they are the best superhero movies ever etc (not saying i agree, just acknowledging the hype) then some people hate on Ghost Rider 2 etc, but no one mentions amazing spiderman - its just so bland. Its not causing any reaction or emotion. Thats when you know it was a movie made to retain the rights to the name for other examples see the upcoming Robocop.

With Webb on board again, this makes it a dvd rental for me. The first wasn't worth seeing it in the theater (and I saw it free at a sneak preview in IMAX3D), and I'm pretty sure the second will follow suit.

Glad they got Webb back

Went into Amazing Spider-Man with relatively low expectations and was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the movie, 2nd best comic book movie of the year IMO, Garfield was great and I really liked that they had him making wisecracks in this one.

My choice for villain would be Scorpion, I know he's not one that fans are dying to see but it would be a cool way to introduce Jameason/Daily Bugle, have him hate Spider-Man so much that he try's to make a better superhero and it goes wrong.

Though I kind of expect them to introduce Mary Jane instead make it a love triangle and use Green Goblin for the next vilian since they hinted at that in the first one.

Was not my favorite movie ever, but I'm confident the sequel will be far superior now that the origin is out of the way.

I love Spider-Man and I loved the first one as a kid, didn't care for the over the top cheesiness and crappy romance that ruined the last two movies for me (well the third was ruined from the get go) so I appreciate the new direction.

I prefer Raimi's films, but the Amazing Spiderman was good enough for me to enjoy. The repeat of the origin story was kinda boring, but with that out of the way this movie could be better. As for Villains, I think Electro would be an intersting choice.

Webb and Garfield are back. Columbia's Doug Belgrad proclaims, "We could not be more confident in the direction we are taking this new Spider-Man storyline." Well, okay. The new approach has its fans. Just examine this article's discussion thread. However, some of us gave The Amazing Spider-Man a chance this summer, and we were very disappointed in the new approach. Webb's Spidey violated the origin mythos in unacceptable ways (to us, the group about which I write). The movie was too juvenile

Webb's Spidey violated the origin mythos in unacceptable ways (to us, the group about which I write). The movie was too juvenile for our adult tastes. And, please note, Sony and everyone, that the Spider-Man character does have adult fans. By contrast, the Raimi movies had appeal to multiple age groups from kids to young people to adults.
I will not be catching Webb of Spider-Man at the theatre nor on DVD. Sony has lost a potential enthusiastic consumer. More importantly, if you feel as I do, please boycott the next Spider-Man movie. Sony will change direction more quickly if potential viewers vote with their dollars. If you do not feel as I do, enjoy the next show and anticipate it over the next two years. Adult comic fans are a bit old to be into Spider-Man anyway.

Meh. I think it pretty much speaks volumes that Amazing Spider-Man pretty much disappeared from public consciousness. Not to mention, when Batman Begins and Casino Royale came out, they pretty much shut up the naysayers against a reboot. This movie is still polarizing people. Well, the few people who actually remember they saw it.

Also I hope they don't botch Gwen Stacy's death as badly as they did Uncle Ben's. Of course, her death would be way sadder if they actually wrote Emma Stone a part

Also I hope they don't botch Gwen Stacy's death as badly as they did Uncle Ben's. Of course, her death would be way sadder if they actually wrote Emma Stone a part to play and gave her a personality instead of making her a plot contrivance. Seriously, Ben's death was the worst. He got himself killed by grabbing a gun being held by a guy who had no intention to harm him. So so dumb!

You could actually cut out his death and not even effect the plot. His death is what motivates Spider-Man to do the right thing, but here they washed all guilt away from Spider-Man. Actually, he wasn't really the amazing Spider-Man in this, he was Coldplay-listening Hipster-haired Skater Douche.

Sorry for the rant, but there's a reason why this movie divided people right down the middle. Ugh, just remembered Spidey telling Gwen that the "best promises are broken ones" or whatever. Way to leave your girlfriend to grieve for her father alone AND defy a dying man's wish! Seriously, Spidey was a grade-A asshole in this.

Alright. I'm done. Sorry about that guys. This movie just really, really pissed me off.

In terms of action, The Amazing Spider-Man was alright. However, in terms of Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, I don't see the chemistry between Mr. Garfield and Ms. Stone at all.

Garfield is a great Parker, nice to see that most people appreciate that. I'm not sure about Webb, his film had flaws, but were they his or the studio's? Still I liked it more than Raimi's version. The action felt real and dangerous, but there wasn't enough of it. As for a new villain, is it too soon to ask for a real Green Goblin? Could we have Dafoe back and dress him in green goblin skin with bulging yellow eyes?

Couldn't have given less of a fuck...

and now ASM was in danger of leaving theaters without me seeing it....which was really weird, because only a few years ago my friends and I used to dream about a Spidey movie, so to not be excited or see it opening weekend was bad. I was wrong. It was great, and now I am psyched for part 2.
Extra Tidbit- who was in the jail cell? Osborne? How did he disappear? Chameleon? Mysterio?
Cast this suggestion- Norman Osborne.

Glad to hear this news over something about them leaving the project and Sony getting another reboot in place. As for the baddie, I'm hoping for a redemption of Venom, hopefully soon, or Mysterio messing with Spiderman's fucking mind.

First one was garbage, but I will stay neutral for now

I will give the second one a chance because it wont be the boring origin story again. They need a good villain this time though. They also need to make Peter smarter, funnier and just throw out the emo awkward kid they created in the first one.

That's a relief

I was almost certian Webb would come back but some of the rumors had me a little paranoid he wouldn't which would have been a huge mistake by the studio because he gave us what is now the definitive Spiderman, yep, i said it, this is the version that brings him to life for real . Even with the inherently fantastical premise he somehow made everything feel natural and believable, i never got that with Raimi's versions, although i still immensely enjoy those incarnations Webb's vision is the

Freak the people that didn't like it, some people are never happy, i can't wait to see the next one.

Just relieved that Webb and Garfield will be a team for a trilogy now.
