Mark Strong is a rumored contender for the role of Lex Luthor in Man of Steel 2

Jun. 24, 2013by: Alex Maidy

With the rumors that WB is fast-tracking MAN OF STEEL 2 for next year, the rumors have been swirling as to what this means for the DC universe. Warner Bros has yet to deny that we will be seeing a sequel to the hit Superman reboot next year which doesn't make it true but certainly stirs the Internet to a high level of speculation.

High atop the list of rumors is who will be Superman's foe in MAN OF STEEL 2. With the references to LexCorp throughout Metropolis it would only make sense for Lex Luthor to be Kal-el's adversary as the crumbled city tries to rebuild. Lex has always been the only human that truly poses a threat to the Kryptonian superhero which means an actor with enough presence to go toe to toe with Henry Cavill would be needed.

Cosmic Book News is claiming an exclusive that says director Zack Snyder wants British actor Mark Strong to play Luthor. Strong has prior comic book experience having played the villain in KICK-ASS as well as Sinestro in GREEN LANTERN. If Strong does get the part as Luthor, I would expect that to put the final nail in the coffin for Ryan Reynolds to play Hal Jordan in the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie.

Strong would make an excellent Luthor. While I have a childhood connection to Gene Hackman as Luthor, his take on the villain never felt like much of a threat to Superman. Strong is physically more imposing and has the ability to lose his shit in just the right way to make him seem threatening to even a superhero. I would fully back this casting if it turns out to be true.

The exclusive also says that pre-production on MAN OF STEEL 2 will likely begin in October of this year with filming next year. That would put the sequel in theaters in 2015, not next year as the first rumors suggested. They say that Christopher Nolan will have less input on the new script which David Goyer has begun drafting. Jonathan Nolan may assist with later drafts.

With Jeff Robinov leaving WB, the DC films have lost their biggest supporter, but the studio also cannot deny that MAN OF STEEL is a success. Whether these rumors come to fruition remains to be seen, but expect to hear more as this develops.

Extra Tidbit: Remember folks, this is just a rumor, so we should take it with a grain of salt, but it is still fun to fantasy cast, isn't it?

You'll all laugh, but I still envision Mel Gibson playing Luthor.

As much as I would love Darkseid, he seems much more like a villain for Justice League movie, if it ever happens.

Lex

I definitely cool with Mark Strong as Lex Luthor, as much as I would like Kevin Spacey back, Mark would be my second choice. Although I wouldnt mind other possibly actors being mentioned.

Sounds fine to me

Just saw mos, all i can say is wow! To me the best superman yet, snyder did a very good job, i am from holland and everyone i speak about it says they loved the movie, really dont understand a lot of the negativity thats surrounding this movie, the scene on krypton blew me away, snyder made a georgeous krypton and actually wouldnt mind if they made a whole movie about krypton, this is the first time superman actually looked indestructible, the ending was also perfect, i would be dissapointed

Also, as much as MoS needs a very different Luthor, Rosenbaum was undeniably the standout in the generally poor Smallville. Take from that what you will.

I enjoyed Man of Steel, but wasn't blown away. Still, as with the Spider-Man reboot, I expect the sequel to be better. I suppose there's pressure for a big name Luthor, but a lesser-known like Cavill was would be exciting.

If they do go with Strong, I'd like see him be Luthor that appeals to a cynical world. A man who wins over the masses of Metropolis and America not by charm or good works, but because they see him as a man of conviction, or a lesser/necessary evil. The Joker worked in TDK

He's become too much of the "go to villain" for movies. Whenever a movie needs a villain, they cast Strong.

Great casting choice....A lot of fans are thinking it's going to be another superman vs lex luthor movie, which i don't blame them...but bare in mind in recent dc media, Lex luthor hires villains to kill superman. Injustice is an example of this (and also one of the best fighting games of the year). If anything, DC should take a page from the Injustice game.

Mark Strong is a great actor, and I'm sure if he is cast he'll do a great job.

HOWEVER. Mark Strong projects an "evil" vibe - that's why he plays so many villains, and plays them so well. Lex Luthor's greatest strength (as a villain and a character) is when he's the "nice, upstanding good-guy citizen" who's just trying to uplift humanity. That should be how the public sees him. The public should love him after he helps rebuild Metropolis.
It should always make Superman look like a dick

It should always make Superman look like a dick when he publicly goes after Lex - that's why he's Supes greatest villain.

Superman can't just punch him and everyone cheers. If they were smart, they'd hire a more charming, "hero" actor.

Strong has that "charming" side. But he also has that "don't fuck with me" intensity that would juxtapose nicely. Spacey's Lex was smart but cooky, definitely ruthless, but not imposing. String can bring something different to the Lex/Supes dynamic

PLEASE . . . not another . . . .

Superman vs. Lex movie!!!! i'm soooooooooo tired of watching that battle! i do believe that there were many other super villains that were much more interesting & capable of giving Superman one heck of a fight. i understand the deep history behind the two, but it has been overkill with Lex in every darn movie or T.V. show.

How about Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor?

I like Mark Strong but he has been the baddie in too many movies recently! Sherlock Holmes, Green Lantern - Sinestro, Kick Ass, etc. I want an inspired choice when casting Lex - just like they got Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon in MoS.
Not saying Rosenbaum is the best guy to go to, but I will be happy to see him as Luthor (he has done it already, he knows this Luthor shit). But yes, an inspired choice for Lex and I will be happy.

Great actor

Love Mark Strong in absolutely everything he played...
I would love to watch Brainiac finally on big screen. and they could even put Lex Luthor befriend Superman and pulling all the strings in the background, revealing himself in the end of the movie (it wouldn't be much of a surprise for the audience), setting up the third one.

Please don't let Lex Luthor become the Magneto of Superman films. As much as I like Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender, Magneto's constant interference is what kept other potential villains (that we should have seen by now) like Mr.Sinister and Apocalypse at bay. I think we've seen enough of Lex Luthor. Let him be the "villain in the dark" while Superman battles intergalactic baddies like Doomsday or Darkseid or heck, Lobo for all I care.

For the love of god someone please help David Goyer write the sequel. I'm usually not one to rag on writers like people do for Lindelof and Orci but the MoS script was a complete mess. Some how I managed to enjoy the movie (perhaps Synder's direction or the great cast) but the script needed a good 3 rewrites ATLEAST! Perhaps even someone else coming in and doing a rewrite. No shame in that.

I think it's still early days and this probably isn't very substantiated, but Mark Strong as anyone in anything is usually a good thing. I've never thought of him for Luthor, but it makes sense and he would rock the part - if this turns out to be true, that is.

I have to admit to my biased dislike for the last superman film. Now that is in the clear, I would enjoy this very much. Mark Strong has been known to play very prestigious villainous roles and pulled them off successfully before. No reason to believe he cannot do it again. He has the acting chops and can bring some well added layering to the character. I am all for it, no matter who is reporting the story.

Oh wait, I forgot that this is Alex Maidy reporting. Which means it's based on rumour, conjecture and rampant speculation. As to Mark Strong as Luthor, I'll believe it when it's officially announced.

Mark Strong would be a brilliant Lex Luthor, but I'm torn if he does play him because I really want to see Ryan Reynolds return for Green Lantern. Unless they recast Sinestro. Then I would be fine with it.

If Strong is casted though I would be excited. It's just that I really really want continuation of the first Green Lantern film. I'm a stickler for continuity.

I think this a good idea, but Man of Steel isn't success. It's only done slightly better than Superman Returns. Sure it's only the second week, but it's already dropped to third place. Do you think it'll earn more than 20 mil before it leaves theaters? My gut tells me they pull the plug on the sequel in the long run. This isn't a family friendly film, and Superman is a hero for all ages. I think that's why it failed.

Slightly better is not the term. It made twice as much for its opening. Returns made a total of 391 million world wide while MOS has already past that coming into its second week. It still has four major countries to open in. It will easily pass 600 million worldwide and as far as just in America, it has past Returns in its second week by 10 million and that's with three big movies opening with and right after it. It is definitely a success for being the first of a new era for DC. Was some of

But I'm more excited to see the aftermath and build up of more Supers to be exposed to that world since one nearly helped destroy a major city.

Luthor & Brainiac

It made perfect sense to me that Zod was the 'villain' of MOS, but my fear was that we'd be seeing a superhero Vs a 'super'villain too soon and, expecting Luthor for the sequel, it would be tough to outdo. Lex may be the iconic villain but - in film- he can be a bit weak and even a joke. I don't think for a second that's what Snyder, Goyer and the Nolan team would do but... There does need to be more humour. I think Mark Strong would be a good choice, having displayed a talent for both

I do think there needs to be a second villain though, to top Zod, and for me seeing Brainiac would be top choice. It's a shame he's been neglected thus far. Benedict Cumberbatch would be awesome in this role.

A showdown between Cavill and a tag-team of Strong & Cumberbatch would be gold if you ask me (if a little bit of a britfest).

For what it's worth, I do think Kevin Spacey WOULD have been a top choice for Luthor had he not been wasted on Superman Returns (such a shame)

Can't wait to see what takes shape for the sequel

Hell yeah

I was thinking about potential Luthors earlier today and Strong didn't come to mind, but he'd be excellent. I was thinking someone like Daniel Craig, but his Bond commitment probably wouldn't let that happen. Funny how an already bald actor might get the part. Also - I really hope Jonathan Nolan helps with the script. Goyer is a great idea man but his screenplays lack when he doesn't have help.

If Man Of Steel followed Nolan's 'Dark Knight' formula

In terms of villains only:

I. Ra's Al Ghul & General Zod (portrayed by Liam Neeson & Michael Shannon)
1. Not the most famous villain, yet clearly a worthy adversary.
2. Cut from the same cloth as the hero. Worthy goals, but are morally compromised.
3. Will stop at nothing, so the hero does what is necessary.
("..But I don't have to 'save' you." / Kal-El's nifty neck massage)

II. The Joker & Lex Luthor (Portrayed by Jack Nicholson/Heath Ledger & Gene Hackman/Kevin Spacey)
1.

1. You knew he was coming. Been done before, but not correctly. (L. Luthor)
2. The #1 foe & a scheming mastermind.

III. Bane & Doomsday (Portrayed by Tom Hardy & n/a)
1. The game changer.
2. Barely known by the public.
3. Used because of their connection to a popular story.
4. Absolutely destroys the hero at his own game.

Just something I saw on We love Superman & thought it'd be cool if Snyder, Nolan & WB went that route

Same formula, but I am seeing a much higher level of acting quality in the Batman series than the Superman series. So are you planning on killing off Superman in the third film and taking a bs DC approach and magically bringing him back to life?

That sounds like a really good idea. On the off chance WB gets their shit together, Brainiac could be saved as the villain for a Justice League movie. I loved the story in Justice Leage Unlimited where Lex Luthor and Brainiac become one entity and JL needs to stop them. The whole thing ends with Flash running so fast he knocks the Brainiac tech off of Lex Luthor and inadvertantly sends himself into the speedforce. I would want to see that made into a movie for the sole purpose of seeing the

Wow, a lot of down voting. I'm sorry I wasn't playing "how many creepy bald white actors can you name?". With many of the Superman animated series/movies I grew up with a black Lex. So I looked for an actor that could play the role with a certain level of charm/charisma but who could also be creepy/intense when the role calls for it.

I don't remember if he was on the first animated series, but I know he was on one of the recent animated Justice League shows and a couple of the DC Universe animated movies. Race really doesn't matter, I just felt like Elba would bring qualities to the character that would be a good fit.

Not bad, but to echo at lot of others on this board, he is a bit over exposed in the movie villain department. I always liked the idea of Bryan Cranston as Lex.

Lets name the reason why. 1. He plays nothing but bad guys. 2. he's bald.

I like Strong, but he's been a villain in so many films this casting seems so safe and predictable. I feel like he's rumored just b/c he's got a bald head. The next rumor will probably be vin diesel.

Of course he is

Couldn't have a movie without Mark Strong as the villain now could we? Well hopefully it'll be better than Meh of Steel, not that that'll be too hard.

Think Strong could play a pretty cool Brainiac too...much like the Brainiac from the Superman animated series.

Now the dust has settled from my little tantrum of being very disappointed with Man of Steel, the idea that the collateral damage caused by both Superman and the invading Kryptonians might be the direction Synder and co are heading in, has picked me up somewhat. Lex being in part 2 would further substantiate this being the direction they're heading in and this casting rumour has me quite happy too.

I like Strong and enjoyed many of his performances at a time when I didn't even know who he was - liked him in Kick Ass and John Carter but such was my ignorance of him...I didn't know they were the same actor - I kept muttering to myself while watching Carter - where have I seen this guy before. Enjoyed his performance in Sherlock Holmes too but again, didn't know it was him at the time. I knew it was him by the time I saw Green Lantern...but that film sucked so bad...I honestly don't remember anything other than remembering how much it sucked and the end credits teaser that didn't really make sense since one Green Lantern was clearly enough to win the day...so who needed yellow light!

Anywayz, all in all...happy with this casting rumour and the hope that the film is going to explore the collateral damage/fear of super powered beings angle.

Since Brits are hot right now.

Why not give this to Clive Owen? He has an edge similar to Strong with that unknown factor of how he'd handle the role.

I'm sure he'd be fine but..

Like some other people said.. we've seen him play the villain on my multiple occasions. I feel like it would lessen his impact if that makes any sense. It's a shame Green Lantern was subpar. He really was a perfect Sinestro.

I'm cool with it. Big Mark Strong fan. It's a little weird with him being Sinestro, but I get the growing feeling that DC is going to jettison the whole Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern universe and start over anyway.

Boring

With so many things fresh in this new Superman saga, using an actor that's been a weak villain so much (Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood, Green Lantern, Kick Ass, John Carter) seems like a step back to me. Also, even though actors his age can work hard for the required physique like Hugh Jackman, he's never done that before for a film. I love when actors mould themselves into their characters, hate when a character is moulded to accomodate into an actor. Lex should be younger than any incarnation

Why the fuck would he need to work himself into shape? Lex Luthor was previously played by Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey.

Ehhh...feels too obvious. I'd prefer to see someone without a history of playing the bad guy take on the role. Someone who could make it their own like Ledger did with Joker or Anne Hathaway did with Catwoman.

To me Strong's always been more entertaining and memorable when he's not a pure villain (Body of Lies, RocknRolla.) And to be true to the comics, you need someone around the same age as Cavill. Casey Affleck or Jake Gyllenhaal perhaps.

Though physically I like the idea. We need

Strong as Lex would be great, but I say just get Kevin Spacey back, and cut down on the hammyness.

I hope no one suggests Michael Rosenbaum though. Smallville sucked.

Hell yes.

Mark Strong is a major contender for this generation's Alan Rickman: a smart, calculating villain who makes a movie better just by being in it. I've been following him since STARDUST and I think he'd make an excellent Lex Luthor. I'd still like to see him take on something other than a villain, though. I think he has the range for it.

i can dig it.

qualities i'm looking for in a Lex Luthor:
- believable as a genius (lex is the world's smartest man)
- physically imposing (lex is supposed to the be the epitome of human physique)
- portrays a sense of duty over evil (lex hates superman only because he can cheat humanity's struggles)
- douchebaggery (lex is always cold and calculating)
- older and wiser than Cavill (lex should have more worldy experience and wisdom than superman)

eh, that's all i can think of now. i think mark strong

Mark Strong was never the villain in the Green Lantern. He barely received any screen time and he seems like he'd be given more to chew on with Superman. Plus, I don't even think the general audience will remember he was even in Green Lantern, let alone the entire movie itself.

I'd be surprised if he took the role. He's been the villain in so many movies he's probably worried about typecasting himself.

Not that he wouldn't excell as Lex. Strong is a great actor but I just don't seem him taking on another villain role in a superhero movie.

I think the next movie needs earth based villians so a lex/metallo story would work best in my opinion

i was hoping there would be an after credits scene in man of steel of a man with a bald head shot from behind walks into a room and the camera lifts up over him to reveal zods body on an examining table. then fade to black
