The Avengers 2 release date confirmed plus a logline for Guardians of the Galaxy

Aug. 16, 2012by: Paul Shirey

We got wind of a potential release date for Joss Whedon's THE AVENGERS 2 last week, but today comes the official announcement for the slot, which is set for May 1, 2015.  For a minute there I thought I wouldn't have anything to live for, but it looks like I'm going to continue to draw breath for at least another three years so I can see this sucker blow my mind when it hits theaters.  Okay, so I'm exaggerating a little, but still...that's some damn fine news.

Here's the press release:

The Walt Disney Studios has announced a release date for Marvel Studios’ sequel to the biggest Super Hero blockbuster and third highest grossing film of all time, Marvel’s The Avengers. Joss Whedon returns to write and direct the UNTITLED MARVEL’S AVENGERS SEQUEL set for release May 1, 2015.

With Whedon back at the helm I think many fans are breathing a sigh of relief.  While I'm sure that there are a good handful of directors who could've handled the sequel, I feel that consistency and understanding of the material are key, so getting Whedon on board keeps the train on the tracks, so to speak.

Also today, we have a small synopsis for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, which goes like this:

"About a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants."

I'll leave it up to you guys to speculate in which directions that logline could take you...

This updates the current Marvel slate as such:

IRON MAN 3 on May 3, 2013

THOR: THE DARK WORLD on November 8, 2013

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER on April 4, 2014

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY on August 1, 2014

THE AVENGERS 2 on May 1, 2015

There's some "wiggle room" between GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and THE AVENGERS 2, so perhaps they'll squeeze Edgar Wright's ANT MAN in there somewhere, which would be my best guess.  I'm sure an announcement for that project will hit soon, but until then, it's time to update your calendars and start counting down to yet another superhero extravaganza.

Unless your David Cronenberg, of course.  More as these develop. Oh, and don't forget, THE AVENGERS hits blu-ray next month on September 25, 2012.

Extra Tidbit: Every now and then, I geek out. Looking at that line-up = geeking out.

What to expect in Guardians of The Galaxy

Expect that the item that everyone is after to be The Infinity Gauntlet. It's the only thing that would make sense to me. Plus, expect Red Skull working with Thanos in this movie. The movie has the potential to being really great and I have a feeling that Rocket Raccoon will by accident get sent to Earth and into SHIELD's lap by the end of it causing the others to search for him and getting everyone together by Phase 2.

You say the release date is Sep 25th for Avengers DVD Blu-ray release. We in Australia get it August 29th. Should have the same release date world wide. They did it with the cinema release too. We got it April 25th I think it was.

Still a little worried about this raccoon fellow. Not sure how it will translate to the big screen. Although cant wait for all the classic one liners that will spew from Starks mouth about giant talking gun toting rodents. :-)

New characters?

For the first time I am kind of not-psyched about Avengers. I really wish they had definitively stated that there was going to be a new interesting character introduced to the team. This just seems like a re-hash without adding someone new. I have seen these characters and know them. I know "Ant Man" is possible, but, blech...I can't think of a more goofy "superhero". Dr. Strange would've been a good choice.

Looking like a good lineup, but with all of the first movies having come out, I have to wonder how the sequels will stack up. And for me, Thor and Captain America were pleasant surprises. For those two in particular, the expectations will be higher. I am actually quite looking forward to Guardians though, hopefully that will be a fun movie.

Vance Astro is a U.S. astronaut and a Guardian of the Galaxy. Maybe, Vance is the pilot mentioned.

Vance aka Major Victory isn't a human though, he's a mutant and I think 20th Century Fox might own him. Not to mention that some people may be confused on why he's throwing Captain Americas shield around.

I'm sure they will make adjustments for the film. Marvel does a good job of translating their projects from page to screen, even if they don't completely match the origin material. All I know is: Rocket Raccoon!

Still sounds good!

Yeah, Marvel knows what they're doing. Focusing the story of Guardians of the Galaxy on the origin of Jack Flagg (just guessing as he's the cynical only human member of the Guardians whose catchphrase is "I hate cosmic stuff") is a great way to get the uninitiated on board by showing the world through a human characters eyes. A lot of humor can be gleamed by someone whose just as weirded out by Groot and Rocket Raccoon as the audience is. I really hope they're able to squeeze Ant-Man in there

Interesting...

I was initially hesitant when they announced Guardians of the Galaxy, and maybe i still am, to a certain extent. Coming from someone with little comic book background, the GotG team just doesn't seem very likely to work in a movie without being almost completely CG-heavy or just plain cheesy. But with the inclusion of a U.S. pilot that may (or may not) be a central character, it gives us someone to relate to who can sort of stand in proxy for the audience while all these crazy cosmic things are

I'm sure you're one of the few, considering the immense success of the first one. So naturally you're going to get a lot of thumbs down.

Someone needs to create a working time-machine. I can not wait for all these movies.

As for Ant-Man, I don't really see that as a summer blockbuster(don't get me wrong, I want to see it.), so I could see that releasing in the Spring or late Fall.
