Mark Wahlberg and Liam Neeson offered leads in Vincenzo Natali's Neuromancer

07.31.2012

William Gibson's seminal cyberpunk novel NEUROMANCER looks to be very close to finally becoming a movie. Movie Hole is reporting that pay or play offers have been made to both Mark Wahlberg and Liam Neeson for the starring roles in the film from screenwriter/director Vincenzo Natali.

Plot: Case was the hottest computer cowboy cruising the information superhighway--jacking his consciousness into cyberspace, soaring through tactile lattices of data and logic, rustling encoded secrets for anyone with the money to buy his skills. Then he double-crossed the wrong people, who caught up with him in a big way--and burned the talent out of his brain, micron by micron. Banished from cyberspace, trapped in the meat of his physical body, Case courted death in the high-tech underworld. Until a shadowy conspiracy offered him a second chance--and a cure--for a price....

Wahlberg would play Henry Dorsett Case, the drug addicted hacker and main character of the story. Neeson would presumably play Armitage, a former soldier whose mind begins to disintegrate as the story progresses.

NEUROMANCER essentially created the cyberpunk genre. It is unfortunate that it has taken this long for it to make it to the big screen. Natali is a visually creative director. Both SPLICE and CUBE are well made science fiction films. If Wahlberg and Neeson join the cast, we may finally get the lackluster JOHNNY MNEMONIC out of our minds. But, if all goes according to schedule, NEUROMANCER won't film until next year for a 2014 release.

What do you think of the possible casting of Wahlberg and Neeson for NEUROMANCER?

Neeson, yes. Wahlberg, no.

Case is supposed to be in his 20's, not in his 40's.
Now to find out who they'll cast as Molly...

Neeson Yes, Wahlberg, not so much.

Considering Case is supposed to be in his early 20s, Mark is a bit beyond. Give it to someone like Dave Franco.

loved the book

itd be cool to see this made into a movie (if done right). but i say NO to Mark Walberg. I like Vishal's comment about Ryan Gosling - thatd be interesting. I'd personally like Hugh Jackman or Edward Norton (haven't seen him in a leading role in awhile)

Cube is one of my favourite films, so this definitely piques my interest. A bit iffy on Wahlberg though for this role--smells of star power being used to fuel a production. But that's economics for you, I guess.

Also, if you haven't seen it, check out Natali's flick Nothing--a very odd, surreal little film. Kind of fun.

Not Mark Walberg please!

Mark doesn't fit the role, please give someone else a chance... I think Ryan Gosling fits this perfectly, even Logan Marshall Green.

Could it be we finally get two amazing cyberpunk films, both this and Snowcrash???
And helmed by two exiting new talented directors?!
I'm just not very keen on Marky as a lead actor, even if Keanu, who is even blander, did ok with Matrix...

More Natali PLEASE

Never read the book, but anything Natali makes I will be there. The guy needs to get more projects off the ground.

Neeson is a good choice for Armitage, but I always pictured Case being younger than Wahlberg.

Johnny Mnemonic was based on a short story by the same author, set in the same universe
