Margot Robbie says she’s working on a Harley Quinn spinoff

SUICIDE SQUAD featured a pretty large ensemble cast that included one of the biggest movie stars ever (Will Smith) and an Oscar-winner (Jared Leto), but everyone left the theaters in love with one actress and her character: Harley Quinn played by Margot Robbie. She's easily the fan favorite and we’re all eager to see her all back on-screen, and we can rest assured that Robbie is doing everything she can to give us what we want, even if it's without her other Squad members.

While talking with MTV recently to promote her new movie I, TONYA, Robbie was asked about the future of Harley Quinn, and though there are rumblings of a HARLEY/QUINN movie and a GOTHAM CITY SIRENS flick, she said she is working on a seperate spinoff that “totally different” from those movies:

Yeah, I've been working on it for two years now. I mean, it's hard to kind of talk about it, because all the stuff is kind of under lock and key. But I've been working on a separate spinoff Harley thing for a while now.

WONDER WOMAN may have been the hit Warner Bros. needed, there still seems to be an uncertainty as to where future DC movies are at in terms of production, and if they will even happen at all. Robbie isn’t even quite sure what’s all happening, but she knows Quinn is still a priority:

There's a lot going on right now. And I'm not sure…Honestly, I don't think anyone knows what's the next thing that's going to happen. But I think everyone's keen to get Harley back on screen, so everyone's working on lots of different versions of what that could be.

No matter what Robbie is keen on one way to take Quinn, and though the state of GOTHAM CITY SIRENS is up in the air she still wants a movie that gets all the female characters together:

I want to see her with other women. I kept saying when we were shooting SUICIDE SQUAD, I was like “She needs her girlfriends.” She needs other girls around her because she loves that. You see that in the comics, she loves meeting people, any people. But she needs a little girl gang.

Perhaps the movie Robbie is working on is the "Harley Quinn/Bird of Prey" movie that was reported to be in development a few weeks ago with BUMBLEBEE writer Christina Hodson working on the script. There’s also the Harley Quinn animated series, but when it was announced Robbie was not attached to the voice. Whatever it is she’s referring to it sounds like it won’t have anything to do with her tattooed “Mista J.”

Look, I know a lot of people liked SS, but I don’t think anyone walked away loving the dude with the skin condition, the soldier dude, or the guy who mastered all the ways to tie a knot on the Boy Scouts. Harley Quinn is the favorite, and whatever project Robbie is talking about is just another sign WB is all about whimsical crime-lover and is looking to give the fans what they want. Robbie seems committed as hell to play the character again, and hopefully, she does for a long time, because she's knocking it out of the park with that big ol' mallet of hers.

Gavin O'Connor is set to direct SUICIDE SQUAD 2, which could hit theaters in 2019.
