Matt Damon goes on a rampage in suburbia in first Suburbicon trailer

The 1950s-era suburbia is remembered most for its drive-in movie theaters, malt shops, squeaky clean vibes, and abundance of cheeseburgers and jukeboxes. But like with any seemingly perfect setting there was probably plenty a lot of mischief brewing under the surface that wasn’t so family-friendly. George Clooney’s newest film, SUBURBICON, takes that idea and goes wild and crazy with it, telling the story of a man (Matt Damon) who is pushed to his limits and decides to do what he must to defend his family. That makes this sound more like Matt Damon returning to a Jason Bourne-type role, but trust me, this is more THE INFORMANT Matt Damon.

Suburbicon is a peaceful, idyllic suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns…the perfect place to raise a family, and in the summer of 1959, the Lodge family is doing just that. But the tranquil surface masks a disturbing reality, as husband and father Gardner Lodge (Matt Damon) must navigate the town’s dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit, and violence. This is a tale of very flawed people making very bad choices. This is Suburbicon.

What I'm most curious to see play out is how the film balances the social anxieties and tensions with the broad humor. I found myself engrossed by the former and laughing my ass off with the latter, so how the two mesh could be where the movie succeeds or fails. The script from Joel and Ethan Coen make this a must-see no matter what, and watching Damon scamper away on a tricycle is the icing on the cake.

SUBURBICON hits theaters with Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Oscar Isaac and more October 27.
