Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige gives us an update on Phase 3 plans for Dr. Strange and Hulk

05.06.2013by:

Thor and Dr. Strange

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has been incredibly open with his interview with EW and Comic Book Movie has the last of his talks with the magazine.

With Phase 2 kicking off in a big way (and I do mean big) with IRON MAN 3, everyone wants to know what the plans are for Phase 3. There have been some rumors and speculations but Feige says that while there are some ideas so far, nothing is set in place yet for Phase 3. One of those rumors has been about Dr. Strange and Kevin Feige is still interested in bringing the Sorcerer Supreme to the big screen:

Within the next year or so we'll really start the advanced planning on post - Avengers 2, and I would love Strange to be a part of that. There's a whole supernatural/magic dimension going on in Marvel comics that we haven't ever touched on.

While THOR got around some of the mystical elements by explaining it as advanced alien technology, you just can't take the magic away from Dr. Strange and I'm glad Marvel agrees. The supernatural element in Marvel comics that Feige mentions really hasn't been explored in the films yet and those elements would be an interesting addition to Marvel's cinematic world.

Kevin Feige was also asked if a solo Hulk movie could be a part of Phase 3:

There's no script in the works or anything, but we are talking about it. All the Hulk energy right now is on Avengers 2, but Mark Ruffalo is signed up [for more films]. What we're excited about exploring and expanding is Mark - and Bruce Banner is not in Planet Hulk at all. The fun of Hulk is his interaction with humans.

As exciting as it was to see "Hulk Smash" in THE AVENGERS I think most people agree that it was Mark Ruffalo's portrayal of Bruce Banner that was almost more memorable. Marvel knows that too and I think that's also part of the reason why we aren't going to get a Planet Hulk movie.

Phase 2 has begun and next up is THOR: THE DARK WORLD on November 8th, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: What do you want to see more: a new solo Hulk film or a Dr. Strange film?

benedict cumberbatch for Strange, cary hiroyuki tagawa as the REAL mandarin,
ryan renolds as deadpool, dominic Purcell as taskmaster
Wentworth miller as marc spector/moon knight, matthew mconaughey as johnny blaze...
and that's just off the top of my squash.

If Feige wants to give WB/DC crap about trusting the source material...

Then he needs to read up on about 2 decades of recent Hulk comics, where he is talking!!!

When do they start the team-ups?

Exploring a character like Dr. Strange and Ant Man would be interesting, mainly because they've got so much to offer. But at some point they going to get into less valuable, less interesting characters who only work better as part of a team. And on top of that, many of their big characters like Iron Man are going to run out of new things to do on their own. So I'm wondering when we're going to start seeing film titles that have big "&" symbols in the middle of them. Phase 3? Or the next

There's some freaky, super trippy stuff going on with Doc Strange. Who wouldn't want to see a fun action flick with bad guys with names like Dormammu, Nightmare, and Shuma-Gorath?

Movie fan vs. Comic readers

I have never ever read a Hulk comic; but from the track record it looks like getting a 'Hulk' movie to work is a tricky thing. I would say putting another solo try for 'the other guy' on the back burner might be a good choice for now.

No Planet Hulk?

I'm kinda glad to hear this. His interaction with humans is the strong suit of the Hulk, imo.

The Other Guy

There is a danger of giving Hulk another Solo without a supporting character. If you look at the direction of Phase II sequels they seem to focus on love-demons-destiny. Stark had to deal with protecting the one thing he cannot live without, his panic at his own weakness in the wake of NY, and the one thing that no one can take away ... that he is Iron Man. Mr. Odinson looks to want to reclaim the love he found, deal with his new charge of protecting humanity and the realms, and possibly having to put Midgaard before Asgaard at the sacrifice of Loki and others. Mr. Roger's first love died while he was asleep, but has a daughter, he lost everything and became a man out of time, Bucky his greatest regret will come to a resolution and he will realize that he was destined to stop the rising evil of this new century.
So Banner ... Love (Betty Ross)-Demons (Other Guy)-Destiny (Hulk is necessary). I do not really want to see a third Betty, so let's laterally bring in her college roommate and friend Janet Van Dyne (Wasp) who after learning of Banner's re-engaging the world contacts him for expertise on radiation exposure in Africa on local biology. The region is on the fringes of Wakanda with an epicenter at a recently discovered mine. Mutate Janet to have a stinger ... induces Hulk ... triggers advanced military response by T'Chala ... history/plot (AIM/Masters of Evil overlap) ... climax to Hulk needing to absorb an altered Vibranium explosion ... Janet seeks former boyfriend (Pym) to stabilize mutation, T'Challa seeks to open trade with the world, Banner invites Betty to dinner. Post Credits -Maria Hill contacts T'Challa about Wakanda consulting on alien tech.

It's a shame about Planet Hulk because that most likely means no World War Hulk, which I would love to see. But more Hulk movies would be good. I did like Mark as Bruce, but I do think that there needs to be more time with him as Hulk as well.

How about...

I reckon, there'll be 5 'solo' films in Phase 3.

Ant-Man is hitting in late 2015, so we'll then have 2 films in 2016, 2 more in 2017 with Avengers 3 hitting in the first half of 2018

I'm going to make the assumption there'll be plans on Thor 3 and Captain America 3 - so that leaves two 'solo' slots. That said, I can't believe they're not hoping for a Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 either... so that's just one vacancy....

So how about a team-up film? After two not-so-incredible Hulk films

My call - either pair him up with Doctor Strange (I don't know if that would be a natural fit or not) OR.... pair him up with Captain America and let the Doc have a solo film?

There shouldn't be a race to whack out as many new heroes as possible, feed them in as the established characters drop away. Iron Man *probably* has seen his last solo outing... that'll happen to Thor and the Cap too... Leave the likes of Black Panther etc for when that happens...

i think black panther and miss marvel should be considered for phase 3, as they both appeal to untapped demographics in the marvel universe.

I'd be more excited to see Dr. Strange

My personal list of the top 5 characters I'd want to see Marvel do solo films on (not necessarily the top 5 that I think they'll actually do):

1. Ant- Man
2. Dr. Strange
3. Daredevil
4. Iron Fist
5. Darkhawk

Dr. Strange is something I'm greatly anticipating. However, Hulk needs another go--especially with Ruffalo who is easily the best of the three who have played Banner.

I would be excited for both. They're both great characters who deserve their own great films in the Marvel Universe. I would love to see what Marvel could do with a Doctor Strange film and how they handle all of the magic and supernatural elements.

I watched Shoot Em' Up again last night and I couldn't stop thinking about how great Clive Owen would be for Doctor Strange. Just add some gray hair to him and he would be perfect.

Wait: so does Doctor Strange have only one expression that he uses all the time? Because I don't think Clive Owen knows any others then the one he shows in every scene he has ever done.

I would have rather have seen Norton play the type of Banner that Ruffalo played... Not looking for a cure, but rather just taming the beast within.

Norton did a great job and I was really disappointed when he decided not to return for The Avengers. But having Ruffalo come in and do a great job too takes some of the disappoint away.

I don't know who's better. They both made the character theirs in their own way.

I'd rather a Doctor Strange movie but that doesnt mean i wouldnt be excited for the Hulk.

I'm just hoping they step up their diversity with their solo films. How about a solo film for Black Panther, Ms. Marvel, or Luke Cage. I'd even like to see Black Widow or War Machine getting their own films

You want diversity but want a War machine or Widow film? War machine would not be much different that IM and the Widow is blandly written and boring to watch. She is also in everything else, why have a solo film for her?

i mean diversity in that all the movies so far have been white men. Yeah there is Nick Fury and Black Widow but they were always side characters. I want to see marvel take a real chance on a female superhero solo film. We have never gotten a good female hero movie (Electra, Catwoman, Supergirl). And it's been a while since Blade 2, we could use a good black superhero movie.

Plus a War Machine movie would be very different than an Iron Man movie, if done right. Iron Man is about Stark

Plus a War Machine movie would be very different than an Iron Man movie, if done right. Iron Man is about Stark struggling with his own ego. War Machine would be more about being a hired gun doing the governments bidding. A little was touched upon in Iron Man 3 and i expect a similar theme in Captain America 2, but this could be a good compromise for no more solo Iron Man movies. Stark would be the side character for a Rhodes film.

Dr. Strange could make for a great movie. I rewatched Thor again this weekend and thought it wasn't nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I don't think it's the strongest addition to the MCU, but it's a great movie and does a great job of translating the Thor comics into the MCU. I think the same could be done with Dr. Strange and the "magic" element of his comics. Just have it as something no one ever really knew about, but after what's been happening in Phase 1 and Phase 2, now

That way they can hopefully work in Iron Fist into Phase 3, and also a Luke Cage movie. Than post Avengers 3, we can get a Heroes for Hire flick.

"There's a whole supernatural/magic dimension going on in Marvel comics that we haven't ever touched on." Would have been nice if they would have come to that realization when they were drawing up Mandarin and his rings for Iron Man 3. Either way, I love Ruffalo as the Hulk and will be happy to see him in Avengers 2 and his own movies.

I'm sure they did come to that realization even before Iron Man 3, that just isn't how they wanted to play the Mandarin.

Stranger things have happened in movies. Maybe Loki can return as the villain in an Avengers movie and Ben Kingsley's Trevor can return as a henchmen who he's given actual magic rings. That would be hilarious!

I want Dr. Strange to happen too because I don't know much about the character. But I'd rather see a Hulk movie. There are few things in life I enjoy more than the Hulk smashing.
