Marc Webb's Spider-Man to get a new J. Jonah Jameson

10.27.2010

Since Marc Webb's SPIDER-MAN is completely separating itself from Sam Raimi's prior installments it makes sense that he would recast the actors.

So it shouldn't be much of a surprise that Peter Parker's rage filed boss at the Daily Bugle, J. Jonah Jameson would get a new face. J.K. Simmons perfectly embodied everything that was Jameson in Raimi's Spidey series. Hollywood Insider (via /Film) says that the role of Jameson has become one of the hardest to cast.

The site notes that a lot of actors are anxious to take on the role, amongst them John Slattery (MAD MEN) and somehow Sam Elliot's name is being thrown around. Sam Elliot? Wildcard! I love the guy and his tremendous mustache, but I don't see them casting him in this role.

No other names were given other than the site's own suggestion of AVATAR's Stephen Lang.

Any suggestions for a new Jameson?

If you want the same result with a different face then I say cast Richard Jenkins.

I agree with my fellow Schmoes in that J.K. Simmons was indeed THE PERFECT embodiment of Triple-J that we've seen and ever will see in any Spider-man flick (whether it be animated or live action). But I do understand why they want to distance themselves from Sam Raimi's wimpy Toby Maguire Web Slinger. But as an earlier post by a fellow Schmoe points out, many actors have reprised their roles in a series regardless of who's stepping into the main character's shoes. So I believe it would be a

So I believe it would be a wise choice (and a crow pleasing one, at that) to at least re-cast J.K. as Jameson. But we'll see. Once upon a time no one believed that Heath Ledger would make a good Joker. He went on to win our hearts and an Oscar for that portrayal. R.I.P. Mr Ledger.

I would go with Kurtwood Smith from That 70's Show. How awesome would it be to hear him call Peter Parker a "DUMBASS!!"

Simmons was probably one of the only correct casting choices from Raimi's terrible films, and I'd certainly look to bring him back myself, many of us will only ever see him as Schillinger.

Let's also not forget that Desmond Llewelyn played 'Q' in all the Bond flicks despite there being different Bond's, Michael Gough played Alfred and Pat Hingle played Gordon in the early Batman flicks even when there was a different Batman. There's no reason they shouldn't allow J.K. Simmons to come back.

Yeah, I liked Simmons too but I'm hoping that the whole new cast will also equal a whole new tone to the franchise. And I love me some Sam Elliot. He doesn't seem like a perfect match up front, but he could make it his own for sure!

That's a good point, but you can have recurring characters played by the same actor AND establish a new tone. Look at the early Batman flicks, there's a totally different tone between Burton's and Schumacher's, yet the same actors played Alfred and Gordon in all of them.

You know, I'd be in favor of Sam Elliott, because even if he's completely wrong for it, he wouldn't be boring, and it would give us a clear signal for how this revamp is going.

Lang makes sense, but because I secretly want this thing to crash and burn, I vote no.

Actually, I know Mr. Fancy Pants was kidding, but Gibson could really make it his own.

Can't they just pretend that the 3rd film didn't exist. Then bring back Sam to do a new 3rd one. We will consider it the Halloween 3 of the Halloween franchise.

There's no doubt that J.K. Simmons is a spot on J. Jonah Jameson, but he's too talented and funny to be limited to the 10 minutes of comic relief screen time that J. Jonah Jameson gets. I want to see J.K. Simmons in a leading role!

Simmons should have been the Q of the Spiderman series. Even if the lead changes, he stays the same. I understand the logic of recasting, but like the reboot you can't force me to be happy with the idea.

I'd go so far as to say that J.K. Simmons was the best element in all three of Raimi's films. John Slattery is so great on MAD MEN, not sure he's the first person I'd pick for Jameson though. I'm loving the R. Lee Ermy suggestions.

John Slattery would be perfect for this role. JK did a great job with the role, but it would have been too weird to have him in the reboot. I still think the reboot is a bad idea, but with the cast coming together along nicely, this reboot might not be good, but definitely entertaining.

J.K. Simmons was perfect...

I do like the idea of John Slattery, but JK Simmons is the most perfect bit of casting in comic book movie history. No other hero/villain/side character has lived up to his comic book namesake quite the way Jameson did in Raimi's SPIDER-MAN, in my not-so-humble opinion.

J.K. Simmons was so perfect for the role

I wasn't a fan of Spider-Man 3, but I still think this reboot is a bad idea. Spider-Man 4 probably would have been really solid if the studio hadn't interfered so much.

The problem with recasting Simmons is that he was *so* perfect for the character. When the first movie came out he was a relatively unknown actor, and I remember thinking he was exactly like the character in the cartoon series (I never read the comics). Even my dad, not a comic book reader or action movie fan, said that he
