Mark Wahlberg admits that M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening was 'a bad movie'

11.22.2010

While the majority of us already knew that M. Night Shyamalan's 2008 eco-terror flick THE HAPPENING was a truly retarded piece of filmmaking, it's heartening to hear that movie's principal star Mark Wahlberg being so candid in his admission of that fact. That's not something we see everyday (and especially not so relatively soon after a film's release).

During a press conference this past weekend for David O. Russell's upcoming THE FIGHTER, Wahlberg was asked to talk about his co-star Amy Adams when the actor wound up revealing just a wee bit more...

"I was such a huge fan of [Amy Adams]. We'd actually had the luxury of having lunch before to talk about another movie, and it was a bad movie that I did. She dodged the bullet. I don’t want to tell you what movie… alright, THE HAPPENING with M. Night Shyamalan. It is was it is. F*cking trees, man, the plants. F*ck it. You can’t blame me for wanting to try to play a science teacher, you know? I wasn’t playing a cop or a crook."

I really applaud Wahlberg's 'f*ck it' attitude because it's just SO refreshing to see. Not surprisingly, the audience during the press conference erupted in laughter after the actor's comments. Shyamalan must be spinning in his grave!

The Happening

It was a remake of The Birds without the birds. I think it worked very well. Mark Wahlberg did a great job and really sold the movie even though there was really nothing to fear but "f*cking trees". Of course a lot of actors hate to see themselves in movies so, yeah, it makes sense that he'd hate it.

Anyway, I'm sure he meant to say "It is what it is" and what it was was a decent movie.

I dunno, I didn't mind The Happening. It had some good scenes. It had some crap scenes as well. In a mediocre movie he wasn't even the highlight, though he has been pretty good in a number of other films.

I haven't seen "The Happening." I don't really plan to. Mark Wahlberg is one of the few actors around who can just slam his movie, or another showbiz sort, and kind of get away with it, because no matter how much he buys into the whole Hollywood thing, he's still from the streets of Boston. Doesn't matter if that's still who he is or not, he'll get a pass on it. People also enjoy celebrities being candid. Especially with a punching-bag like Shyamalan. As an actor, it's a little different. He

I look at this the same way that I look at Harrison Ford dissing Han Solo. No, I'm not saying The Happening was a great movie like Star Wars but Harrison Ford didn't say Star Wars was bad either: he just called Han Solo "Han Yoyo", that's all.

Shyamalan spinning in his grave? He's not dead.

It is cool to see Wahlberg admit he was in a bad film. Of course I guess it's easier to admit when it's not you that made the film bad. It did have good cinematography and parts of it were pretty eerie. Like when people started falling off of rooftops, but the story just wasn't there.

It's supposed to be a play on the fact that his film career might as well be. If it weren't for his ties to Devil, he'd be--no wait, he still is--a miserable wreck and shell of what he used to be.

The Happening was big time shit, but actors shouldn't talk trash about their previous works unless that movie ruined their acting career, and come on, I know that the happening far from original was a lame excuse for a horror movie, but Max Payne was far worst, and his is not talking trash about that film or director John Moore. You took your own decisions dude, and you make your own achievements and disgraces, so next time read the fuckin script first so you don't have to be in a fuckin movie

yea I guess I agree with you somewhat, but sometimes it's hard to figure out if a movie is gonna be good or not, and in his defense it was a chance to work with Shyamalan who has done some really good films.

Look. The Happening was pretty bad but I've found that I actually get a kick out of watching it. Mark and Zooey gave such incredibly lousy performances that after about 5 minutes, I'm already laughing. Then you have the fact that there is an incredible amount of suspense (if in the end it had turned out to be something cool, not plants, the movie was actually doing pretty good). I mean the whole thing was just a cheesy throwback to the 50's sci fi movies. I've come to not hate the movie. That's

Rispekt

I think I understand what Mark is saying. Up to that point, Shyamalan still had some good will and I am sure he pitched the film to Wahlberg as a throw back to B-horror films of the 1950's, but with killer trees instead of giant Killer Bees. Plus, while some scripts are obviously crap or obviously very good, most scripts fall in the middle and there's really no way to tell until you start filming. Then you have M. Night behind it so he gets allowances with script strength other people don't and

Plus, while some scripts are obviously crap or obviously very good, most scripts fall in the middle and there's really no way to tell until you start filming. Then you have M. Night behind it so he gets allowances with script strength other people don't and Wahlberg has never taken himself too seriously as an actor in terms of the roles he picks and I'm sure he didn't think he'd win any awards doing the Happening. Max Payne sucked, too. But like others said, he clearly tries hard and takes film making seriously and the Happening was a gigantic fuck up that made everybody look bad. When not one single actor in the film gives a good performance, you have to think it's a director directing a bad performance out of them and then putting the reel in the can, so to speak. Also you have to realize, anybody but Sir Laurence Olivier (or maybe even him, too) is going to come off horribly when reciting lines about a killer breeze coming from killer trees that don't move. Hell, I doubt even Morgan Freeman, god of the narrators, could have pulled off those stupid lines. I acquit, thee, Mark Wahlberg. May you rise like the phoenix from the ashes of recent trash (including the Lovely Bones, which wasn't entirely your fault) you have been in, to reclaim what glory you possess with the Fighter

Unlike Alba,

I think Mark tries hard to be the best actor he can be. Sure he might take garbage for a paycheck or because he thinks something is cool (Max Payne), but can't really blame him since he always bounces back in his next few films.

And about the Happening, I'm sure Night think it sucked also, but thought at the time of filiming it was masterpiece.

That was uncalled for. I remember Alba from the Dark Angel series. She was red hot back then. She should have stuck to action films though because it turned out she didn't have much of a range. But so what? Fuck you arm chair critics I say.

I feel this is the attitude you have to have when working as an actor...yah know? I think when you start to NOT say fuck it, about the job itself, and start to take yourself too seriously, you become stale, and do less and less good work with the bad. Because there's a lot of good that comes out of the fuck it mentality when taking creative chances, more good than bad I feel bc you're open to just jumping in and trying new things.

Too bad Mark doesn't go on to admit that he is only capable of a good performance with a good director pulling the strings. What a douche. But he's right, The Happening sucked beyond comprehension.

Imagine the stories indeed. They should make a book, have the industry people tell all the behind the scenes tales without having to give their names if they don't dare. Shyamalan managed to mess up Airbender...that's about equal to being dead.

Didn't you read the script?

Pretty lame to come out and trash the movie and Shyamalan after you did it. Hey Wahlberg, if you read the script you've got no one to blame but yourself for being in it! And obviously it was just a horrendous experience that he never wants to work with Shyamalan again.

Well, since I am getting all this thumb-down action.. I thought The Mist had a very promising start, with all those people trapped inside this supermarket or whatever, you got that Stephen King vibe going on there, but I just think the rest of the movie is downright disappointing. Anf don't get me started on that ending..

Another actor that bites the hand that feeds him years later. I think the movie sucks too but I didn't get publicity and a fat paycheck from it like Mark did.

Guess what Mark...it's not like your performance made the movie any more tolerable.

I liked "The Happening" for what it was, but it was one of those movies that was so bad that it was good. Definitely have seen worse movies.

Good for Wahlberg throwing out the f-bombs. Glad to see one of M. Night Shymalan's actors come out and said that his movie sucked.
