Marvel's name absent from Big Hero 6 marketing is a financial decision

08.22.2014

Ever since the project was first announced, BIG HERO 6 has been discussed as Marvel's first animated film since Disney purchased the company. But, once the trailer and marketing material were released, there has been not a single mention of the story originating as a Marvel comic. Some speculated that it may be to downplay any consideration that the animated family film is connected to the live action Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the reasoning behind the marketing of the film seems to be purely financial in nature.

In his Tumblr, Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort shared the following hypothetical question.

"If you had two things, and on one you earned 100% of the revenues from the efforts that you put into making it, and the other you earned a much smaller percentage for the same amount of time and effort, you’d be more likely to concentrate more heavily on the first, wouldn’t you?”

Case in point, The Hollywood Reporter discovered that while Disney has their usual range of product tie-ins in the form of games, toys, books, and more with partners such as Random House, Marvel is planning no reprints of BIG HERO 6 comics or character appearances in current titles to promote the Disney Animation film.

In the end, Marvel is likely going to promote the hell out of their popular titles as they did with major announcements for Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man on shows like The View and The Colbert Report in recent months, characters who are integral to the MCU. Will this affect BIG HERO 6 in any way? That remains to be seen. The trailers look fun and it could build an audience purely on the push that it comes from the creators of FROZEN and WRECK-IT RALPH, but stay tuned if Marvel changes their tune after the movie debuts on November 7th.

There's also the fact that the original comic book characters were basically stereotypical pastiches of things that gaijins thought were cool in Japan. Didn't want to read the comic book then, wouldn't want to read them now.

Oh and while we're on the subject of Disney/Marvel stuff, when will Abadazad going to be adapted?

Not surprised...Disney has been about money first and foremost for a long time now. Anybody who gives a damn about Marvel, Star Wars, or Pixar should be concerned. I know I am.

What are you talking about? I saw a trailer just a few weeks ago ahead of "Guardians" that explicitly stated, "Based on the Marvel comic."

This flic is far from what and who marvels big hero six are. I t had sunfire, jade dragon and four Asian hero's hence sunfire getting top billing on the comic cover.. this is kiddie fluff crap, the balloon robot??? armed up is a poor ko of box from alphaflight and the kid is a ko of amadaus cho. We can now thank good ole now a bartender former marvel comics x-men line editor Jason Liebig for this mess as he pushed the original book back in the day. I don't think it made it past 6 issues

That quote came from someone asking him about the X-Men not getting much new content...Marvel doesn't want to do as much to feed popularity of the franchises that other studios currently have. I don't see where that quote has any bearing on this Disney/Marvel property. I only see it as Marvel will do much less for X-Men, FF and Spider-Man as long as Fox and Sony have those film rights. They will feed their time and effort into properties they can transition to film themselves.

Disney got most the rights to Spider-Man back and now regained all product rights and Disney handles distrubting for global future releases. Sony will still distribute domestic releases.

I could have sworn one of the trailers said it was a Marvel comic.

You are correct, while the article isn't. The first full trailer that followed the teaser said "Based on Marvel's Big Hero 6 Comic Book" but they dropped this on the next run of the same trailer the following weekend.

I actually think this is a good strategy, that instead of giving us The Adventures of Teenage Nick Fury, Disney chooses a Marvel property that can be given its own identity for an animated feature.

That quote just means it sucks and they didn't care as much. That's pretty much what it translates to. Doesn't it?

It just means that Marvel proper doesn't get as big of a cut of the profits of a movie produced by Disney.

On the MCU movies, Marvel produces and therefore gets the biggest chunk of change. Disney distributes. On Big Hero 6, Disney is producing and distributing, so Marvel doesn't see the same return. So from their standpoint, there is much less incentive to promote the film.

Sure, Marvel and Disney are technically under one roof, but there is still more incentive for Marvel Studios to
