Kevin Feige discusses Marvel's Phase Two, Phase Three, Thanos, and Planet Hulk

Sep. 21, 2012by: Alex Maidy

Now that we know the road map for Phase Two of the Marvel cinematic universe is falling into place, executive Kevin Feige is letting loose some news about where Phase Three may take us.

On whether Thanos was a throwaway at the end of THE AVENGERS: “There’s a great track record now about lobbing something in at the last moment to get the audience buzzing. Particularly when it came to Thanos, [we knew] that most people in that audience had no idea who that purple guy was — but they could clearly tell he was important, and knew if they asked the two or three people sitting next to them, somebody would know who he was.”

Thanos' role in the future of the Marvel films: “Clearly, there’s a purpose to us putting him in the end of that movie. We do have plans for him. I wouldn’t say we ever feel the need to rush anything one way or the other. We succeeded in Phase One because we stuck to our guns and stuck to the plan. That plan took place over many, many years and it ultimately paid off. I see Phase Two unfolding in the same way of us taking our time, us doing what’s right for each individual movie, while folding in elements that will not only build up to the culmination of Phase Two, but even Phase Three."

What direction would they take a Hulk movie: "I don't think there's a lot that we couldn't do someday, as the cinematic universe continues to grow and expand and get as big as the comic book universe. 'Planet Hulk' is a cool story. 'World War Hulk' is a cool story.''

When we can expect a Hulk solo adventure: "Do I think Hulk can carry a movie and be as entertaining as he was in THE AVENGERS? I do believe that. I do believe he absolutely could. We certainly are not even going to attempt that until THE AVENGERS 2. So there's a lot of time to think about it."

The hazards of making too many Marvel movies too fast: "I think there's pitfalls of continuity-overload, and mythology getting so dense that it almost collapses in on itself. It happens every few decades or so in the comics. Apart from that, I'd say everything is on the table."

Whether you are fans of Marvel or not, you cannot deny that they know how to plan ahead. They also know that keeping news from the fans is not the right way to handle it. Since THE AVENGERS was originally announced, we have been given tons of sneak peeks and heads up as to where they were headed. I am definitely liking the planned approach they are taking with these phases.

Phase Two begins on May 3rd, 2013 with IRON MAN 3 and concludes with THE AVENGERS 2 on May 1st, 2015.

Extra Tidbit: My plea to Marvel: Let Thanos win in THE AVENGERS 2! Set up Phase Three to be our heroes banding back together in the face of defeat to give the Mad Titan a major intergalactic ass kicking.

I don't see Planet Hulk as its own movie, maybe work elements of that into the other Marvel movies, but you'd need Professor X, Reed Richards, and Namor to make sense as characters in Marvel's universe for the set-up which is a big ask. If you trimmed their role down to just Tony Stark and SHIELD making 'the decision', it loses a lot of its power and aftershocks relevant to the World War Hulk story. But as a standalone story, Planet Hulk is pretty out there - kinda like John Carter starring the

Mr. Kevin Feige is saying all the right stuff, a lot of sites are reporting this interview but the outstanding joblo coverage got all the important nuggets and I am more than thankful for this story. However, does anyone else think it's weird and kinda funny that they got Alex Maidy, the one guy who didn't dig the Avengers to cover this?

Marvel's plans are most pleasing right now. However, Marvel, please do not wait so long for a Hulk movie. Every sub-genre has its day. And someday, the general public will be tired of superhero movies. Then, we die-hards might not get our fix on such a regular basis, and Hollywood might not produce a Hulk movie. So, maybe, give us one sooner rather than later. It would be a welcome surprise amongst your Phase Two plans.

Then again, a Hulk TV series premieres sometime soon. If that kicks

Blow my mind.

Crossover. Get Warner and Marvel together and Roger Rabbit my ass. How awesome was it to see Mickey and Bugs share the screen? I want to see Batman and Iron Man go toe to toe. The Hulk and Superman... Just saying.

Whatever Marvel do.

They need to learn to treat their talent a tad better.
I love Ruffalo and Cheadle, but regardless of who's performance is better, losing Norton and Terrance Howard shouldn't have been an issue in the first place.

Other than that though, they've been on an amazing run, I can't wait to see where they're taking us next, and will be in that cinema seat for each and every release.

Phase 3

I really want Phase 3 to be based on the Civil War storyline, but too many of the players have their rights owned by other studios. You can't do a Civil War arc without Spiderman, Fantastic 4, or the X-Men. At least not correctly.

Extra Tidbit

I believe that Thanos will beat the Avengers in Phase 2 because he will have the Infinity Gauntlet and they won't know how to defeat him at that time and it really is such a powerful weapon in the Marvel Universe.
