Marvel sets Guardians of the Galaxy and Pixar scribes to pen Captain Marvel

04.20.2015

As the search continues for a star and director to helm CAPTAIN MARVEL, the studio has selected a pair of writers to shepherd the female superhero film to the big screen. Looks like the rumors have panned out with the formal announcement that Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve will script the Carol Danvers origin story.

Perlman is best known for co-writing GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and the upcoming sequel alongside James Gunn. She has also been linked with a solo film for Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow but that has yet to be formally announced. LeFauve wrote Pixar's upcoming INSIDE OUT which has already garnered buzz for it's originality and return to form for the animation studio.

Both women co-wrote those respective films with others so joining them together to script CAPTAIN MARVEL should benefit everyone in the end. While I don't think it is necessary to make the writer and director of a female-centric film also female, it definitely helps to have someone familiar with the talent involved. Marvel has a lot riding on CAPTAIN MARVEL to be a hit since it will set the precedent for female-led superhero movies, but I think it will really rest on the star and director to bring this all together.

CAPTAIN MARVEL is set to hit theaters on November 2, 2018.

Who cares about their gender?

The important part is that Pixar and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY writers are working on CAPTAIN MARVEL. GOTG was brilliant and INSIDE OUT looks great; it seems like Marvel is continuing to do the right thing

While I can't wait for this movie, the character is awesome, I just shake my head that both this and Wonder Woman are trying to make a point to have all females behind the scenes (director writer etc). It seems like a gimmick, to say look at us we're progressive!!!. As if having a male anywhere within the production of the movie would taint it. These lady's have been involved in some great movies and I don't doubt their talent. They've written and directed great male and female characters. But

But it just makes laugh that there seems to be an edict that only women could bring these female superheroes to real fruition. I don't care if its male or female behind the scenes as long as I get a great movie with characters I love.

It is pretty much impossible for a man to write a female character that isn't, literally, a male fantasy of a woman.

Wopolopolus, agreed. Like having Angelina Jolie, who I think is not a good director, helming WonderWoman? It would be cool, granted, to have female talent behind a female superheroine, but to go for gender before talent or aptness is nuts.
Martinphipps, a female writer for a female tale is a plus. But its not like no male writer has written realistic female characters. Unless you're thinking about fan-fiction maybe.

@Martinphipps that is the most myopic point of view I've ever heard. So no male in the history of film or any other medium has ever written a female character of any worth? Thats just as sexist as saying no female can ever write a male character of any worth. If I came out and said no female should ever be charged with writing any male character would it come off as sexist? Would the pc police come and lynch me? We both know the answer is yes. The fact is a good writer can write anything. While

While a woman and man obviously can pull from different experiences living life as opposite genders, it doesn't mean someone is incapable of writing for the other sex. Whedon does a damn fine job with women characters, making them layered and deep. I'd say one of the women above did a damn fine job writing male characters in GotG.

@aerketype thats my point really. Why not give it to someone with a vision, if that happens to be a woman I could care less, it just seems like they are forcing women into the role just to say they have women in charge of portraying women. The Wonder Woman thing with Jolie is the prime example. She's nothing special behind the camera. There are a lot of women that would be better suited for the role, and frankly a lot of men. The women listed here I have no problem with they are talented. If the director they find for this picture is a woman with a real vision that is great. If it comes out though that Marvel is looking for only a woman, or women are the only ones listed and mentioned, as I said it will feel like a gimmick only so they can say they respect diversity. I don't want quality to suffer because their field of view narrows to match what they think is the buzzwords of the day.

Wonder Woman is scheduled to come out before this. Wouldn't that be the film setting a precedent?

Or have we just written off DC movies entirely now? I know after MoS and Green Lantern I about have.

Completely agree unfortunately. It's possible DC could right the ship, but it's a tall task at this point

Unfortunately there are still DCU fanboys all over this site. I don't think GL is canon at this point, but MoS was awful.

While I respect that you are entitled to your own opinion. I'm gonna have to ask you to respect my opinion that I thinks you're bananas for considering MoS to be a negative entry into DC's universe. MoS was sick, the movie I've been waiting for, and I couldn't be more excited for the rest of whatever's up their sleeve!
Also, GL certainly had its issues, but I really don't get the hatred for that movie. Yes they made the same mistake FF2 made, making the big bad guy a big cloud of pollution :/

I would love if they left that in the canon, it had a ton of potential!
