Marc Webb IS the new Spider-Man director!

01.19.2010

He's been the buzzed favorite almost since the perplexing news of a SPIDER-MAN reboot first came out, and now it's quite official.

Director Marc Webb ((500) DAYS OF SUMMER) is the new creative vision behind Sony and Marvel's "re-imagining" of the classic comic character.

The synergistically named director recently showed that romantic comedies don't have to suck (even though they nearly all do anyway), and will now be plunking Peter Parker and his swinging alter-ego back into high school.

I'll let you read the whole press release for yourself:

Marc Webb, the director of the Golden Globe-nominated Best Picture (500) Days of Summer, will direct the next chapter in the Spider-Man franchise, set to hit theaters summer 2012, it was jointly announced today by Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.

Written by James Vanderbilt, Webb will work closely with producers Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin in developing the project, which will begin production later this year.

Commenting on the announcement, Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, said, "At its core, Spider-Man is a small, intimate human story about an everyday teenager that takes place in an epic super-human world. The key for us as we sought a new director was to identify filmmakers who could give sharp focus to Peter Parker's life. We wanted someone who could capture the awe of being in Peter's shoes so the audience could experience his sense of discovery while giving real heart to the emotion, anxiety, and recklessness of that age and coupling all of that with the adrenaline of Spider-Man's adventure. We believe Marc Webb is the perfect choice to bring us on that journey."

Arad and Ziskin added jointly, "Over the years, the Spider-Man comics have been told with bold and creative new writers and artists who have re-calibrated the way audiences see Peter Parker. Marc Webb will do for the new direction of the films what so many visionary storytellers have done with the comic books. He is an incredibly talented filmmaker and we look forward to working closely with him on this new adventure."

Webb said, "This is a dream come true and I couldn't be more aware of the challenge, responsibility, or opportunity. Sam Raimi's virtuoso rendering of Spider-Man is a humbling precedent to follow and build upon. The first three films are beloved for good reason. But I think the Spider-Man mythology transcends not only generations but directors as well. I am signing on not to 'take over' from Sam. That would be impossible. Not to mention arrogant. I'm here because there's an opportunity for ideas, stories, and histories that will add a new dimension, canvas, and creative voice to Spider-Man."

Stan Lee, co-creator of Spider-Man, added, "I'm excited that Sony has chosen a director with a real penchant and understanding for the character. This is a brave, bold direction for the franchise, and I can't wait to see what Marc comes up with next."

Added Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, "The idea of re-imagining the on-screen story for one of the world's most iconic superheros is sure to deliver an exciting new dimension to Spider-Man fans everywhere. There are volumes of comics and material available to inspire fresh and compelling takes on Peter Parker and his journey as Spidey and we look forward to seeing this come alive onscreen."

Marc Webb has won acclaim with his film debut (500) Days of Summer. He has several MTV VMAs™ including 2009's Best Director award for Green Day's "21 Guns," 2006 Best Rock Video for AFI's "Miss Murder," and Best Group Video for The All-American Rejects' "Move Along." The Music Video Production Association honored him in 2006 as the Director of the Year for his work with Weezer, AAR, and My Chemical Romance.

In addition to two Golden Globe nominations including Best Picture (musical or comedy), his first feature film, (500) Days of Summer, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, has been nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Feature. Webb was also awarded the Spotlight Award, which honors outstanding directorial debuts, by the National Board of Review.

Extra Tidbit: And what about the 3-D? It's a safe bet.

will bruce campbell be back?

I haven't seen 500 days yet, and I agree that not all great action directors started off with action. Why the re-boot though? I guess it's better to start a new director from the beginning.

I'll tell you all right now that Marc Webb is one bad ass director and I'm pumped about this. Not about Spiderman, about Marc Webb directing it. He can do NO HARM to this, as it's already been fucked by studios, only good. Remember that people.

Why are you people so threathened by Change?

I agree with some comments below. Sure Spiderman PART ONE had a great launch. But are you really anticipating the next MJ/Peter/Ross and Rachel/a hideous Princess Peach has been kidnapped crapfest?

I wholeheartedly agree that rebooting in the same DECADE is grounds for a possibly epic fail. But, hey... if it fails nobody will force you to watch it. And if it flies you can always pretend you never said anything bad about it... I bet half the people here dissed AVATAR before it inspired

People have to start somewhere

You guys do realize that not all action directors started off as action directors right? Just because he hasn't made an action film before doesn't mean it's gonna suck. Christopher Nolan never directed an action flick before Batman Begins and looks where that took him. James Cameron directed Pirahna II before The Terminator and look where that took him. Lucas with American Graffiti before Star Wars, Tarantino with Pulp Fiction before Kill Bill, and Favreau with Elf before Iron Man.

Most action directors started off not making action films and they turned out great. Just because Webb hasn't made an action flick before doesn't mean it's gonna automatically suck. Stop bitching and give the guy a chance.

All the directors you've listed have more than proved themselves long before they created these great franchises.

Nolan directed Following & Momento before Batman. Both of those films were very much in the same genre as Batman, so Nolan proved himself as a powerhouse director for that genre. Even still, in Batman Begins, the action was pretty mediocre.

Cameron didn't direct Piranha II. But before that he direct a very solid, well shot sci-fi short film. Then he worked in visual effects long

Cameron didn't direct Piranha II. But before that he direct a very solid, well shot sci-fi short film. Then he worked in visual effects long before the Piranha II bullshit. And still, Cameron had to prove himself with The Terminator (which was a small independent film) before he was handed the keys to a major franchise with Aliens.

Lucas directed a small but visually impressive sci-fi opus before Star Wars called THX1138. And Star Wars was his original invention, he was just handed the franchise, he created it from the ground up.

Webb hasn't proven shit. He was handed this because he name is hot right now, not because he has any skill when it comes to pure cinema & true visual storytelling.

As much as I like Sam Raimi, it is about time he moves on something else. He doesn't seem as confortable as when he does "smaller films" anyway. Now this idea of reboot back in college times is such an awful idea.... I am fed up with the mary jane love story crap splot they seem to keep bringing back each time... Its time for real action like in the comics with a more adult peter parker and bring back Venom and introduce Carnage!!!!!!!

Just simply too soon...

All other arguments pro/con aside, it is just far too soon to return to the origin story. I'm sorry to Mr. Webb, but I feel this will fail for no other reason than timing.

There needs to be a Hollywood moratorium on remakes, reboots and prequels.

Seriously, Hollywood. You need to stop going back to the beginning of stories, you need to stop returning to the past just because it's more comfortable and safe for you. Grow some balls and take your stories *forward* instead of dwelling on the past. We don't need to see another Spidey origin story, we don't need to see how Hannibal Lecter became a cannibal, we don't need to see the Enterprise crew's first adventure

Though I wish they would've waited a few more years before rebooting, I'm still open to this. All we can do is wait and see. I mean, you could do worse in terms of director choices. Way worse.

OK

No more dancing, crying and screaming like girls. Straight up fun adventure film. I really liked KD as MJ but in the sequels, she not only looked horrible but was annoying. Not sure about the reboot plan but I guess it's an interesting concept. Riami was trying to make Spidy into a victim than a hero. After a while one tends to get bored with all the whining.

I agree. The whining became more and more consistent as the series went on. Marvel has always had a history of its heroes acting like victims but I'd love to see Spidey act like someone enjoying his powers for once.

This is really good news. Mark Webb is a fine director and I think he'll capture the essence of the teenage life very well. Good for him. Now all that's left is to find out who will play Peter Parker.

Origin story again?!

Origin stories suck meatballs. The ONLY way this would work is if it opens with a wide angle on Manhattan...Spidey swings into view, right behind him is the vicious Venom. They both do battle. Fight fight fight. Epicness. Venom retreats into some hideout. Spidey's more concerned about Lizard. Makes it feel more original. Venom exists but Spidey's main priority now is another villain. Then at the end they tease a Venom return; bigger and badder in the sequel.

How's that NOT going to work,

NOT GOOD AT ALL

Maybe he turns out to be one of the best directors of all time, but at the moment this does not sound good at all. Offcourse there has to be a believable parker story but the spiderman part has to be big too. And there are so many ways to go, the worst idea of all is to go back to highschool again, really hate this.

Glad we have new blood on the Spidey films, though I am quite uncertain about Marc Webb. He may get the performances right but will he get the spectacle? Not just any director can do epic action. That's why there's only a handful of Camerons and Spielbergs etc. Also don't want another origin story. If it is then I'll choose to watch something I haven't already seen at the cinema and wait for this to come to DVD.

Could be...

Could be good, could be shit. I don't think any of the previous 3 nailed it, but part 2 came closest. That said, I don't mind re-approaching the material, and Marc Webb might be the man for the job, but if anyone makes this iffy its the studio, and Avi Arad. He sucks.

This will be garbage. Noone should be rebooting Spider-Man unless they happen to be Marvel Studios. On top of that, this feels so rushed. Sony needs a cash cow, so the business machine is churning, and that is rarely a good thing - creatively. And after this reboot fails, Marvel Studios won't be able to reboot it themselves because it has already been done. It's like with The Punisher. Who wants to make a Punisher film, when they tried rebooting it twice already?

GAY!

"TAKE OVER" "NEXT CHAPTER"?? Are they rebooting or continuing the films? kind of contradictory when they say Peter will be back in high school...they need to get their story straight, anyways this has shit written all over it, what a waste!

What's up with Marvel and hiring music video directors to helm their films? we all saw what happened when Brett Ratner took over the X-MEN films! way to ruin the couple of superhero franchise's that haven't actually sucked untill now.

People seem to be forgetting that what makes Spidey so great and relatable is his life as a regular teen/adult. without a good "human" story, you've got just another superhero movie.

to the haters posting

he's a good director. i'm more for the human side than super-hero side. 500 days was the tits. JGL is great but i hope he's not spiderman. Story was always a horrible director, Webb isn't.

I have a feeling we'll see more of Peter Parker than Spider-Man, and I don't like the sound of that.

Webb for SPiderman seems too much like Story for Fantastic Four. Hes a director who gets one aspect of the character but not the action aspect. I'll keep my hopes up for now I suppose.

And whoever said that they don't like the idea of a "high school Spider-man" needs to get their heads checked and read the Essential Spider-man stories by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. THAT'S REAL SPIDER-MAN

I like this. and I liked (500) Days of Summer. And I like Ultimate Spider-man for the most part. How DARE you speak ill of Stan Lee. At least now we'll get mechanical web shooters, a hot Mary Jane, and no SANDMAN KILLING UNCLE BEN

Marc Webb, the director of the wildly overrated (500) DAYS OF SUMMER, is going to helm the SPIDER-MAN reboot? Are you fucking kidding me, Sony?! This is a huge step down from Sam Raimi. I don't even want to imagine what a Webb-directed SPIDER-MAN flick is going to look like. I can't wait to see Peter Parker, after falling in love with Mary Jane, dance in the streets like an idiot with bluebirds flying, a Han Solo reflection, and a Hall & Oates song playing in the background.

Fucking

Fucking hell...this series is finished. This news sickens me. Absolutely sickens me. I'd rather Sony just axe this franchise instead of continuing on without Raimi and his crew. So much for hoping Sony would take the series in a direction a la Christopher Nolan's Batman films. I don't envision this reboot working in the slightest. This is not a step in the right direction; it is a step backwards.

Betting

I wouldn't doubt it if this movie goes 3-D too. Still can't believe they Rebooting a good thing. When are they gonna reboot Star Wars? It's pathetic

I'm still in shock. This still seems surreal to me. What a terrible idea to reboot spider man.

And as for the Stan Lee quote, man you can just practically feel like the guy is cashing in a check everytime he opens his mouth.

FUCK THIS! 500 Days of Summer was one of the worst movies of 2009. Ugh. Any hope for this reboot just went down the drain.

This is all entirely Twilight's fault. Everyone realizes that, right? Well, you will when this comes out in 2012 and Spider-Man sparkles.

Ultimate Spiderman?

This is starting to smell a lot like some kind of Ultimate Spider-man like thing... and I hate ultimate spider-man... but other than that webb is a great director I'm psyched to see where he takes things... as long as it's not towards ultimate spider-man

Very good first step..

into the right direction. This guy is awesome and "(500) Days of Summer" was an amazing movie and has become one of my favorite movies of all time. I really hope he casts Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Peter Parker/Spider Man. The guy is an underrated, amazing actor and would be phenomenal for a franchise like this. If this does happen my ticket is already bought and I will have my ass in the theater on opening night.

is some of the truest and most entertaining stories of the character. I loved 500 Days of Summer and I'm very excited about this. Hope the casting is good! I still don't understand how their re-imaging with the spider-man 4 script????

So with this guy directing, what are the odds he'll bring on Joseph Gordon-Levitt?

I can't back a guy whose only film credit is a [link] And I sure as hell don't support a high school Spiderman. I think back to 80s high school flicks every time I hear about it

This is a step in the right direction. I think getting the right cast is the biggest issue. Still wish this wasn't taking place in high school. Now with X-men first class and this, it must be great for the high-school audience. The rest of us, not so much.

Now all we need is new Mary Jane. That's all I'm asking.

If you're Sony or Marvel, you obviously want a new Spider-Man film every 2-3 years until they are no longer profitable.

We should really outlaw the word reboot though.

I may eat these words later, but I kind of like the idea of re-imagining the character and the universe every decade or so when a new filmmaker comes on. Like the analogy they make with the switching of writers and artists in the comic world.
