Matt Damon confirms return to Bourne franchise for a 2016 release

11.09.2014

We've had a lot of back and forth on Matt Damon returning to the Bourne franchise since his supposed last outing in 2007's THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM and now we've got official word from the man himself. Yesterday, while celebrating their recent Project Greenlight venture, both Damon and Ben Affleck talked to E! Online and let slip that Jason Bourne would be returning to the big screen in 2016 with Damon saying:

"Yes, next year. It'll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. [Director] Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that's all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes."

Damon has indeed made it clear that the only way he'd do another Bourne film is with Greengrass involved, so with that box checked and his involvement confirmed, you can now rest easy that the film is, in fact, happening. Damon is currently in pre-production for Ridley Scott's THE MARTIAN and has a few other projects on the line, which is fine as he has plenty of time between now and a 2016 release date to be "Bourne again." Interestingly, director Justin Lin is also preparing a sequel to the spinoff series THE BOURNE LEGACY with Jeremy Renner to also debut in 2016. It's unclear how either film will tie in to one another, but it will certainly be interesting. Personally, I'd love to see both Renner and Damon team up to whup some collective ass, but that's just me.

We'll update you as this continues to develop. You can see Matt Damon currently in INTERSTELLAR, now in theaters.

I love the original trilogy they're fantastic, I see legacy as a separate movie to the original 3, its not bad but not that good either, I only want another if its going to be on par with the original 3 or its pointless

Jeez dude, what's your deal on hating Matt Damon so much. Your like those Key & Peele characters that like Liam Neeson so much, but the opposite, screaming DAMON at the top of your lungs. You probably thought Matt Damon acting sucked in Team America too huh?

Feel free to name me Damon's last great acting performance. Heck, I'd settle for the last great movie he headed (or even played a major role in)....

More than that, can you explain why you're so butthurt over my comment that you felt compelled to start a new thread just to talk about me?

Will he be running away from everyone and crying like a big baby because he doesn't want to be a super-assassin anymore? Aww, poor Jason Bourne: murdering people for politics wasn't as cool and exciting as they promised. Fucking tool.

Too little, too late

Sorry, Matt, you had a chance...now that franchise is dead to me. Your return will only serve to make you look desperate for work :(

To Des: Name one performance in which he's first-rated

Disregarding the box-office records, Matt Damon has been consistently working in a variety of genres and achieved major successes. If we are purely critiquing him as an artist, he inhabits a style that, though not entirely disappearing into his roles, exudes an underrated screen presence. One of his virtues is the willingness to be portrayed in less-than-stellar lights; to put it bluntly, he doesn’t mind playing cowardly, arrogant/ selfish assholes. He has a vast filmography, but just to name a few:

- Syriana: He is excellent as an ambition-driven consultant that yearns to rub elbows with the oil-rich royal families and disguises it with idealism (and later also to escape family loss).
- The Adjustment Bureau: A sleazy politician who confronts his own lack of integrity.
- Hereafter: A disillusioned psychic.
- The Departed: A two-faced, cowardly undercover for the Boston mafia.
- The Talented Mr. Ripley: Insecure and ambition-driven, murderous liar.
- The Informant: A self-deceiving professional fraud.

He is also excellent in Courage Under Fire, Saving Private Ryan, The Good Shepherd, Invictus, True Grit, Good Will Hunting.

Lastly, pertaining to the posting, he is perfect as the personification of Bourne, a man whose willingness to serve his country has been manipulated. He is trained to be someone whose immediate response to threats comes in the form of death and violence. He exudes the confusion and pain as someone built to serve his ideal only to realize that he is serving self-interests, unsanctioned hits and political greed.

LOL....what is it with the butthurt Matt Damon ass-kissers who can't even answer a question in the thread it was asked, but need to jump up and down begging for attention?

Half of those performances he was just okay in, and most are over a decade old. Unlike his pal Affleck, who has chosen to dial down his appearances and be in (or create) films with greater impact, Damon just constantly works, appearing in crap films all over the place, phoning in the same acting job he does in virtually

But I'm sorry that I hurt your feelings so badly by not loving Matt as much as you. I hope someday you'll recover.

Uhm...I think the Departed won best picture. It's not that all of us are ass-kissing Damon, but we know he is passionate and has a certain quality which is usually at least going to be something somewhat different. I see what monuments men was going for. I thought promised land was good. I can't wait to see Zero Thereom. He hasn't done a big film in awhile? So what? He's paid his dues he can do what he want. What about Elysium? Everyone is bitching ab sequels when that is really a good

But what I'm saying is, we aren't ass kissing Damon, we are just saying today is Monday, and your running around trying to plug in every leak on this thread arguing that it's not. You've done this before and make lame attempts at insults. Just say I don't know why ppl like Matt Damon so much. I think he's over-rated and go on. You are like the soloist, but super aggressive, which says insecure. But here you go... hopefully this fills you up

I doubt no one is as passionate ab Matt Damon as you (and side note, his puppet in Team America was just broken. Those guys weren't making fun of him really but they couldn't figure out a way to use the broken puppet). Congrats on getting me, and others, to feed you so much though

Bealz, I'm not trying to offend you, but you can seriously read that paragraph ("perfect personification of Bourne"?) and say this guy isn't in love with Matt Damon? Seriously, he's a mediocre actor (I never said bad), not Brando, Duvall, or Hackman. He's appeared in a TON of mediocre films, which is all I said in my ONE post to this page (but thanks for claiming I was "all over"). Instead of responding to my thread, there were 2 Damon fans who created new threads just to make sure everyone saw how mad they were at me for not liking him.

Since then I answered the guy because he responded to me, but that's it. I just stated my opinion. Sorry you don't think that should be a right here.....you know, unless it agrees with you.

And by the way, Elysium was freaking awful! The critics hated it, the audience hated it, and the studio hated how much money they lost on it. Damon was terrible in it, but then again he played Jason Bourne with a metal skeleton on his back, so maybe it's just me.......

I do not "love" Matt Damon. As a film goer, his projects usually elicit more interest than his merely being in them. He is no Daniel Day Lewis with his craft nor Brad Pitt with his rugged charm (which I believed was intentionally cultivated after he turned 40), not to mention the classic character actors. Matt Damon is not in the same league yet, and I doubt he will ever be. I merely try to evaluate him for his portfolio and track record, and the conclusion is that he is a first-rated actor

Why the spoiler at the end???

I've been avoiding spoilers for Interstellar and I get a secret casting spoiler for an article completely unrelated except for Damon. Thanks for that. I bet it was fun for the people that didn't know before hand.

Imagine the efforts the studio and the cast went to, to make sure this was kept a secret. Matt Damon was not included in the promotion for the film. His name was not mentioned and he did not attend any of the premieres.

And it paid off for people like me. It was a very pleasant experience for me seeing Matt out of the blue as I was least expecting it. It's these small things that make the moviegoing experience fun.

Of course, all this is irrelevant now.

Yeah, I'm also very disappointed that they chose to include that line at the end. It has no bearing on the story above it and it definitely spoiled the surprise. I don't know the statute of limitations for spoilers, but it's got to be more than five days.

I am so sick of him.....

I was sick of him already, but when the Nolan fanboys on IGN started talking about how Interstellar was worth seeing just because of Damon's appearance (which might have been the dumbest turn of any character in a movie this year), I officially reached critical mass.

If he appears in a movie, I will actively avoid it. Matt, get a hobby.....you're an obnoxious douche and I'm sick of you and your painfully mediocre acting (and non-existent fighting) skills. Just go away.......PLEASE!!!!

So between this and Toy Story 4, it's safe to assume that any successful film series we thought were over, will in fact be getting more films. It's already happening with Star Wars and Jurassic Park. I guarantee the studios will find another way to make more Middle Earth films. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we hear something about another Matrix film. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised to hear about another Godfather movie at this point. I guess all I can do is hope these new films are

Totally agree. While I'm actually excited about Jurassic World and The Force Awakens (ugh, that title...), there really is an epidemic of reboot-itis and prequel/sequel-itis in Hollywood. Instead of producing new original ideas and finding the NEXT Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and Toy Story, it seems like they're perfectly content to be lazy and just remake or create sequels to all the classics. It's a shame, and as long as these types of movies continue to make money, we'll keep getting more of

That's why I make sure I always support movies like Edge of Tomorrow, Snowpiercer, Locke, Interstellar, and others. If those movies could've made more money (excluding Interstellar, obviously), perhaps we'd get more fresh, original, exciting movies like those.

The Bourne franchise really should've just ended with Ultimatum. It was such a perfect ending to the story, and I haven't had any interest in seeing that universe anymore in Jeremy Renner's spin-off movie. Having Matt Damon return as Bourne just strikes me as a knee-jerk reaction to the fact that Legacy wasn't as critically or financially successful as the trilogy. I'm afraid I'm not very interested in this, either, Matt Damon or no.

I think it has to do with the fact that Legacy didn't actually do terribly. Apparently people would watch a Bourne movie without Bourne (not as many people, but it made bank). Now all the fans want is the man himself back.

Damon's role in the film was meant to be a surprise. I loved the unexpectedness of seeing him pop up halfway through the film, it was so refreshing for such a big film to have that element of surprise. I'd have been PISSED if that was ruined for me. Paul, a more professional way to have handled this was to apologize, not tell Niklsun to "relax". Unbelievable.
