Mark Millar says Joe Carnahan's Nemesis will be one of the best movies of the decade

Oct. 4, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Prolific comic book writer Mark Millar is apparently "shell-shocked" after reading the latest draft of Joe and Matthew Carnahan's script for NEMESIS, an adaptation of Millar and artist Steve McNiven's comic series of the same name. The author took to his blog to praise the script, saying it's "one of the most relentless and powerful screenplays" he's ever read. For those not aware of who or what NEMESIS is, Millar reiterates in the blog, saying:

"Nemesis is about America's worst nightmare in the form of a costumed billionaire attacking a city and doing everything he can to tear it down. The high concept, it's been said, is if Batman was The Joker and that's quite a fun way of looking at it."

Millar went on to discuss the the "antagonist" in NEMESIS, who obviously plays a large role in the story:

The cop who goes up against him, the Blake Morrow character in the book, is going to be a movie icon after this picture. I don't know who's going to be playing him at this stage, but I know that after reading the script everyone is going to WANT to.

It's been rumored in the past that Morrow could potentially be played by THE GREY's Liam Neeson, but there's nothing set in stone as of yet. Millar may be a little biased here, as the material is based on his own work, but I think that the concept and the story have a lot of big-screen potential and it's sure to ruffle some feathers when it debuts. It's certainly not "safe" comic book material. Having read the comic and as a fan of all parties involved, from Millar and McNiven to the Carnahan bros. I think this could be really great. At one point the late Tony Scott was involved to some extent with NEMESIS and having Joe Carnahan pick up the reins is really the perfect choice. Millar certainly has faith, saying, "This is my new favourite movie and it's still a year or two away from anyone even seeing it."

I'm looking forward to seeing this develop. Carnahan has teased quite a few projects that didn't come to fruition, the latest of which was his DEATH WISH remake, so you have to tread lightly when getting your hopes up. He's currently working on STRETCH with Patrick Wilson, Chris Pine, and Ed Helms, which is slated for release on March 21, 2014. Hopefully, NEMESIS will be next in the queue.

Extra Tidbit: Fans of the comic: Who would you like to see in the lead roles? I'm all for Carnahan using his favorites: Patrick Wilson for Nemesis and Liam Neeson for Blake Morrow.

I agree with all the people saying Millar needs to get off his own nutz, but I disagree strongly with the people who were hating on Nemesis...
I LOVED IT!!!

The one story by him I'd REALLY like to see made into a film is 'Old Man Logan' (Although it will never happen)

Mark Millar sounds like the kind of person who throws surprise birthday parties for himself.

This could be a really awesome movie but only if the filmmakers are smart enough to completely change a lot of the book. Hopefully it will be another Kick-Ass with them improving on the source material to perfectly execute the concept. With Carnahan it could go either way but it definitely has a good deal of potential.

I'm an unabashed Millar whore!

I love Millar. He wrote the first two volumes of the Ultimates and sorry but if you don't think that's great comic writing you're out to lunch (putting it nicely). I loved Nemesis, Supercrooks, Superior, Kick-Ass, Hit girl, the Ultimates, enjoying Jupiter's legacy and the litany of his work. He's ballsy and does what he wants and I admire that. Looking forward to Nemesis particularly if they can pull off the scene of Air Force One crashing. And your casting suggestions in the extra tidbit are

I will see anything that Joe Carnahan films. He's easily filmed some of my favorite films of all time with Narc, The Grey, and Smokin' Aces being my favorites.

Smokin' Aces is such a fun action flick. The ending is the best part.

Only if it is drastically different from the source material because Nemesis is probably one of the worst comics I've ever read.

Millar seems to be his own biggest fan. His recent books are rarely anything more than paperthin characters in equally lame storylines and plots being an excuse for all sort of vulgarity and violence. And ripping off every kind of superhero book (in this case Batman) isnt that creativ or smart either.

This book was not good. It is not nearly as interesting or intelligent as Millar pretends it is, like most of "Millar-World." I really wish Joe Carnahan would do something more worthwhile

Talk the talk... NOW walk the walk!

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Mark Millar and all his work... But Mark Millar is also renowned for talking out his ass about projects. Granted "Kick-Ass 2" happened, but the number of reports of 'Mark Millar is saying...' with regards to the film actually happening are FAR many to count!

That being said though, being a big fan Millar's work, and loving Carnahan, whose efforts have afforded us some amazingly gritty and badass movies, as well... I'm VERY hopeful for this. I'm a cinematic

I'm a cinematic optimist, so the potential I see here with Millar's work all in the hands of a particularly great filmmaker in Carnahan is very great. -- I just hope this is an instance where Millar, with all due respect, isn't talking out his ass LOL!
