Marvel joins with Netflix for new TV shows featuring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage!

2 years agoby:

So, this is kind of awesome.

Marvel has partnered with internet steaming service Netflix to create all-new, original shows based on four of their more popular characters: Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones. But, that's not all. Apparently, the four shows, which will start out with a 13-episide run each, will culminate in a mini-series of The Defenders, of which all characters will be involved. Seeing as the Marvel Cinematic Universe is already connected to the small screen with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it would seem that these shows would also tie into it, making for one hell of a crossover.

Here's the full press release:

Burbank, Calif. – November 7, 2013 – The Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) and Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) today announced an unprecedented deal for Marvel TV to bring multiple original series of live-action adventures of four of Marvel’s most popular characters exclusively to the world’s leading internet TV Network beginning in 2015. This pioneering agreement calls for Marvel to develop four serialised programmes leading to a miniseries programming event.

Led by a series focused on “Daredevil” followed by “Jessica Jones”, “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage”, the epic will unfold over multiple years of original programming, taking Netflix members deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York.  Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen-episode series and a culminating Marvel’s “The Defenders” mini-series event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.

Produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Television Studios, this groundbreaking deal is Marvel’s most ambitious foray yet into live-action TV storytelling.

“This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel's brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty,” said Alan Fine, President of Marvel Entertainment. “This serialised epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.”

“Marvel’s movies, such as ‘Iron Man’ and Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’, are huge favourites on our service around the world. Like Disney, Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos.  “With ‘House of Cards’ and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and we’re thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude.”

This new original TV deal follows last year’s landmark film distribution deal through which, beginning with 2016 theatrically released feature films, Netflix will be the exclusive U.S. subscription television service for first-run, live-action and animated movies from the Walt Disney Studios, including titles from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Disneynature and Lucasfilm.  Netflix members can currently enjoy a wide range of Disney, ABC TV and Disney Channel films and shows across the 41 countries where Netflix operates.

I think this is a great idea. It gives this "street-level" heroes a place to grow and in a venue at the height of its popularity. After the news of Blockbuster Video closing its doors permanently, the next evolution of home entertainment is here, and the clear winner is streaming services with Netflix leading the charge. Marvel has made a wise choice and I think this will further strengthen the output of Marvel's large stable of characters, especially for those who would benefit from more than a two-hour movie. No word on whether these will be "binge" shows or serialized, but no matter what, this is some next level shit. I can't wait to see this unfold.

Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist will begin their rollout on Netflix sometime in 2015.

Extra Tidbit: What other Marvel characters do you think are ripe for a show on Netflix? For me, the obvious answer is The Punisher, but I'm sure there are others out there you'd like to see...

Now that I think about it DD probably would make a better show than it would a movie because of the lawyer aspect so this is a good call. Iron Fist could be very cool if it's set in K'un Lun. Honestly I think the Jessica Jones one interests me the most. I thought Alias was Bendis' best stuff. The Purple Man would be tits.

In the comics...

the Defenders were the Hulk, Namor, Doctor Strange and the Silver Surfer. Marvel can't do the Defenders because the Silver Surfer (and possibly Namor) is lisenced by Fox. But Marvel still has rights to the name "Defenders". Expect Misty Knight Colleen Wing and perhaps Cloak and Dagger and Moonknight to make appearances.

I'm pretty sure they are using it just because it a) sounds better than Heroes for Hire and b) offers a sharp contrast contextually to the word/name Avengers.

If they want to continue...

Blade, Ghost Rider, Hannibal King, Abigail Whistler and the Nightstalkers. Shang Chi, Captain Britain, Spiderwoman, Union Jack and SHIELD UK.

I know this will not happen, but on top of being a great news on it's own, I think it would be even greater if were to take place in the late 70s/early 80s Hell’s Kitchen.

Punisher

This is awesome news. The only part missing is Frank Castle. Maybe Misty Knight, if only because she dates Danny Rand in the comics. Either way, this is great.

Cautiously Optimistic...

I think this is great way to handle these characters instead of giving them all movies...

I am particularly looking forward to seeing how Luke Cage is portrayed as he is me favorite character in the Marvel Universe...

I like the plan, now I wanna see the execution...

Awesome. Take that DC and CW. Now they can make these characters a bit grittier like they need to be, but also not worry so much about ratings like they would on network tv and their movies. This can be a lot more just for the fans.

How marvel will rule tv

First off marvel is doing things right. Dc who I love take notes. If I was on the marvel brain trust I would suggest they start there own channel/network for all things marvel. Cartoons and animated features during the day , evenings prime time tv series shows with popular characters sprinkled in with feature films, late night adults only punisher, wolverine, daredevil, ghost rider type darker toned characters with blood and violence with adult content themes. It would be huge and appease all

This is great, fantastic, amazing news as long as they deliver a quality product.

I.E. these shows turn out to be nothing remotely like "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." and they at least have some sort of crossover with the cinematic universe.

But will it somehow tie into the Avenger's films?

also, where is Peggy Carter? is she getting an ABC show or is that left on the producer's floor?

Peggy Carter would probably be an Agents of SHIELD spin off. They can do an episode in which the Agents are investigating something and there is a flashback to the 50s. CSI New York did an episode like that except it wasn't intended as a pilot (as far as I know).

I hope that when these are released they are well received. I would love to see them do a Punisher series for netflix. It would be awesome because they wouldn't have to worry about censoring him or alienating any part of the audience

This is great news and probably the best way to expand their cinematic universe to include these types of characters. Dealing with the street level crime may have been too difficult to include in the movies, but it will be right at home in a TV setting. I wonder if this will connect in any way to Agents of SHIELD (b/c that show could use a boost) or if there will be references to these characters in the movies. So many possibilities!!!!

Iko Uwais for Iron Fist!

After seeing him in action in The Raid, I think he would be INCREDIBLE!

(note: I know he's not the same ethnicity... but... but.. The Raid!.. Yeah, I'm obsessed.)

Nice

This really is the way to go if they want to push their lesser know/popular characters. And who knows, they might even be able to get a movie or two out of them as well if the shows do well enough.

Proud Netflix customer

Sure Netflix has thousands of terrible movies that I just browse over again and again, but they also have incredible content that have helped me catch up on shows I missed (Lost, Breaking Bad, Sherlock), as well as introduced me to some new stories I never thought I'd love (House of Cards, Orange is the New Black). I look forward to this new partnership between these two giants, and similar to the silver screen, it looks like Marvel is also doing a cinematic tv universe.

S.H.I.E.L.D

So I guess that means none of these characters will show up on the S.H.I.E.L.D series... FAIL! (But good at the same time because that show is terrible)

As a DC fan, it's infuriating how on top of things the folks at Marvel are, but infuriating in a good way. If this comes to fruition, it'll be all kinds of awesome.

Wow. So mixed on this. I would love to see lesser characters in a show, but I SO wanted Daredevil & the Heroes for Hire guys in feature films! Maybe they could cast big enough so the same actors could still eventually play the characters on the big screen.

This I'm excited for. The shows could get campy and cheesy if not done right but lets hope Marvel knows what its doing and dont follow with what they've done with the S.H.I.E.L.D show.

It is a good time to be a subscriber to Netflix. And for only 8 bucks a month the amount of the ever grow content is very cheap.

But most of all I would like to see them have a Punisher show. Unrated and full of over the top blood and guts just like the Punisher should be.

I would rather see Daredevil get his own big feature film again instead of a television show along with Punisher and Blade and all of those films could lead up to one big Marvel Knights film.

For f**ks sake...give WB's some hope that one day they'll catch up! Seriously... awesome ...awesome news. I was clearly born at the right time...wise enough to appreciate just what the hell is going on in a world of where the comic books that I used to read are now being played out in live action format!

Holy fuckballs that's awesome. If these are successful it will open a lot of doors for a lot of other characters that deserve to be seen. Plus since there is no restriction these can get real dark if needed.
