Mark Millar teases how many heroes will make up the cinematic X-Force

Jul. 25, 2013by: Alex Maidy

News broke last week that Fox may be developing an X-FORCE movie to follow X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST as a new franchise to run concurrent with X-MEN. We also learned that KICK-ASS 2 director Jeff Wadlow may be the man writing and maybe directing the new super-squad film. What we don't know is which heroes would make up the team.

Most iterations of X-FORCE have consisted of six or more rotating members, many of whom were minor characters that the average movie-goer would never recognize. It would seem more likely that Fox would merge some current X-MEN characters with some new blood being introduced in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST like Bishop. While this is all just speculation, Marvel consultant at Fox Mark Millar offered this regarding the project:

"People are going to be dissecting every name as it gets released, so it will be cool when you have your five."

The original Rob Liefeld team in 1989 consisted of Boom Boom, Cable, Cannonball, Domino, Feral, Shatterstar and Warpath. Of those names, Cable and Domino are the biggest likely to make it to a big screen version. The latest team featured in Uncanny X-Force was made up of Wolverine, Psylocke, Deadpool, Archangel, Fantomex, and E.V.A.

The most likely scenario would be to keep Deadpool, Psylocke, Archangel, and add in some combination of Cable, Bishop, and Wolverine. This would be an easier way to bring Deadpool to the big screen than the troubled standalone film. Plus, bringing Wolverine back to a squad outside of the X-MEN would allow those films to focus on the tons of other characters, like X-MEN: FIRST CLASS did successfully.

While Millar's comment is far from the final word, at least we know an average number for our dream casting.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST opens May 23, 2014 and THE WOLVERINE opens tomorrow.

Is anyone else just love this. When I was a kid, I never thought I would see any of these comic book movies made. I am just happy they are becoming movies. I will watch them as long as they keep making them.

Sadly this will be PG-13, with Deadpool and Cable being neutered to make money.

They could really go into any direction with this, so I'm hoping Jeff Wadlow has fun with the storyline. Perhaps having the team as Cable, Boom Boom, Deadpool, Nightcrawler, and Domino. One storyline that would be great is the mutant virus created by Apocalypse.

^ Coremax is right. The hand found her in the east China Sea where they then trained her to be a ninja assasin. Spiral transfered the mind of Betsy into the body of Kwannon (who is Japanese, and Japan is part of Asia). Why are we even having this conversation? Has she ever looked like Caucasian to you?

A British Ninja assasin who uses samurai swords and kitana's. That makes sense now.

They could easily use the relaunch of X-Force from a couple years back as a starting point.

Basically in order the to protect the mutant population, Cyclops creates a black ops kill squad led by Wolverine. (an ends justifies the means sort of deal)

That team initially started with

-Wolverine
-X23 (a female clone of Wolverine(
-Warpath
-Wolfsbane

They eventually added Deadpool, Archangel, Psylocke and Fantomex.

My guess is the team will start with Wolverine, Warpath, Deadpool

Including Archangel would require Apocalypse, which would be fantastic.

Domino: Throw a short black wig and a dalmatian spot on Kristen Bell and you're good to go.

I think having these X-Force films are a great idea. The mutant universe is huge and filled with many memorable characters that we have seen already (but not enough of), and mutants that we haven't seen before on the big screen.

I wouldn't mine having at least one big X-Men to have in these films so then the transission could be easier. But it's a great chance for us to see some new X-Men. Deadpool and Gambit would be obvious choices for these films considering their last histories with the

During a panel featuring comic book movie composers and director Jeff Wadlow, he all but confirmed doing an X-Force film so I guess this is officially on the road. I wonder if Jena Malone might make a good Domino.

I think we have reached a point in the superhero movie genre that a crowd really doesn't care if an actor plays 2 or more superheros. Ryan Reynolds has even played both sides of the field.
Chris Evans I believe has played 3 characters if you want to count his character from the Losers.
I would worry they would make him look to much like Storm Shadow from the GI Joe franchise with an added trench coat.

She possesses the ability to generate psychic blades (an ability that the Earth-616 Psylocke only manifested after switching bodies with Kwannon) that can affect physical matter as well as living beings.[volume & issue needed] She frees Charles Lensherr and captured X-Men and has a brief reunion with Logan, for whom she bears an obvious grudge.[119] Psylocke later battles Dagger, defeating her quickly, and uses her psychic blades to counteract the brainwashing of some of the X-Men; first on Jean, who is released from Mr. Sinister's influence, and then on Kirika, which allows the young mutant to remember that Logan and Mariko Yashida are her parents. At the end of the series, Psylocke and the other Japanese members of the X-Men (Sunfire, Kirika, and Silver Samurai) depart for Clan Yashida's refugee colony in New Japan.[120]

In the regular 616, she switched bodies with an Asian women. In AOA 295, she was always an Asian women. Just take a look at her if you are too lazy to read. Common sense says, that's an Asian women.

Umm, although Betsy Braddock is of English birth. She had her race "mystically altered" to asian (this was later retconned to her essentially swapping bodies with the character Kwannon) when she became Psylocke and initially joined up with the X-men. So she was actually portrayed as an Asian character for quite some time in the comics.

If this movie does get made, why do they necessarily have to use more popular characters? If you get talented writers they can write a good enough script that will provide ample information to introduce less popular characters to audiences. Just seems like a non-point when trying to create a spin off to the X-Men franchise. Wouldn't the whole point be to showcase some new characters from that universe?

Yeah, I think you are totally right. I mean X-Men: First Class consisted of some characters that are pretty far down on the X-Men totem pole and helped prove that the brand alone is capable of bringing in a respectable box-office at this point. However, as successful as the movies might be with C-List characters, it will make even more money if they include people like Wolverine and Deadpool. That's pretty much just a fact, and so that's likely exactly what they'll do.

Sounds good....I guess. This is about as useful an article as what the possible title to the Superman/Batman film is going to be. "I've got a great scoop guys. You know that X-Force movie that people have only been talking about and hasn't even been greenlit for production, and doesn't even have a script written yet? You do? Well they might have 6 characters in it!"

Right! I can see them going all over the place with his background, and in turn ruining it all. I suppose to make things somewhat right, they would need to bring back Cyclops, and start with the father/son scenario.
