Mark Millar confirms Kick Ass 2 will shoot this summer plus more projects on the way

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Writer Mark Millar confirmed to the Daily Record that a slew of comic-to-film projects from his Millarworld/ICON imprint will be going before the lens in the coming year. “We shoot KICK ASS 2 and AMERICAN JESUS this summer. Then Matthew (Vaughn) and I have Secret Service, which is a neddy James Bond,” Mark said. (note: “neddy” is like nerdy for those who aren’t familiar with Scottish slang). “We came up with this idea of a wee ned who becomes a gentleman spy, ditching his trainers for his Savile Row suits and being taught how to speak properly.”

Millar, the creator of both KICK ASS and WANTED has been on a roll both in his comic and film careers. Millar discussed his rise to fame at Marvel, saying:

“A decade ago, Marvel were going bankrupt and asked me to reboot characters people weren’t interested in anymore, like Captain America, Thor and Iron Man. You couldn’t give the stuff away. The company was in the toilet. Because they had nothing to lose, I was given a free hand. Avengers caught on big and that led to the Marvel movies like Iron Man, building up to the Avengers movie based on what I did for them 10 years ago. That book changed my life and gave me the chance to go off and do Millarworld.”

Currently, Millar has a number of projects being developed simultaneously along with the monthly comics hitting the shelves. It’s a bold move, considering that the majority of comics-to-film adaptations that are being greenlit are based on characters that have been around for decades. For Millar, some of his series’ and characters haven’t even hit the comic rack yet.

Elaborating more on SECRET SERVICE, Millar says:

“I am a massive Bond fan and Secret Service is like My Fair Lady meets James Bond. I am halfway through the comic and Matthew (Vaughn) and I are halfway through the script. There is a good role for a 50-something actor to play an older gentleman spy training this young kid. There are not a lot of tough actors in that age group but you would never believe Colin Firth or Hugh Grant in a fight scene. We are bouncing names around.”

There’s no denying that Millar has become a powerhouse in the last few years. His comic-to-film adaptations have been successful and the desire for his writing and creative talent on a number of Hollywood properties is in high demand. However, Millar has lined up a massive amount of projects, which feels almost like too much, too soon, too fast.  Along with everything already mentioned, Millar also has the projects SUPERIOR, NEMESIS, JUPITER’S CHILDREN, a sequel to WANTED, and SUPERCROOKS all being lined up as both comics and films.

Seriously, when does this guy sleep?
