Margot Robbie in talks for Rupert Sanders' live-action Ghost in the Shell

09.04.2014

Yes, even though there hasn't been any news on the planned live-action version of GHOST IN THE SHELL since Rupert Sanders (SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN) joined the project in January, it's still happening, and The Wrap has learned Margot Robbie (THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, David Yates' TARZAN) is in talks to star in the film.

No word on what role Robbie might be up for, however some believe she's being considered for Motoko Kusanagi, the cyborg heroine from the anime and manga series. Avi Arad and Steven Paul are producing the movie, and the script is by THE HOAX and THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST scribe William Wheeler.

I'm not a huge anime guy and although I'm also not that familiar with GHOST IN THE SHELL, I have a feeling a lot of fans aren't going to be happy if Margot Robbie does end up playing the character in the film. I just think many would rather see the role go to a Japanese actress, like PACIFIC RIM's Rinko Kikuchi for example.

Maybe I'm wrong though. What are your thoughts on Margot Robbie possibly playing Motoko Kusanagi in Rupert Sanders' GHOST IN THE SHELL?

Ghost in the Shell, Dead in the Water. Are audiences really that unwilling to go see a movie if Asian actors are playing Asian characters?

If you kinda think about it, there really isn't many good Asian roles, let alone actors in Hollywood. Maybe a handful? But even then, they're not prominent enough to warrant a lead role. Maybe supporting role or a villian/henchman role. Kinda sad in a way.

It is sad and there's lots of room for improvement in this department. I'm glad Lee Byung Hun is getting noticed and Rinko Kikuchi's prominent role in Pacific Rim was great, but here, in a live-action adaptation of an anime, there's no reason not to at least try to get Asian actors. An adaptation of a story that comes from Asia would be an excellent way to create more Asian roles. Also, it would be great if a series like Martial Law would pop up again someday.

So a white model is playing an Asian ass kicker...

This is bullshit, why do they even bother? This has Dead or Alive written all over it. They are taking a tough as nails, badass cyborg cop and turning her into a shitty prom queen.

Okay...but

If she were to play Kusanagi, wouldn't the name have to be changed as well? I loved Ghost in the Shell, but as with Akira, I just don't see a live action movie happening, let alone being good.

Rinko Kikuchi would be great for the title role. However, Akira remake fell apart. I doubt Ghost in the Shell would get off the ground.

Her?! Yeah, maybe if she could actually act. Watching her trying to act is just excruciating.

Her acting ability sure needs improvement but she's a looker.
