Marvel CCO says new Spider-Man costume is "going to blow people away"

07.10.2015

With a SPIDER-MAN reboot comes a new Spidey costume, and Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada says he's seen the suit Tom Holland will be wearing in the solo film from director Jon Watts. IGN snagged an interview with Quesada at San Diego Comic-Con, and he told the site that he's thrilled with the design of the new costume.

It's awesome. I've seen a lot of design work that's been done on the costume. I think there are elements of it that are really going to blow people away where they are going to go 'Ah, that's Marvel doing Spider-Man.'

Quesada wouldn't say if the new suit will have web-shooters ("Things will be revealed as they are meant to be revealed.") but he did go on to say he's very happy that Sony is developing the movie with Marvel Studios.

It's Spider-Man. What's not exciting about that? I can't imagine there's a person on the planet Earth that can't relate to some aspect of Spider-Man or Peter Parker, and he is for all intents and purposes, he is Marvel's Mickey Mouse. He is the icon of so much of what we have was built upon, so to create that movie along with our Sony partners it's phenomenally exciting. I know Kevin Feige and his team have some great ideas. Some wonderful theories that we have all chimed in on.

How different do you think Tom Holland's costume will look compared to the ones worn by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in their big screen outings as the web-slinger?

SPIDER-MAN is set to open on July 28, 2017.

Translation: We need to sell more toys!

LOL yes the costume is the most important part, not the story, the acting, the effects, character development, ah got to love Hollywood. Look! its slightly different than before, I am wowed! Seriously it can't be that different or people will flip their lids. We are going with a new color scheme, burnt umber and lemon yellow, with a bit of puce, and you'll never guess where his web shoots from.

Never really been wowed by any of the costumes in the movies, to me Raimi's version had the better costume. Will have to wait & see, but will it look any different than these other versions?

Does anyone really care.

Sony should probably wait a little bit before bringing out a new spiderman movie. The fact that the box office numbers have been in steady decline for this franchise should be some indication that people are a little tired of this character.

what are you talking about? are you sure the decline is due to people's lack of interest? are you sure it's not the decline in quality/reviews/word of mouth that spurred these numbers? if you really want an indication of the level of interest, you should really look at the opening numbers only (before bad word of mouth kicks in). it goes:

Spider-Man - $114.8
Spider-Man 2 - $88.2
Spider-Man 3 - $151.1
Amazing Spider-Man - $62
Amazing Spider-Man 2 - $91

that's literally an up and down

that's literally an up and down pattern. and even the lowest opening at $62 million is still respectable. it's #115 on the all-time list, and better than these franchises that are still churning out sequels:
- Toy Story 2
- Mission Impossible 2
- 22 Jump Street
- X-Men First Class
- Rise of the Planet of the Apes
- The Hobbit
- Kung Fu Panda
- The Wolverine
- The Bourne Supremacy

It is because Sony HAS to keep doing Spider-Man movies or the rights revert back to Marvel. It is a clause that Marvel placed in nearly every movie right deal where if the property remains dormant for a certain length of time, the deal becomes void and all rights revert back to Marvel. It was essentially insurance for a studio not to pick up the rights and sit on them... it is likely why we are seeing a Fantastic 4 reboot now.

You know this is part of the MCU right? Sony has nothing to do with this. Civil war and then a spidy film within the MCU. Sony Will be doing their own thing with this character. They'll be casting their own Spider-Man or I'm assuming they are gonna go the miles morales route with it.

Rights to Spidey, X-Men and the FF should revert back to Marvel. Right now, without the FF and they're legion of characters the entire Marvel Universe is severely askew. Marvel can't use the word "Mutant" or even reflect that Quicksilver or Scarlet Witch are Magneto's children so we get this really off kilter, "wonky" situation. The "Uncanny" Inhumans? C'mon, any comic fan will tell you that there is only one "Uncanny' anything in the Marvel Universe and that's the X-Men (yeah, that's

C'mon, any comic fan will tell you that there is only one "Uncanny' anything in the Marvel Universe and that's the X-Men (yeah, that's right...they're subbing the Inhumans for the Xmen in the MCU).

They can't use Reed Richards, Susan Storm Richards, Johnny Storm, or Ben Grimm when it comes to the current MCU. They can't use the Silver Surfer, Galactus, any of the FF related villains. That means that quite possibly the #1 or #2 villain in the Marvel Uni (Doc Doom) can't be used at all. No Negative Zone references. No alien races that are part of the FF universe etc. (so we get stuck with the Chitauri instead of the Skrulls). We can have the Kree in "Guardians of the Galaxy" but no Skrulls?! C'mon! As your Uncle Ben Grimm would say, "Whata revoltin' development this is!"

On top of all that...Disney, who now owns Marvel, is having them stop production on the Fantastic Four (formerly the "Worlds' Greatest Comic Magazine") after being published since 1961 (the book that BEGAN the Marvel universe to begin with) and I'm sure will make drastic changes in the future to the comic book end of franchises they no longer own.

What we're stuck with and getting force fed is Marvel lite! My only hope and prayer is that Disney will reach down deep and buy Sony and 20th Century Fox out and reunite the Marvel universe.

If only!

Say what you will about AS2 but the costume was goddamn perfection. Sony tried to change things up with AS1 and had to go back to Ditko's original design because it just isn't something that can be improved upon.

And Marvel's involvement is no guarantee of success. Daredevil's red suit - which was also close to perfect in Affleck's movie - looked awful in the Netflix show.

Totally agree with you. Just don't see how it will blow us away and if it's the miles suit or something it'll be interesting to see the marvel fanboys reaction.

Going to blow us away? It's not like in an X-Men movie where we're finally seeing Wolverine finally wearing his costume. He's going to be 15/16 years old in this, I assume? I wouldn't be surprised if we get a costume kind of like what Daredevil starts out with on Netflix.

It'll probably be just a combination of both Raimi's version, and Webb's version. I mean, how much different can the suit look at this point? Unless they do add the web armpits or make his suit armored (which might be a bit too early to see, but who knows).

Tony stark makes him an armoured suit during the events leading to the civil war Spiderman is being introduced in that movie, why would it be to early to see him in an armoured suit in that movie?

Oh you haven't actually read any comics and you're just rehashing more informed people's comments lol.

So where is it?

Spider-man has been shitty since part 3 of Raimi's films were released. So I don't have much faith in this next reboot. So I would like to take this opportunity to quote a hit and miss comedian, Wanda Sykes. She once said, "I'll believe that shit, when I see it."

Power Ranger? The Green Goblin suit looked like a power ranger, the Spiderman suit decidedly did not.

Yeah, I don't know how you could argue that. For the record, I'm not the only one that thinks the Green Goblin outfit looks like a power ranger, but you're probably the only one who thinks the Spider-man suit did.

Yeah, I googled that just to see, and there is exactly one site on the first few pages that even sort of mentions it. The rest are referring to the Green Goblin suit.

As long as the design/color scheme remains the same as the comic, I'm all for it. I'm hoping what his comments mean is the material the suit will be made out of has an aesthetic that's more in line with the MCU.
