Mark Wahlberg on wanting to play Iron Man after RDJ and "dodging a bullet" with Batman & Robin

Aug. 15, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

Mark Wahlberg/Iron Man

I'll always have a soft spot for Mark Wahlberg and it's because of three movies he did between 1997 and 1999: BOOGIE NIGHTS, THE BIG HIT and THREE KINGS. He was great in FEAR and he's done some awesome work since, but those three films are why I love me some Marky Mark.

Wahlberg is currently making the rounds promoting 2 GUNS, and in an interview yesterday with Yahoo! Movies UK the actor says he would love to play Iron Man after Robert Downey Jr. retires from playing the character.

I would like to take over the 'Iron Man' franchise for Robert Downey [but] it’s one of those things where I kind of like playing real people, [so] I’ve never been asked.

I'm sure Wahlberg enjoys portraying real people more, but obviously he has no problem playing fictional characters. Although Mark Wahlberg hasn't appeared in a comic book movie (yet), apparently he was being considered to play Robin in BATMAN FOREVER, which also would have meant he probably would have also appeared in the infamous BATMAN & ROBIN

Once I was kind of being talked about for the Robin role in ‘Batman [Forever]' (laughs) Somebody dodged a bullet!

Mark Wahlberg also went on a bit of a rant about about how too many films are filled with CGI and visual effects:

You know, there’s so many effects-driven movies. What people have a tendency to forget, because you look at a lot of the trailers and the summer movies that came out… they all look very similar. Certainly all the end of the world movies. It’s like you can only do so much with effects. I don’t think any person sitting at home watching a television spot, a 15-second spot or a 30 second spot, is gonna say ‘Oh I’m gonna go see a movie because I haven’t seen that!’ You’ve seen it all before. People haven’t been wowed by effects since ‘Jurassic Park’ or ‘Perfect Storm’ with the wave, you know? It’s like now everybody does everything. It’s all kind of the same sh*t. They’re recycling a lot of the stuff.

I agree with some of what Mark Wahlberg says, but with some of these films (especially comic book movies) CGI is necessary. And while many of us love how detailed the effects are now and how big of a scope some of the destruction can be, it's the story and characters we are more concerned with, not the CGI. I think most movie buffs will look past some shitty looking CGI if the movie as a whole is good, but if the film is just awesome CGI and nothing else, that's when we do get annoyed.

You can check out the full interview with Mark Wahlberg below. The actor can next be seen in the Peter Berg film LONE SURVIVOR, which will have a limited release on December 27th, 2013 before hitting theaters nationwide on January 10th, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: Which comic book character do you think would be a good fit for Mark Wahlberg?

Starky Stark?
I think not.
I don't think RDJ is irreplaceable, but he's certainly gonna be a tough act to follow. That recasting (when it happens) might be Marvel's toughest casting job yet.

Mark couldn't even convince anyone as a high school science teacher (The Happening), he sure as hell couldn't pull off billionaire tech genius.

"Hey guys, I'm Iron Man. Say hi to your mother for me!"

Yeah Mark, you and fifty other bozos, get in line. Seems Mr. Bay has inspired you on how to screw franchises. Oh wait, you already screwed Max Payne.

Absolutely fucking not. Christ. What a thought.

Only guy I can think of for Stark would be Luke Evans... but frankly I'd prefer Evans as Dr. Strange. He has the look, and the chops, and he's a rising star.

I have never thrown Marks name out there when doing superhero dream casting, and God did RDJ set the bar almost impossibly high for whoever has to take on this responsibility when he decides to leave... But surprisingly... I would be kind of okay with Whalberg. Not sure why, but I could kind of see it working.

We arent buying what you are trying to sell, Mr. Marky Mark

There is no way Marky Mark could ever be Tony Stark...RDJ owns the Tony Stark role...and years ahead, when we look back at IRON MAN series (provided there are not remakes), it will be RDJ who did the role best...That being said, if Disney wants to create another IRON MAN movie witihout RDJ, please please pick someone who looks like the character and has the talented acting range to do the role justice.

Hey Mark, where exactly was that cinematic bulletproof vest...

when the scripts for The Happening, Rock Star, Shooter, Max Payne, Planet Of The Apes & Gone in 60 Seconds 2...I mean Contraband, crossed your path?

Nothing against the de-facto leader of the "Funky Bunch"...but the role of Tony Stark is just not a fit for Wahlberg.

This dude keeps crapping on movies that have too much CGI or go balls-to-the-wall with their action (MOS, etc.) and yet he's starring in Transformers 4? Hypocrite.

Sam Rockwell is the ONLY actor that I can think of that could do Tony Stark/Iron Man just as good and as different as Downey Jr.

He was so misused in Iron Man 2.

Note that Wahlberg never mentioned Batman & Robin...

He was referring to dodging a bullet with Batman Forever, not Batman & Robin, as the band wagon-jumping headline would lead you to believe.

At some point Marvel will reboot their cinematic universe and we'll have to get used to a new Tony Stark...as hard as that will be to do...since RDJ will probably forever own the role. You only have to look at how many never took to anyone else voicing Batman after Conroy or the negativity towards Liam McIntyre taking over Spartacus duties after Andy Whitfield (RIP). I can think of a few people after Conroy that did a good Batman voice...and Liam wasn't bad...just both Conroy and Andy were in

I can think of a few people after Conroy that did a good Batman voice...and Liam wasn't bad...just both Conroy and Andy were in the fortunate position of being first...and awesome. It's a huge undertaking being second...when the previous guy was awesome. At this moment in time, I could only see Tom Cruise replacing RDJ as Stark...but that would be my plan B should RDJ quit. For the reboot, it'll be more than likely a rising star...someone new...who may be on the scene right now...but is too young for us to even think about right now. I also liked Mark from the Big Hit and Three Kings and that film he did with Chow Yun Fat (Chow's English follow up to the underrated The Replacement Killers) but I just don't see him as Tony Stark...but that is mostly due to fact that RDJ has played him so amazingly. I'm pretty sure whoever takes on the role of a rebooted Stark... is going to make him completely different... dark...and always serious. If I was going to play Stark after RDJ...I'd do it so no one even thinks of trying to compare us. Heck...I'd fight to bring in the alcoholic problems to his character.

So more in the vein of the new Batman films? I hope not. I would like for Tony Stark to still have a comedic side to him.

That's one thing I didn't enjoy about the Batman films. They never really showed Bruce Wayne having fun being Batman.

By the new Batman films, you mean Nolan's movies? Bale as Bruce in Batman Begins (the dinner scene) and TDK (dinner with Rachel and Dent and sleeping during the business meeting)...was great stuff - no other Bruce Wayne has ever come close to showing that side of Bruce - not even Conroy's take on Bruce Wayne which was the clear winner before Bale came on board (I'm not blaspheming, overall Conroy was still the best! ;o).

As for making a dark Stark funny, no problem...but no need to make him

I'm a fan of Wahlberg and he's done some really solid films and has given some really solid performances, but in no way would I want him to play Iron Man.

Downey Jr and Wahlberg are two different type of caliber actors. Downey Jr being much more charismatic, talented, and also being able to disappear into a role much easier than Wahlberg. I mean can you imagine Wahlberg trying to do what Downey Jr did so successfully well with his character in Tropic Thunder? I can't.

Maybe. But I don't think so when Downey Jr has both the Iron Man/Aveners and Sherlock Holmes franchise to his resume. And has alot of great indie flicks under his belt.

Better resume? RDJ has done classy work like Chaplin, several cool '80s flicks (some Brat Packs), AND has been nominated at the Academy Awards (TWICE). And that isn't including his recent work and small indy flicks like Two Girls and a Guy and Wonder Boys or funny cameos like in Bowfinger. I'm not saying anything against Wahlberg here but he's not in the same class as RDJ.

I could see Mark Wahlberg LOOKING like Tony Stark. But the moment he opens his mouth I'm not going to be able to believe he's a billionaire playboy philanthropist.

People are giving him shit for starring in the next Transformers movie, not necessarily unjustly, but I still kind of admire that he's been as successful as he has over the past few years offering up mostly counter-programming to the big-spectacle kind of movies. And I tend to agree with him about those (although the last time a

I think my issue is that if you are going to take aim at the visual nihilism of overcooked CGI... Transformers might just be at the top of that heap for me.

I can see his demo reel now... Iron Man turns to the camera, the faceplate rolls up, and Tony Stark powerfully intones "say hi to your Mother for me."

2 Guns is based on a graphic novel, that sort of counts. And in response to Mr. Wahlberg, "No."

I hate that word so much.

Mark does know he's working with a director who has actually 'recycled' effects shots from his previous movies, doesn't he?

1. Ahahahahah him as Tony Stark hahah. Also him not being asked because he plays "real" people....ahahaha.
hahahahaha, seriously? He doesn't play "real" characters, he plays characters....from Boston....who look and sound exactly like Mark Wahlberg.

2. He's doing TransFOURmers (they can have that for free)....probably should stop complaining about cardboard cut-out run of the mill CGI heavy action movies.

I think Mark Walberg is right. CGI looks good on TV but people are underwhelmed by it in movies. We want movies that tell a story and obvious CGI takes us out of the movie because we know it is fake. Compare the Green Lantern to Guardians of the Galaxy: we know GOTG is going to use a lot of practical effects and people want to see if it works. It's like the original Star Wars movies with their practical effects versus the prequels with their green screens and CGI. Everything looked fake.

On the other hand, the CGI in Avengers and Avatar was really well done. A movie with a lot of CGI if it works and it doesn't look fake then it can be very successful.
