Marvel CCO Joe Quesada talks Phase Two of Marvel's Cinematic Universe; plus a new outfit for Cap

Jul. 27, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Marvel's Chief Creative Officer, Joe Quesada, recently spilled some info to SFX magazine about the rollout of Phase Two in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, talking about the overall direction, choices, and strategy for the next evolution of their superheroes on the big screen.

"Its going to be really interesting to see what happens next," teased Quesada. "But personally I think that THE AVENGERS now enhances the solo movies because it was so successful. Everyone has their favourite moment or character and now its like weve seen what youve got, so show us some more."

On IRON MAN 3:

"Its going to have some amazing surprises,"he teases. "I dont think people have any idea what its going to be like but its a wonderful take on what the third Iron Man movie should be. We have a really unique perspective on it and were pretty happy with how its shaping up. [Robert Downey Jr.] has really taken the character to some new and interesting places."

On THOR: THE DARK WORLD and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER's direction:

"The goal is to mine different territory to what we have already," he says. "Weve been very lucky and fortunate to [also] have these characters enhanced by the performances of these actors."

On how GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY was selected as the next Marvel film:

"Theres a whole library of Marvel characters that could benefit from these treatments,"he says."What happens is that when one breaks out and is a success, it makes you think that if that character worked then maybe these two or three others that we never thought about before might also work. But we have to be really judicious about how we do these films because you dont want to become your own worst enemy by over-saturating and flooding the market with this stuff."

On the strategy for Marvel's cinematic universe:

"So much of what we do is part of a big collaborative process at Marvel. So were going to stick to our guns and continue doing the things that we want to do in the way that we want to do them. I know that its tough as a fan because fans are impatient, they want to see their favourite character up there but at the end of the day the worst thing that we could do is rush a character to the screen and have it fail because then you dont see them again for decades. Thats why were so strategic about this stuff, because we dont want to hurt any characters or the Marvel brand by rushing out product."

In October, Marvel will begin a relaunch of all of their flagship titles, called Marvel NOW, which will feature a revamped look to all of their characters, including Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, etc. While not a reboot like DC's New 52, this "relaunch" is intended to be a solid jumping on point for new readers. Judging by the designs of the costumes, however, I'd venture that it's a means of tying both the comics and the movies together a bit more.

Check out the Marvel NOW launch image (ironically drawn by CCO Joe Quesada) and new designs for Captain America by artist Jerome Opena, featuring a more "Soldierly" Cap.

Extra Tidbit: Do you prefer the classic version of Captain America's costume or are you down with an updated look? Personally, I think the updated look is solid and I've been reading the comics for more than 20 years.

I can't stand Quesada. His only saving grace is that he's not as much of a douche as Didio over at DC Comics. As to the new Cap suit....... its not new, its pretty much how he looked in the Ultimate universe for 7 or so years that the Ultimates were around.

Paul, actually Avi Arad pulled Marvel's fat from the proverbial fire and was responsible for the initial setup of Marvel Studios, before he retired from all his Marvel duties in 2006 (ie. pushed out by the board members to put Quesada in place). Quesada is okay, but he's just a glorified figurehead.

Why the beef with Quesada? He helped pull Marvel out of the fire when they were in bankruptcy and shaped the Marvel U into what it is today. Arguably, he's one of the reason's the film's have been so successful (or even produced for that matter). AND, he's a great artist.

As for the Cap costume; you're correct, the Ultimate version is very similar, but this is the first time he's adopted this look as a permanent costume in the regular Marvel U.

Opena is great.I want to see that Cap outfit in Opena's really cool colour scheme. On the other hand, Quesada talks without saying anything, like a bloody politician. A bunch of totally empty non-committing phrases.

I Like Iron Man 3....

and the idea of Thor 2 and even like the idea behind "Winter Soldier" (even though there are a whole lot more Cap storylines that could've been used). However, not crazy about the idea behind the new Cap costume. I'm a traditionalist and love the old stuff. And what's with the chin? Cap has always had a cleft chin (Kirk Douglas style) and no cleft chin here.

Damn

Marvel... You have no problems making a movie with a talking raccoon. But when it comes to making a movie about an African Prince that has advanced technology at his disposal, you think people will find it hard to believe. Really?

Marvel can sell more talking raccoon toys, than they can African Prince toys.

Quesada never gives any cool information/news from his interviews. He's like a politician, he never give any good info away.. Luckily Kevin Feige gave some great quotes at Comic-con that have made a lot of comic fans excited. The quote below was given to Jumpkickpunch.com during an interview at Comic-con.

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the only phase two movie that
will be as large scale as the Avengers. Most of the other phase 2 movies
are going to be big events, but they're also going to be very self
contained stories. Captain America 2 on the other hand will have many
things going on that will make it feel much more like The Avengers did.
You're going to see Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Nick (Fury) all returning
for The Winter Soldier. You're also going to see some new heroes in it
like The Falcon. It's gonna be huge, it's our phase two finale movie, so
it's going to be every bit as big as The Avengers was in phase one". -

I would be happy with cap's suit if the pants weren't so tight, his ears were uncovered, and the red and white stripes go all the way around his mid section.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Admit it, Guardians of the Galaxy was chosen because all your good teams are owned by other film companies.
And regarding Marvel Now, it's happening because for the first time in a long long time Marvel was beaten in comic sales. Look at the above picture for it, same type of costume re-designs as the New 52. Also since when are the heroes led by Rocket Raccoon?

The best thing about Cap's new look is the homage to the "scales" of the original outfit, by turning into a hexagonal textural pattern...love that.

Comics for the most part are garbage anymore. The reboot material way worse than Hollywood, and books are some 4 bucks a pop now so no interest in reading them. But I do like the new Cap look.

Have to disagree completely. Comics are absolutely not garbage. It's cool if you don't want to read them, but if you're not, then how could you say they're garbage?

I've been a steady reader since I was 12 and have never let up. I don't buy them just because I don't have anything to do with myself or my money either. I buy them because there are a tremendous amount of amazing artists and writers putting out some outstanding works of art.

Take a trip to your local comic shop and

Take a trip to your local comic shop and flip through some books, maybe a few trades. I think you'll change your mind.

Red Skull

I have this odd feeling that the Red Skull will be coming back in Guardians of the Galaxy.

I'm not THAT fond of the new costumes

Cap's costume is, paradoxally, TOO close from the movie's one for my taste.
Hope's (I guess... PLEASE don't make this character be YET ANOTHER time displaced hero, this time a young Jean Grey) old school X-Men like costume is meh
A SHIELD artificial intelligence flying agent (Let me guess : they JUST introduced COULSON in the comics, so they will 'kill' him and transform him) ? WTF
The (NOW) black FURY and his (NOW) ageing father (the classical white FURY, on the left of the screen, with

The (NOW) black FURY and his (NOW) ageing father (the classical white FURY, on the left of the screen, with -NOW- white hairs) pairing... Why not...
I HATE the new X looking visor for Cyclops...
HULK in armor (JUST like Stark suggested in the AVENGERS movie...)... I just don't know what to think about it...
This whole (not so much, but just maybe a little) reboot looks SO MUCH like something to surf on the AVENGERS' movie success and, at the same time, a reaction toward DC's (at least COMMERCIALLY) successful reboot...
