Marvel shifts Edgar Wright's Ant-Man from fall to summer 2015!

Sep. 9, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Well now, it looks like those eagerly anticipating the debut of director Edgar Wright's ANT-MAN have just shortened their wait as Disney has shifted the release date for the Marvel Phase 3 film. Originally set to debut on November 6, 2015, the film will now crawl onto screens with a late summer release of July 31, 2015. So, what does this mean for the rest of the Phase 3 films? Currently, Marvel has held off on announcing any titles with no intention of releaseing that information until 2014. However, a four month shift could potentially mean that they're looking to fit in another pic.

The Phase 3 slate kicks off with ANT-MAN with only the release dates for the follow-ons confirmed: May 6, 2-16, July 8, 2016, and May 5, 2017. Now, I'd put all my chips on the last date being THE AVENGERS 3, but it's anyone's guess as to what the other two entries are (with speculation being that it could be DOCTOR STRANGE and BLACK PANTHER). However, the gap in time between ANT-MAN and that mystery project in May of 2016 leaves almost a full year between projects (which was about the same between THE AVENGERS and IRON MAN 3). Could Marvel be about to add another pic in the mix, perhaps one with a leading lady?

It's anyone's guess at this point (will, minus those in the brain trust that KNOW). Either way, a scheduling move for Phase 3 could mean big things, especially with all the chatter leading up to it, including actor Vin Diesel's tease and even Katee Sackhoff's "talk" with the studio.

Marvel's next entry to hit the big screens is Phase 2's THOR: THE DARK WORLD, which brings the thunder on November 8, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Oh yeah, this puts it two weeks after Superman/Batman. Is this a Hollywood version of chicken?

Yes!

I love Scott Pilgrim, I loved Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and have just started watching Spaced. I can't wait to see The Worlds End. I love Edgar Wright and am so excited he is going to be directing a Marvel movie. I feel like Marvel making all the right choices with directors like James Gunn and Edgar Wright. Can't wait to see how these movies turn out.

Shows some degree of confidence in the finished product to make this a Summer blockbuster.
I know Edgar Wright's been planning this for a while already but with no cast announced yet (unless I missed that one) I guess Marvel/Disney mostly have faith in the director.

Consider how well The World's End is performing in limited release and the positive reception, it seems that faith is warranted.

Plus, he already has a script, so I might have already done some preproduction work. Casting won't take very long.

Ant-Man being released months before the previous release date? Hey, I'm not complaining!

Its been discussed that Ant-Man is more of a feature-length one-shot, e.g. it doesn't correspond directly with the other Avengers films. Its possible that Phase 3 will start with what comes out in 2016, and Ant-Man will be an in-between release more than anything.

I could see them going with Black Panther first, especially if Chiwetel Ejiofor kills it at awards time with 12 Years A Slave.

Not going to lie, way more excited for this than Batman/Superman. We've seen them already. There's 14-16 theatrical movies with those characters already. I'm excited for these - literal - little guys that haven't been given their due.

*Cough Star Wars

Seems like a fitting shift and it makes sense to introduce Ant-Man (although I know he won''t Ultron) shortly after The Avengers.

no date for Avengers 3

Marvel had 5 movies leading into "The Avengers" and have 4 movies leading into "Avengers 2". I dont think phase three will only have 3 movies before "Avengers 3". Also, A3 would only be 2 years after A2. it's 3 years between A1 and A2. So i dont think they've inadvertently released the date for Avengers 3 yet.

Not to mention phase 4 and 5 (this could go on forever)
