Marvel's Kevin Feige on why Ultron was picked to be the main villain in The Avengers: Age of Ultron

01.09.2014

Marvel Head Kevin Feige recently spoke with SFX (via CBM) and shared a few details on THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. In the comments below, Feige talks about the new additions to the superhero team, and why Ultron was chosen to be the main villain. Let's get right to it.

Kevin Feige on Ultron:

Joss Whedon had a great idea for the character and how to use him to unify the Avengers again and acquire their services once more. He was a favorite. Joss and I were on the production of the first Avengers movie and we started having conversations about Ultron, and how he could come about and how we could adapt his origin to the continuity of the cinematic universe. It literally was just little discussions between takes but thankfully Joss files all that kind of stuff away in his brain. Then when the time arrived, he started outing it, so he went back to that and built a very good story.

Feige says THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is only the title of the movie, and won't be connected to the ongoing comic book series:

We didn't want to merely have a '2' after Avengers so we wanted to give it a subtitle. We have various things that we were looking at and Age of Ultron - which just happened to be a the name of a comic book series as well - was our favorite.

Kevin Feige on casting James Spader for Ultron:

I first met James Spader two or three years ago. I thought it would be great to have him in our universe and we finally found the right role with Joss's version of Ultron.

Feige on adding Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, and if there are too many protagonists in the film:

It's always a balance with any movie, not to overwhelm it with too many story elements.Certainly when it comes to comic book movies, you can fall into the trap of having too many villains and in the case of team-based movies, having too many heroes. But what Joss has in mind to bring those characters into the story happens in a very natural fashion over the course of the story. It's also the tradition of the Avengers to switch up the roster every now and again and to have new characters coming in. It's just part of the fun, but we wouldn't have included them if it had just been a case of 'Oh, we want two new figures, two new costumes.' It very much flows with the story that Joss is creating.

I'm sure I don't have to tell you guys how psyched I am for THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. It's going to be an absolutely huge movie, and I can't wait to see the superhero team back in action. Some might be worried there will be too much going on in the new film, but with Joss Whedon behind the wheel, I'm extremely confident that we'll be getting another awesome Avengers movie.

THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON will be in theaters on May 1st, 2015.

More like the mastermind. Ronan the Accuser has been confirmed as the main villain for that movie.

So are we really going to forget that Thanos was revealed in the Avengers credits? I dont know much about the guy but it still feels a bit like a bait and switch to reveal him, lead us to believe hes the next major villain, switch to Ultron and never bring up Thanos again. Id appreciate an explanation about how he figures into the scheme of things

Go to a comic book store, pick up the Infinity Gauntlet, the Infinity War and the infinity Crusade series and you'll understand his role in the universe is much more expansive than just being an Avengers villian. If you won't do that then wait a year and I guarantee you that he will be involved in The Age of Ultron as a puppet master. He will probably make his debut in Avengers 3 >insert subtitle here<

I'm just ready to see Hulk kick some more ass since we haven't seen him at all since the events of the first Avengers film.

There is a great deal of trust built up between the Marvel films and the fan base. Announcing Spader as Ultron was acclaimed by an excited fan base as "hell yeah". Same thing with Paul Rudd as Ant-Man. This started a while back with RDJ as Iron Man Evan as Captain America and Hemsworth as Thor. Even Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, casting has been great in the Marvel films. Hiddleston as Loki was perfect. Marvel is doing it right and not taking wild chances. Comparing it to the DC world,

Comparing it to the DC world, there has been some unrest over casting Affleck as Batman and Gadot as Wonder Woman. They may end up being great. But overall I think there is more consensus in the Marvel fanbase over the casting decisions. (BTW, I think that Garfield as Spidey is a great casting choice as well and who can complain about Jackman as Wolverine?.) Marvel gets it right almost always.

Yes but Nolan's Batman casting was stellar. I think you are referring more to the new universe they are setting up which we haven't seen yet besides Man of Steel. But remember there has always been that kind of unrest for DC's casting i.e. Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Heath Ledger as Joker so I wouldn't knock them for that. Marvel has had better luck and finding people who embody these roles and with fanboys like Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon at the helms of their projects the casting is going

First off: very excited for "Age of Ultron," and I do believe Joss can handle all the new elements just fine. And now that they've got the "origin" of the team together, it should be all gravy from here on out.
However, just to be a little bit of a cock, I'm sure they also chose Ultron because he's one of three Avengers villains even comic book readers can name without having to go to Wikipedia.

It would be quite easy for them to drop certain heroes for future movies...in order to ease congestion. Thor could be busy in Asgard, for instance. Events in the solo movies could explain absences in the next Avengers installments. TV series often have episodes without certain members of the main cast showing up...or showing up in a very brief scene.

Also, Renner might not return as Hawkeye. Therefore, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch could appear in his place.

I still think Disney-Marvel should split the Avengers into two teams. They can put out twice the movies and give all of the characters equal and proper screen time. Also, Disney-Marvel could put out an Avengers movie every other year instead of every three years that way.
(Team One) The Avengers: Captain America, Thor, Scarlett Witch, Ant-Man, and Quicksilver
(Team Two) The Avengers: West Coast: Iron Man, Black Widow, The Hulk, Black Panther, and Hawkeye.

Happy to see Feige shying away from the title "Avengers 2"

"Age of Ulton" is a sick title unto itself.

So far the best casting for the new Avengers movie is casting James Spader. I'm pretty sure even if it's just only for voice over of Ultron, Spader can be very cunning and sinister in nature of that character.

They say the sequels are always about the villains (The Dark Knight with the Joker, Star Trek Into Darkness with "John Harrison") so I certainly hope Ultron proves a menacing, exciting and worthy foe to our band of ticking time bombs.
