Mark Wahlberg trying to rally the troops for The Fighter 2

03.15.2011

Mark Wahlberg is bound and determined to get THE FIGHTER into the elite class of Oscar-caliber movies that actually spawned Oscar-caliber sequels.

Speaking to EW, he revealed that he wants to take one more shot at Mickey Ward, something that I'm sure not many people expected to hear.

"I got bit by the bug, and now I’m trying to plant the idea in everyone’s head that we should do — not five or six Fighters likeRocky — but one more because the big thing that Micky Ward was famous for was his three epic battles with Arturo Gatti. So we’re talking about possibly taking one more run at it.

Everybody had such an amazing experience making the movie that I can’t imagine they wouldn’t want to go back. But it’s still kind in the early stages."

I mean, OK...

I don't know what to think of this. I liked THE FIGHTER, despite the fact I'm not usually the biggest fan of Wahlberg's acting or O. Russell's directing, but a sequel? Yes, I'm sure his fights against Gatti were epic, but is there the same kind of drama behind the bouts as there was in the first film? Perhaps, but will audiences still care?

What do you make of this? Should there be a FIGHTER 2?

This wont happen. Bale is to the age where its very risky to put on and off weight like that. especially when its usually from weighing 120 pounds to 225 for TDKR.

If you ever seen the Ward/Gatti fights, then you certainly will want this. I am all for it.

Make a sequel, but recast Wahlberg's role so he'll finally get the message.

Why not?

They should fast track this sucker so that O. Russell and Wahlberg don't have time to fuck up "Uncharted".

Also, Amy Adams will be required to do a full frontal scene.

I'd love the idea of "The Fighter II", but have the main character be Gatti, and have Whalberg's Micky Ward be a secondary character. That's the only way this would make sense.

I just bought The Fighter on blu-ray, easily one of my top 5 movies of last year. I'd be interested in a sequel, but I think it may be better off left alone. Besides, Wahlberg sequels normally don't happen anyway (i.e. Italian Job, Departed, Planet of the Apes).

Absolutely not. It would far too difficult to get all the necessary people back and I don't think you could tell a good enough story and not have a crappy movie. Wahlberg just needs to let The Fighter remain as a great film that did not try to milk our wallets dry by making and unnecessary sequel.

Why?

The only interesting parts of The Fighter were the behind the scenes stuff with his brother and mom, so if the sequel focuses on the fighting it might as well be a Rocky picture.

None of the Rocky movies focused on the fighting, so The Fighter should be no different if there is a sequel.

I'd pay top dollar to see a sequel to The Fighter. Mickey Ward still has a lot of story left to tell.

We should have a Gatti movie instead of a sequel. Gatti his from Montréal and his story is really great too

I guess I'm the only one who would love to see a Fighter 2. One sequel (not multiple sequels) featuring the three Gatti fights would be awesome.

Really?

Just leave it be. It was a great film, so let it stand as a great film. Sequels ruin classics.

The Fighter is a great movie and is one of the best movies of the year and everyone involved should be proud on what they accomplished. Especially Bale and Leo. But in no way should they do a sequel. The movie is great and should not have a sequel. I doubt it would be good as the first and this movie works just fine as a stand alone, one time deal.

Besides, Bale would never want to lose the weight again. He's getting to the the point where that could kill him instead of just being a pain in

Bale won't do the sequel, so this is not going to happen. They may talk about it a little, but really I don't see this getting off the ground. If Wahlberg is really high on the idea, he should just produce a TV series (take it to HBO for crying out loud) and tell Ward's continuing adventures that way with a new cast.

Marky mark is pissed he didnt get an Oscar, while his co-stars did. Rather than try and find something new to make to have another crack at it, he wants to re-live it and try again. Bad idea. The 1st film was good, let people find out about the Micky Ward folklore by themselves, rather than tell them in your own words "what happened after"

Bad Idea

The movie was good but not flawless. The main problem was that the main character (and Wahlberg's performance) was considerably less interesting than the people around him.

Micky Ward the person might be interesting but Micky Ward the movie character doesn't deserve more than one film.

I say no to this simply because it cannot be healthy for Christian Bale's weight to keep fluctuating so severely every few years. Tiny for The Machinist, huge for Batman, tiny for The Fighter, and now huge again for TDKR. Give him some rest.

They should cast Pauly D (Jersey Shore) as Gatti. Another Oscar winning supporting actor. Beat Dat Beat!

Seriously, I think it could be a good movie, but I'm a sucker for boxing movies. I don't expect this sequel to actually happen (Wahlberg tends to invent sequels that will never happen to his better roles, i.e. The Departed).

The Fighter deserves a sequel. Those three fights with Gatti were epic and need to be done. I think the story behind it could be just as intriguing as the first.

Though I was young I saw the repeats of the Gatti fights and they were amazing. I loved the Fighter but I wished they incorporated those fights and if everyone is involved I will gladly see the sequel.
