Marvel working with ABC to develop a TV series set in the universe of The Avengers

Jul. 31, 2012by: Alejandro Stepenberg

The Avengers assembled

Before you get too worried - Marvel isn't looking to let loose another "Heroes" on the world (though if they tried I think they'd have a much better idea of what they were doing).  Should an AVENGERS-related television show ever come to pass, it would be something much more grounded than men and women in tights and armor gallivanting about.

So what would it be then? Well, that isn't known yet.  As for what it might be: "The connection to the Avengers franchise would be light as the project is expected to be set in the universe and feature some of its themes and feel, but may not include any characters from Joss Whedon’s blockbuster... the project is in a nascent stage, described as 'a kernel of an idea,' with a number of scenarios being explored, including a high-concept cop show."

Perhaps this could be Marvel's way of giving us the further adventures of SHIELD? Or maybe even the past adventures of SHIELD, thereby circumventing the need to bring in someone of Samuel L. Jackson's stature on anything more than an occasional basis?

To be honest, what I'm really trying to say here is... I've got a fever, and the only cure is more Clark Gregg.

But maybe that's just me - what would you want out of a television series inspired by the greater AVENGERS universe?

Extra Tidbit: The report that brought his news also mentions that there is a Hulk series currently/still being kicked around (I think we've mentioned it before on this site), with Marvel looking for a new writer to realize what they're thinking.

Heroes for Hire?

Iron Fist and Luke Cage could be a good tv series. You wouldn't need a lot of CG for them just some good buddy cop style action. It gives you a lot of room for crossovers or cameos. You could Also go spy drama and go with Spider women and shield or sword, have them battling modern day Hydra or aim, which also opens doors.

Daredevil

Obviously not a chance here but he's a character that I think would work great on TV. Part court room drama, part action. Law and Order: Blind Justice, lol.

Not sure about this show, but Season 1 of Heroes was some of the best tv ever.

I actually liked Heroes, although only Seasons 1 and 2 were good.

Damage Control!

I would love to see a Damage Control tv show. It would show the aftermath of fights and adventures, and just giving us a peak at what the avengers are up to.

Phil Caulson: Agent of Shield

Get Cobie Smulders back as Maria Hill (she's a TV regular), give them a subsidiary team of lesser Avengers to use after the success of the original team.

Book.That.Shit!

Great idea - an entire series of "lower deck episodes" - except the SHIELD lower deck can be just as exciting as the core team!

No, it's not a good idea. Basically the problem is that any villian they would face would necessarily not be too much of a threat or they would bring in the Avengers. Besides, did you see the movie? Phil Coulson would be... unavailable.

I'm not totally opposed to a comedy "Great Lakes Avengers" if only to see Squirrel Girl.

But honestly - New Warriors would be interesting especially if they used the Civil War as the backdrop.

ITEM 47 The Series

It's probably linked to the short in the bonus of the AVENGERS' BR, with a couple of civilians getting their hands on a Chitaury weapon, after the big fight in NY : ITEM 47

Or, a S.H.I.E.L.D. series which seems like a more obvious choice. And get Michael Chiklis to play one of the main agents (a bad ass one). One of Fury's right hand man.

Frontline

Marvel had/das the 'Frontline' book, which is basically a new start up newspaper (rival to the daily bugle) that reports on the world and superheroes. I think that could be a fantastic show. You wouldn't have to have the heroes, or the actions, but it would be reporters visiting sites of battles, etc. covering the heroes actions and influences on the world. You could have SOME hero appearances, even cameos of the 'big names' (esp. Iron Man... no Downey, just the suit) interviews, photos, etc...

I always thought this would work, but not for Avengers necessarily. How cool would Gotham PD be? Though the Phil Caulson idea someone mentioned sounds promising if that's the direction they steer towards.

I hope DC's and Warner Bro's are taking notes.

This is how you develop a TV series set in the same universe as your films. Make them smaller scaled and don't play with casting different roles for TV and movie with the same characters. Also try not to use your Justice League characters as the center of the series. Avoid that altogether! Good luck with the Green Arrow.

MARVELS

I think, and maybe it's just me, but something based on the Marvel 4 part limited series titled, well, MARVELS, could be an interesting idea for a tv show. Now I'm not saying they should take the books and make it into a tv series, but something along those lines.
How "normal" people react to superheroes, villains and all the crazy shit they stir up!

For my money, i'd love to see something in the same vein as Marvels. Seeing the Marvel universe through the civilians eyes. Granted, you would need character cameos but not necessarily up close and personal, but with all the great writers Marvel has, you could make it pretty good.

Item 47

i wouldnt mind a series that follows regular people living in superhero world. Like following police, politicians, and regular people all dealing with the sudden impact of having superheroes. Dont actually have ironman or hulk in the show, but show how they effect a world from a different angle. Its an interesting idea that i dont think as ever been done and it could be pretty cool if done right

I like the ideas being mentioned of either a Shield series or one that follows civilians in a world with superheros (each episode depicting normal people's reactions...direct or indirect...to say what happened when Hulk fought Abomination or the alien invasion in the Avengers (exactly what the recent Avengers' short did). I keep saying it but shame Spider-man is not with Disney...you could have a series following the investigative reporters of the Daily Bugle reporting on super powered

Double Post

Okay, here's another idea then: a SHIELD series set in the 60s. We already established that Tony Stark's father was alive during WW2 and that he was working on the technology to make a flying car (which would one day no doubt become the helicarrier). A TV series could explore the early days of SHIELD. They could have David Hasselhof as the former Sergeant Fury now promoted to Colonel Fury. They don't have to explain why Colonel Fury is white in the 60s and black forty years later because

I smell smoke.

Anyone else feel like this is a cover-up story? Like maybe the studio wants to do a "major" character series but they don't wanna let the cat out of the bag on who/what just yet? A bit like when they start production on a movie under a working title.

My pitch

ABC already passed on a Jessica Jones series. They may be reconsidering.

In the comics, Jessica Jones married Luke Cage so we could have
Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Danny Rand, Colleen Wing, Misty Knight and
Shang Chi as characters. Maybe they could throw in Maria Vasquez and
Paul Denning too. Basically they would resemble their comics
character but they wouldn't wear costumes or masks or go by code names
because that would be silly but they could follow the detective
agency /

Basically they would have cases that would be set in the Marvel
Universe so it would also be like a Marvel Universe version of the X-
Files or Fringe but with an ensemble cast.

My Pitch

Get high school students to write the original stories. Assign A-list directors and actors to turn those stories into good TV. Every week different characters, different production crews. It would inspire literacy in school and attract top talent because it's a prestige project.
