Mark Ruffalo says Marvel "now considering" a solo Hulk film after Avengers 2

Jun. 17, 2014by:

If there was any movie that fans clamored for more after THE AVENGERS than a solo film for the Hulk, I don't know what it is. But, here we are almost all of the way through Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe release slate and the only upcoming appearance for the big guy is AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. But, according to Mark Ruffalo, that may not be the only project for long.

In an interview with Digital Spy for his musical film BEGIN AGAIN, Ruffalo said that while there is nothing in development officially at this point, not even a script or plot outline, Hulk may smash on his own soon.

"I think they are, for the first time, entertaining the idea of it. When we did THE AVENGERS it was basically 'No!', and now there is some consideration for it."

Far and away, Hulk was the highlight for me in the first AVENGERS and he is supposed to have a much larger role in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, possibly with a romance involving Black Widow. Since AVENGERS, many fans have called for a WORLD WAR HULK or PLANET HULK film while Marvel head Kevin Feige has remained mum on what they could do with Bruce Banner and his alter ego. With some of the Phase Three films still unannounced, maybe there is a chance one could be a Hulk project. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY crossover, anyone?

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is slated to open May 1, 2015.

Red Hulk

They could take big liberties with the Red Hulk origin storyline, and create a pretty good "Hulk was framed" storyline that requires Banner to solve the mystery and clear his name, and have a believable opponent.

The next Hulk movie should have brawling and destruction on a 'Man of Steel' level, leading to the Hulk's exile from Earth at the hands of the Avengers. Then you can have your Planet Hulk movie.

I don't get why Marvel never put this on the fast track. Was it because of the whole Edward Norton debacle? Can someone please explain?

I'm calling it now! If Guardians of the Galaxy turns out to be a hit Marvel will go ahead with a Planet Hulk movie. I have a feeling they are waiting to see if the general public is into crazier (yeah yeah, I know, they are comic book movies) out of this world stories.

Here's my idea

Daredevil 2, Heroes for Hire, MoonKnight. Hulk and Defenders 2 on Netflix. It isn't the Defenders without the Hulk.

I'm surprised Marvel hasn't considered any team-up/duo films outside the Avengers. The Hulk does his best stuff when he's teamed up with someone else, and some of these characters are going to have a tough time carrying solo sequels all alone. I really hope it doesn't take Batman v. Superman: Trial Court raking in cash for Marvel to realize that putting two characters together is a good idea. That should be something they ALREADY know, given their experience with it in comics..

I would much rather have a Incredible Hulk sequel, then a Ant Man origins film (even more so now since Edgar Wright left the project). It's just such bullshit that we haven't seen one appearance of the Green guy since Iron Man 3.....and that was like for 30 seconds.

And Ruffalo is too great of an actor not to be utilized more as the tormented scientist.

In the end credits scene. It was Banner we saw, but not Hulk. I screwed up the wording.

How many solo films are in phase 3, since there are 4 in phase 2. We have Antman and Dr. Strange planned, with Thor 3 and Capt America 3 pretty much certain. A GotG sequel is possible, but I'd prefer another Hulk film.

The first solo Hulk film was schizophrenic and the second one was lackluster. So frankly I'd like to see a reboot of the origin story with Ruffalo, a prequel if you will. Why not? They rebooted Spiderman after only a few years.

I'd also like to see Planet Hulk.

What they could do is : Hulk in Avengers 2 gets mind controlled by someone, maybe ScarletWitch or Thanos and basically is mind controlled in the second half of the film and used to smash and destroy which at the end of the movie leading stark and Avengers to agree and realizing upon that Hulk is too dangerous, and the earth(NEW YORK) might not stand a chance ,since Hulk's power grows .So maybe at the end maybe they could/would decide upon sending him to another Galaxy or sooo (with the aid of

I would love a Hulk Vs WOlvy movie but that's not gonna happen any time soon as we all know...FOX SUCKS!

I just cannot wait or this.

They were stupid not to make one after he stole the show in the first Avengers movie. I just pray that it won't be the Planet Hulk or World War Hulk story that everyone seems to want. Great comics sure, but they just would not work in the cinematic universe.

we will see

As much as I'm pumped for GOTG, I don't think it will set the world on fire like other Marvel projects. Also, as much a fan I am of Hulk, unless they really make it more of a complex or whatever story to appeal to the masses...what I'm trying to saying is I can totally see a team up or crossover with him and GOTG,further opening up that world. Maybe they tie a Planet Hulk story with it...sorry for my obtrusive rant...but that's my 2 cents following that article.

How big of the pie is Disney willing to let Universal get.

Universal still owns the distribution rights to a solo hulk film as far as I know.
