Marvel film updates!

10.16.2009

We've got some news on a few upcoming titles, and it's rather...well...I'll let you decide.

Lauren Shuler-Donner, producer of X-MEN gave some curious details on a few upcoming films: WOLVERINE 2, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, DEADPOOL, and MAGNETO. Here are some the highlights:

WOLVERINE 2: "That's the furthest along of all the X-Men projects on the boil. It's actually the story we wanted to use for the first Wolverine film, but [Fox head] Tom Rothman preferred to set the character up with an origin story first. We're very fortunate to have a story mostly outlined for us [from the comic book arc co-written by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller]. And we wanted an A+ writer, so we want to Chris McQuarrie (Valkyrie, The Usual Suspects). We want to make it authentic so I think it's very likely we'll be shooting in Japan. What's cool about this part of the saga is that Wolverine will be fighting in a different style to what we've seen before. Mariko's father has this stick-like weapon, so Wolverine will have to fight against that. There'll be samurai, ninja, katana blades, different forms of martial arts - mano-a-mano, extreme fighting. We're going to come up with a new style of fighting."

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS: "Harry Potter is a bit of a role model for us, absolutely. But we want it to be like the recent, darker Potters. It should not be a kiddie movie - we're in the X-Men world so you can't suddenly change the tone.Basically in each one the kids are fighting strange villains, sometimes it's aliens, sometimes it's monsters. I want to get a flavour of that world. Occasionally the kids will be in class, but more often they'll be off on adventures. Which Professor X isn't too happy about! Right now the script is not done -we're not where we want to be yet. But (screenwriter) Josh Schwartz has a great young pulse and he's doing an amazing job bringing the characters to life. We want to make this a franchise, following these kids at the school, so the casting of the child actors will be all-important."

DEADPOOL: "I want to ignore the version of Deadpool that we saw in Wolverine and just start over again. Reboot it. Because this guy talks, obviously, and to muzzle him would be insane. It's going to be a dark, snarky, very funny movie. It's the hardest story to tell, I think. There's no clear cut villain - though you do have great baddies from the comic-books like Black Tom, Slayback, Blind Al and the Weasel. There are good stories and we're figuring out which ones to incorporate. We're right in the thick of talking to writers right now, and hopefully by November we'll have decided who's going to do it. We need someone really imaginative because we want to do some really innovative, ambitious stuff. Ryan's mentioned this in an interview already but there are parts where he's going to break the fourth wall and talk directly to the audience in the cinema. We have to work out how to do that. I don't know that Fox will agree with all our decisions, but we'll see!"

MAGNETO: "David Goyer has written a brilliant script. It starts in the concentration camps and has Magneto coming out of there. But you know, I'm not sure that film is going to be made. The studio has a wealth of potential stories, and they have to stand back and decide which ones to make. And Magneto, I think, is at the back of the queue. Maybe it'll get made in five years - who knows? I can tell you that Ian McKellen won't be playing the character the whole way through. We used Lola technology in X-Men 3 to de-age Ian and Patrick for one scene, but it's very expensive. To do that for a two-hour movie would be prohibitive financially. And to find a younger actor to fill Ian's shoes, that's pretty daunting. It's not easy."

There's some decent ideas (so far) going on here. I'm still not so sure about FIRST CLASS. When I was reading it, I chuckled to myself about the POTTER comments. I'm also oddly interested in seeing Reynolds talk to the audience. So guys and gals, what's the verdict?

Extra Tidbit: What younger actor would you cast as MAGNETO? I don't find it easy to choose myself. McKellen was perfect.

It all sounds bad...

X-men first class sounds the worst. "...out on adventures"? How do you make it "darker", when the first 3 were PG, now your going to make one with kids and make it darker? "It shouldn't be a kids movie"...-Well guess what, the first three should not have been either!

Deadpool- I agree, they should disregard the one from Wolvie movie, but wasn't that the whole point in putting him in the movie, to give him a spin off? But to then say, we want to use the same guy to play him, but we want to

But to then say, we want to use the same guy to play him, but we want to reboot him, so ignore his origins from our other movie and go with this one...

I have no faith in Fox anymore...they buchered an easy score with Wolvies origins...it is already written for them, and look how that turned out!

They shouldn't do a First class, but do one with them in the future, with Bishop and Forge and an old Wolvie fighting Apoclipse. The people who write for Marvel should write an orginal movie for the X-Men not some lame writer who doesn't know shit about comics. Worst come to worst, have Pixar do a cartoon version of the Civil War or the one where they are all Zombies!

Wolverine 2 sounds like it is the only one with any potential. Might as well not get your hopes up...Marvel has proven that they will fuck it up for sure.

Not one sounds good

I don't know if I would see any of these movies least of all the X Men: First Class movie. Wolverine Origins was sooo terrible and over the top. They disappointed me because there is so much material out there in the marvel world to work with and that was the story they chose. FOX doesn't make the best Action/Thriller movies at least not like they used too. They should lay off comic book movies and find different stories to tell in unique and interesting ways.

HP a role model? WTF?????

that statement made me very uneasy with all of this, since when is HP role model for anyone? i just know they´re going to "screw the pooch" on these films, but hey, FOX knows best, right? HAHAHAHA

regarding a new magneto, i really can´t tell, Ian McKellen was just all around perfect in his performance as magneto, so, surprise me FOX...

This is the sort of statement that makes me very worried. I've said it many times before, but fuck Fox, and fuck Tom Rothman. It sounds like he's mostly to blame for the Wolverine debacle. Honestly, can anyone tell me when studio meddling was for the better?

Yes, Hayden

Fox owes Hayden: the script for Clone Wars was so bad that it almost ruined his career and if he never gets handed a decent script then it'll be all over for him. If the script for Magneto is as good as they say then by all means give it to him.

Sorry to tell this guys

But all these projects aren't interesting to me, I have a feel that all them are gonna end the same stuff like Wolverine. I keep waiting for a kinda Nolan guy that really understands this characters and stop toying with them. Come on! X-men are cool, why don't they get cool enough movies!

Get It Done

Seems to me like that Magneto story is dying to be told. From the first scene in X1 to the modern day, there's a lot to tell. Fighting Nazis, meeting Xavier and building Cerebro and the school. If I was Fox, I'd get on that one at the same time that I develop Wolverine 2.

Hayden Christiansen

I think Hayden Christiansen could play the young Magneto. Seriously, he's a competent actor, he looks the part and he's played similar roles already (Aniken Skywalker and the guy in Jumper).

Ben Whishaw as young Magnus

He was amazing in Perfume...not sure if his voice is as good as McKellen's, but he is just as strong an actor. If Fox wasn't involved all this would sound very good.

Is this the future of X-Men? Prequels and spin-offs? Doesn't seem that progressive at all.

I agree about casting a young actor to play Magneto. That's gonna be a tough one. Remember when they casted a young actor to play Hannibal Lecter? And that movie was a disaster. Maybe it's just me but Magneto as a stand-alone character might not work.

Honor!

Honor will be the Wolverine movie we all expect, I believe Shuler-Donner when she said that FOX want the origin movie first. As long as Hugh can play Wolvie I'm in! Magneto could be something good. The other two are your problem folks!

WOLVERINE 2: I'm trying to remain hopeful because Christopher McQuarrie is writing, but memories of them butchering what was supposedly an awesome Wolverine script still haunt me. Wolverine has one of the best origin stories ever written; it could have been such an amazing movie but that idiot Tom Rothman had to have his say. Like I said, trying to be optimistic, but we'll see.

FIRST CLASS: I wish I was the person who gets to decide whether to greenlight this, because I would take my permanent marker and write a big fat NO on the screenplay. And didn't they already make this movie? Let's see, a school for super-powered kids who get into a bunch of shenanigans; oh yeah, it was called Sky High.

DEADPOOL: I'd really like to see this one. I was never a hardcore Deadpool fan, but I enjoyed Reynolds' performance immensely (you know, the little of it there was) and would like to see more.

MAGNETO: It's a shame this is at the back of the queue, because this is the one I want to see the most. He's not younger in the sense that they're probably thinking, but I always thought Ralph Fiennes would make a great Magneto.

In the end though, I think the comment that sums up how all this will turn out is this: "I don't know that Fox will agree with all our decisions, but we'll see!"

God I wish Marvel got their rights to X-Men back!

There have been too many terrible X-men movies to ever wash the bad taste out of my mouth. (X2 was decent)

They need to wait ten years and just start over completely. Recast everyone and pretend the other films never existed.

But seriously, how do you botch an X-Men movie? Who the hell is in charge at these studios?

Hey, this isn't Marvel film news...this is X-Men film news! BOOOOOO!

Seriously does this producer have any idea what she's talking about? It sounds like a little kid describing all of their favorite Pokemon cards.

Yeah, I was wondering if anyone else would realize that she was a little off. She had some odd statements about Reynolds playing both Deadpool and Green Lantern that I didn't include because they were incredibly dumb. And X-Men is a bit more appropriate.

I really don't think that I care for any of these films or the way that they'll be handled. It's tough to retread these character after their origins have been established on-screen so recently. ESPECIALLY the first class thing, that sounds like a bomb. Poop, I say. Poop.
