Marvel's The Avengers new trailer date, pics, and insider thoughts

Feb. 22, 2012by:

I think it's safe to say that the majority of us were pretty much blown away by the extended Super Bowl trailer for Marvel's THE AVENGERS last month. Well, it seems we're in for a big treat next week, as the all-new trailer is set to launch next Wednesday, February 29th and will likely screen ahead of JOHN CARTER. For some, that may be reason enough to see it.

We also received a hi-res image from the film, which we've already seen, but it's in much better shape here:

Additionally, AICN got a scoop from their Marvel insiders regarding the Marvel film, saying:

"Word 'round the campfire is Marvel considers The Avengers to be their best outing yet. I've talked to some cynics in the group who weren't sure it was going to come together and they're all doing their mea culpas now. They say it has the heart, the action, the humor and the suspense a movie like The Avengers should have. The only criticisms I've heard is that Whedon's eye isn't as cinematic as it should be, but that the rest of the movie is so good that you accept it."

In response to a follow up question about the look of THE AVENGERS, AICN had this to say:

"When I asked "Does it look like TV?" The source's response was in the affirmative. But he/she/it has always been honest with me and said that even though it looks like TV you don't mind it because the rest of the movie is so good. Interesting stuff."

I've always felt that Whedon was up to the task and I have no doubt he'll deliver the goods, but the TV vibe of his work has always bugged me a bit. However, everything I've seen via the trailers has left me very satisfied.

Stay tuned for more on THE AVENGERS and be on the lookout for the new trailer next week as we continue to prepare for this sucker to hit the big screens on May 4th, 2012 (72 days and counting!)

Extra Tidbit: Anyone else concerned about Whedon's "TV" look?

Every time I hear about "AICN's" super secret sources...

...I cringe. It just smacks of how 8 year olds brag to each other, but it's coming from a site run by adults. Sigh.

What does "TV-look" even mean ? Is it synonymous with "cheap" ?

The trailers certainly do not look cheap.

The TV look is mainly using wide shots with evenly lit sets designed to not have to be adjusted for every shot. TV uses this technique to shoot fast. This almost makes the sets look like live theater. It's not cheap, it's just odd for some to see this in a Hollywood movie.

Most movies take their time to paint every shot with light.

I see. Thanks for clearing that up Silverload.

Btw. I liked the latest Star Trek, didn't feel like "TV" at all.

J.J. Abrams Star Trek had that TV look and no one seemed to care.

As someone who watched Buffy, Angel, and Firefly, I can give shit if this has the "TV look". All the shows kicked ass and always looked great to me, especially Firefly. Bring it on Joss!

I really wish...

That people would stop comparing The Avengers to TDKR...Marvel and DC are take their stories in two totally different directions, Batman is not The Avengers. I think what is going to be fun, is that Avengers is going to be slick, fun and adventurious while TDKR will be grounded, grim and dark. Thats what suits the characters, stop comparing the two. The only thing I want is for both of them to be sweet for their own reasons.

Considering that the Serenity movie was exceptional, I don't care how people classify the camera work. If Avengers delivers that and adds big budget action, it'll be the best movie of the year.
This new trailer may indeed be reason enough to see John Carter.

Triangle Or Circle

AHHHHH! Another picture with Iron Man having the triangle arc. Half have the circle. I guess he starts with the triangle, to continue on from the last movie, then goes back to the circle! I want the movie to come out already so I can see what the deal is. I can't believe its bugging me this much.

funny. im not bothered by the arc, but the black smoke coming off of ghost rider's head bothers me. typically indictive of a chemical reaction is smoke...black being gasoline. there shouldnt be any chemical reactions within hellfire. and just cuz youre not wondering...i did enjoy GRSoV.

I have plenty of reservations, but Iron Man soaring upwards through scores of bad guys was pretty damn cinematic.

Just another reason this flick will pale in comparison to TDKR. Never really "got" the hype surrounding Whedon. But lets see. I'll be in the theater to watch it. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to see the movie... but about as excited as I was to see... Thor. I just don't get the feeling that it is going to be the epitome of the superhero movie like a lot are predicting. Only time will tell.

finally, someone with the guts to say what needs to be said. while i disagree with your point about it being as exciting as thor, i do believe TDKR will knock this out of the water. not because it'll be bad, but because TDKR will be so epic. it absolutely wont be the epitome of superhero movies, but it'll be fun, action packed, and one heck of a (hopefully) 2+ hour ride. i have a feeling it'll be as good or even better than the 1st iron man movie. like you said, we'll have to wait and see

I think people are equating the choice of the 1.85:1 aspect ratio to be the "TV look". While I feel a movie like The Avengers would probably be better suited for 2.35:1 anamorphic, there have been plenty of big movies shot this way (Spider-man 1, Avatar). Not worried about Whedon's eye at all -- Serenity was pretty damn cinematic as well.

I think the anticipation for the avangers has now triumph my anticipation for the dark knight. The flick just seems more grand and fun. This flick is one film that every comic book reader dreamed of even if youre not a marvel fan (I prefer DC over Marvel any day btw). I really do hope that they pull this off.
