Marvel gathers writers

03.26.2009

It looks like Marvel really is serious about building their catalog of characters into a whole mini movie universe. Or at least the ones they still have the movie rights to (so, a universe devoid of Spidey, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Ghost Rider or X-Men).

Rather than putting a hot writer on each upcoming movie project one at a time, they're taking a heavy dose of Pym particles and going macro -- the studio is assembling a "fellowship" of writers to convene and expand pitches from the company into stories and scripts worthy of feature treatment. Writers assemble!

The studio is currently on the hunt for interested parties. Naturally, these writers won't be working on the projects already in the pipe (THOR, AVENGERS, CAPTAIN AMERICA) -- this gathering will assist Marvel in envisioning creative ways to launch second- and third-string properties like Black Panther, Cable, Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, Nighthawk and Vision.

Extra Tidbit: Nighthawk? These guys are gonna have their work cut out for them...

I'd love to see the Kingdom Come arc made into some live action action!

Furthermore about Marvel characters going to TV...

I still don't think they should give up on Blade. Here's the how and why:

-Blade:Trinity AND The Series flat-out sucked. Nobody needs an explanation for Trinity, but with all due respect to Sticky Fingaz, he was smacked around like a bitch on that show by some weak-ass villains. Add to that the writing didn't get any good until the show was close to cancellation. Blade is too great a character to just leave it at that.

-I say forget restarting it at Spike and move it to a channel that's

-I say forget restarting it at Spike and move it to a channel that's up and coming as far as their programming goes: BET. They only have one other original series on their schedule and this could really broaden their audience and attract new viewers.

-Next thing...get rid of Goyer. This is a must. Why? Please refer to my first point up above. Don't get me wrong, his work with the Nolans on TDK was OUTSTANDING. But in relation to Blade, the guy's had it and needs to be put out to pasture.

-Now, by now I'm sure you're all thinking, "Ok, EBastard, if you were responsible for re-booting Blade on TV, WITHOUT Goyer, AND promised a fresh take on The Daywalker not covered in the films or series, HOW WOULD YOU DO IT?!" The answer is simple: We concentrate on Eric. Not Blade, not The Daywalker, but ERIC. The young man before he became the warrior. I picture him in his late teens possibly early twenties dealing with the day-to-day struggles with the thirst, struggling with his humanity and powers as a vampire, inhabiting both those worlds, all the while being aided by Jamal Afari (not Goyer's Whistler), who teaches him how to live and eventually...how to fight...as The Daywalker that he is destined to become.

I dunno...it's just an idea. :D

Moon Knight would be damned cool. Not only is he damaged, but he's a real asshole, kinda like me. Cloak and Dagger would also be sweet; back in the day that was some pretty cutting edge stuff. Still the all time best would be MARVEL FUCKING ZOMBIES!!! Nothing beats Zombie Hulk using the Necrnomicon as toilet paper!

Some of these second and third tier characters could actually make movies that trump the more popular characters.

I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out really cool in the long run.

Bring it on!

I def like this direction considering the crap that's being put out by Holly Wood right now. The last couple of comic book movies have kicked a$$. Def need to get Black Panther on track w/ Djimon Hounsou. Moon Knight would rock as well. The Iron Fist movie def. Let's get this sh** poppin' already. Need to get back to enjoying movies for the entertainment value. I love a good heart piece movie, but damn it's too depressing now. We need some action for distraction.

Marvel has already used all of their first string characters, and a decent bit of their second string characters already. I wonder how third string stand alone characters will work? Will people really pay to see a stand alone Vision movie? Hell, will people really pay money to see a Deathlock, Slapstick, Scarlet Spider, Silver Sable, or a Nighthawk movie?

The only Marvel characters that I can see working in stand alone movies are Black Panther, Moon Knight, Dr. Strange, and maybe Iron Fist.

Cloak and Dagger is ripe for a filmic treatment, if done right. Barring that, a Sienkiewicz flavored Moon Knight movie would make me very very happy.

I remember hearing years ago about an IRON FIST movie with Ray Park in the lead. Maybe that'll finally happen now.

Reboot...

They should make a movie based on the series 'The Tomb of Dracula'...perhaps reboot Blade with this. Also...what about MoonKnight...just a thought.

Sweet

This seems cool, hopefully it actually turns out some pretty good movies. And they ned to hurry up and get the rights back to Spidey and Xmen i mean a universe with out them just isnt a marvel universe. The other characters seem easy to get back. Not like those movies were exactly blockbusters.

Oh man

This is awesome. On a side note, they really need to get all those rights back. Pronto. I'd like to see a Daredevil movie that actually does the comic justice. Wasn't the lead's fault, that script fucking sucked. And give Gaiman Doc Strange. He'd know what to do with that.

POWER PACK!!

A Power Pack movie could be fookin brilliant if done like a modern day Goonies/Explorers type thing. It needs the right amount of adventure, humour and darkness. In fact, get Speilberg or one of his padawans to direct and i'll be happy.

PS: I'd also be up for a well-done Dr Strange movie.

I'd pay good money to see a well-done Dr. Strange movie! I like the idea of this...it may bring consistency to the Marvel movie universe.

I'm with EBastard though...if not a movie, I'd watch the TV show.

Just for kicks, how about a Dr. Strange, Dr. Who crossover?

SOME of that list of projects sounds promising...

but am I the only one that thinks Doctor Strange just SCREAMS "Sci-Fi Channel Original Series" in this day and age?

Black Panther, Cable, Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, Nighthawk and Vision: all perhaps workable in movie worlds if Marvel doesn't expect them all to be big blockbusters.

I'm holding out for Darkhawk, Cloak & Dagger & Power Pack movies.

I think if they do this right (and people don't get upset over them changing actors every so many movies ala Bond) this could be a very cool thing to do in movies.
