Mark Ruffalo on Hulk's worst case scenario in Avengers: Age of Ultron

While the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is pretty well laid out for the next several years, the fate of the Hulk is still a gigantic question mark. Without a standalone film of his own, the breakout character from THE AVENGERS seems to have a very significant role in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. The trailers have teased a spectacular showdown between the green skinned monster and Tony Stark's Hulkbuster, but how it figures into the plot and the overall direction for Bruce Banner is still unclear.

Mark Ruffalo, the first actor to portray The Hulk for more than a single film (take that, Eric Bana and Edward Norton) shared some insights into where Banner' head is at in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON with Empire.

“He’s the loose cannon of the group. He’s more like an atom bomb. You could guess where he’s going to go but he could go either way. I think that there is, obviously, the day when everyone expects it to go wrong and that day comes. And they’re ready.”

Ruffalo goes on to say that Banner helped design the contingency plan for if the Hulk went off the rails. I would assume that means the Hulkbuster armor, but it could be something else we haven't seen yet. Some have theorized it could be shooting Banner into space, a storyline popularized in Marvel Comics' Planet Hulk event. While Kevin Feige has not been clear that Hulk has any standalone plans in the future, they also have not confirmed where he might turn up next. I guess we have to wait and see.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON hits theaters on May 1, 2015.

I was rewatching John Carter the other day and it occurred to me how similar to that a Planet Hulk movie would be.
I can imagine if they do another Hulk solo movie they'll actually want to draft in a couple of other Marvel heroes to increase the movie's appeal. Plenty of options and they never know they might hit upon their next unexpected breakout character.

Considering how important Planet Hulk was, I am kind of surprised they haven't really touched on it. Or World War Hulk. I think it would be interesting to see these two storylines end up as standalone Hulk movies. I kind of figure the reason we haven't seen another standalone Hulk movie is because they simply can't come up with the right story for it yet.

If they're going to pull him from The Avengers....

....then they need to do the space thing. The Hulk is the best thing about the Avengers, and I'm totally on board for lowering my expectations for future films if they are going to lose the first team and replace them with the yawn team. But if they're going to reduce the franchise, I want them to do something cool with the Hulk so I have something to care about.

Careful Marvel....DC is just starting their run of popular superheroes. Don't be in too much of a hurry to give us Ant Man,

For the sake of argument, I am going to assume that the July, 2017 Spider-Man movie will be Spectacular Spider-Man.

So what will Phase 4 look like? Marvel is introducing a lot of new characters in Phase 3 and there could be sequels announced as each of them comes out. That means we could see Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Spectacular Spider-Man 2, Incredible Hulk 2, Ant Man 2, Black Panther 2, Doctor Strange 2 and Inhumans 2 in Phase 4.

Some people are asking for a Black Widow movie. Some people are asking for a Secret Avengers movie. If Marvel doesn't renew the contracts for Downey, Evans, Hemsworth and Ruffalo then they will still have Hawkeye, the Black Widow, Black Panther, the Falcon, the Winter Soldier, Captain Marvel, the Vision, the Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and now Spider-Man and possibly War Machine (if the character isn't killed off in Age of Ultron). I don't know where you are getting that Ant Man and Dr Strange will be joining the Avengers: they aren't even confirmed yet for Infinity War. In any case, we would have so many characters in the Avengers (including possibly the Wasp) that it would simply be too many and the only way we could have everyone would be if Phase 4 had separate movies like Secret Avengers and Mighty Avengers, each with a completely different line up. If it came to that then they would probably recast the Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America and Thor. Or not. But, let's face it, they will have to recast everybody eventually as the actors get older. It's just a matter of how and when.

As long as they continue to do Hulk justice throughout the MCU. He could always show up co-headlining in GOTG, Dr. Strange, any virtually any of the other films on the Horizon over the next few years. Whatever they do, don't just cast him in The Avengers...

I just want a sequel already with Ruffalo. Just go from what Incredible Hulk started (universe wise) and from where it ended storywise. Hell, bring back Abomination at this point too.

I hope the Hulk talks this time

Looking forward to it, really hoping there is some Hulky goodness left that we have not seen yet.

REALLY interested in seeing how the Hulk progresses throughout Age of Ultron. The full Empire interview touches on how Banner will struggle to control the Hulk again, which is curious after how The Avengers ended with Banner seemingly able to control the Hulk at will. The character has always had one of the most interesting dichotomies in all of Marvel, and Whedon has really tapped into why audiences love it. Can't wait to see what he has up his sleeve with Age of Ultron...though my gut
