Mark Millar envisions 5-10 more film franchises from Fox's Marvel properties

07.29.2013

Forget those crossover dreams between Disney and Fox; Mark Millar has plans for the X-MEN and related characters that should set up the studio for the long haul. With THE WOLVERINE doing well globally, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST poised to clean up at the box office, and an X-FORCE movie on the horizon, Fox doesn't appear to need the crutch of capitalizing on the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, Millar sees big potential for their own movie continuity.

In an interview with Collider, Millar explained there are no plans to make any AVENGERS-like films to bring together disparate superheroes any time soon:

“We're not talking crossovers or anything just yet; the idea is to build it quietly in its own way and bring in the best possible talent but you're right - Marvel sold the X-Men franchises back in the '90s when they needed the cash but you have to remember they were the crown jewels...

The reason they got snapped up is that they were Marvel's best-selling book really for 20 years. So we're sitting on gold right now. Very vaguely, we are talking about lots of possibilities but I think there's a good five to ten golden franchises in there.”

When the original X-MEN came out, that was the gold standard for Marvel comic titles. Now that Disney has found a way back to the limelight with their various series, Millar seems intent to revitalize the mutant characters. The possibilities are really huge. You could get any number of solo films for characters like Deadpool or Cable along with possible team films with Alpha Flight, X-Force, and more. There is also THE FANTASTIC FOUR on the horizon which could lead to a bunch of spin-off films as well.

5-10 is a big number, though. What heroes or teams do you envision that Fox could get to the big screen?

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST opens May 23, 2014.

speaking of crossovers...

now, i know at this point, currently, since the rights between the studios are split, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is, for now, seperate from Fox's Marvel properties, so its quite doubtful we'll be seeing an AVENGERS VS. X-MEN film or anything of the like, anytime in perceived future.... but, from what i just realized above, apparently Fox owns the rights to the Fantastic Four franchise and all related characters as well? Because, if that is so, then it isn't crazy to feasibly envision

Because, if that is so, then it isn't crazy to feasibly envision character (good & bad) &/or team crossovers between the X-Men & the Fantastic Four?!? which definitely broadens the possibilities there for Fox, in which i hadn't realized or noticed before.... that's pretty damn sweet! Even though, in the Marvel Comics Universe, there hasn't been much interaction between them, it'd still be pretty cool to play with the idea, and just considering that Fox thus basically has quite a substantial chunk of the MCU, and can evolve and establish their own Marvel Cinematic Universe to play with, which is what the article was basically getting at, but at a bigger scope than just mutants apparently... and as for Sony and their liscence over all characters and world of Spidey, they could just partner with Fox OR Marvel to have joint productions in the semi-far future, once Spidey's world is fully established and adapted.... really awesome and fun things to think about.... :P

Fox doesn't own the rights to more than half your choices. I would have imagined someone who knows about Forbush-Man would have known that!

I guess a lot of people would like Marvel to have all their comics properties back for their movies, but in some ways, if Fox can convince us that they're capable of not ballsing up a sufficient number of comicbook movies there is a plus side to them having these rights, that being that they can focus on developing each Marvel property they have the rights to in greater depth than Marvel/Disney realistically ever would on their own. Marvel are doing a decent job with their 4 or 5 movies per 'phase' system. Fox can focus on what they want in addition to that. It would be nice if they could find a way to work together, so that the different companies could produce films that felt like they belonged in the same universe, maybe allowing certain characters to cross over, retaining the actors, as long as it didn't scupper the controlling studio's plans. Still, that's unlikely to ever happen, but as it stands having two studios working on Marvel characters isn't the end of the world. Spider-Man would be better off back with Marvel than with Sony, in my opinion, but having Fox trying to focus on the Mutants (and Fantastic 4, though that might be better off back with Marvel too) could work out well if the upcoming films do the job.

The X-Men ask how he can have a brother they never told him about and he explains that the stress of being able to read minds was too much for his brother so he left home to be far away from other people. He couldn't detect him before because Cerebro's range was originally limited to North America. The X-Men battle Xavier's brother and xavier places him in a coma. The end credit scene has Mr. Sinister and X-Man raising Apocalypse from his tomb.

Personally I want just want to see Deadpool and Gambit get their own origin films/franchises (two fan favorites that were unfortunately not treated with enough respect in any of the films). And to finally see Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse on the big screen fighting the X-Men.

But all of this is good news. I am a die hard X-Men fan and would love to see the universe and franchise grow through different, various films and franchises.

Probably the X-Force movie will be a springboard for solo movies (Cable, Deadpool, Psylocke, Warpath?, Domino??, Shatterstar???). Somebody also came up with the idea that Xavier could have had a twin brother and it was him whose body he took over after he died. Maybe they will go back and tell the story of how he ended up in a coma. Maybe Xavier's twin brother will be the Shadow King and a recurring villain (along with Mister Sinister and Apocalypse) for the First Class franchise.

I'm sure one of these days, comic book movies are going to jump the shark - but until then, bring them on.
I for one want to see Age of Apocalypse, Cable and Deadpool, and New Mutants.

well...

if Sony taught us anything, they can just keep rebooting X-Men and they'll be fine (e.g. see Spider-Man).

Cable, Deadpool, Gladiator, Lilandra, Psylocke, Bishop, Gambit, Longshot, Domino, Magneto, X23, Arch Angel, Rogue, all these characters have had great solo comic runs. As for the teams, X-Foce, X-Fator, Excalibur, Alpha Flight, New Mutants, Si'Ar, Inhumans, Marauders, Savage Lands people,

Also, don't forget a solo silver surfer movie.

Well there's a lot they could do. They obviously can continue with two separate franchises with the present day X-Men and the First Class X-Men, although that might get tricky as to how one franchise may impact the other. But there's also X-Force and they could potentially do X-Factor. More solo films for Wolverine, introduce a Deadpool trilogy and a Cable trilogy. That's seven franchises right there. I'm not sure what else could be done, but they could potentially just break up the X-Men

I'm not sure what else could be done, but they could potentially just break up the X-Men into different teams to include more characters from the comics - i.e. Uncanny X-Men, Astonishing X-Men, etc. I think I could sit here all day and just come up with titles and solo films.

yeah, I see those 7 franchises too more or less. The only difference is that I see Cable as the lead of X-Force, instead of a solo franchise. Deadpool yes, for sure.

About the actual x-men having solo movies... Gambit is easily the one with most potential, since he has has solo series and a decent backstory, but not sure Fox will give him a movie, in any case he will join the main team. And Id be pretty fine with it, since he is a great addition to current x-men.

I think 5 series are

I think 5 series are enough. Mostly team movies with Deadpool getting his movies. But the rest will work better as teams.
