Mary Elizabeth Winstead to star opposite Will Smith in Gemini Man

10 Cloverfield Lane Mary Elizabeth Winstead

That was fast. Just yesterday we shared the word that there were three actresses in the running for the female lead in director Ang Lee's sci-fi action thriller GEMINI MAN: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Tatiana Maslany, and Elizabeth Debicki. Hours later, the announcement was made that the role has gone to Winstead.

It's a choice that makes sense, as Winstead is the most high profile of the three at the moment, and she is pretty great at her job.

GEMINI MAN is set to star Will Smith as Henry,

an aging assassin who finds himself in a battle with the ultimate opponent: his clone, who is 25 years younger and at the peak of his abilities.

Clive Owen will be playing the head of the cloning project, while Winstead's character is someone who "works for the same company as Henry and is tasked to surveil him."

It's not clear who will be getting a writing credit on the film, since the project has been in development hell for twenty years and has been worked on by several writers during that time. Darren Lemke came up with the initial idea and David Benioff, Jonathan Hensleigh, and Brian Helgeland are among the writers who have done drafts over the years.

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer for Paramount and Skydance, GEMINI MAN will begin filming next month in locations including Savannah, Georgia and Budapest, Hungary.
