Matt Damon will be hunted to the ends of the Earth for what he is going to do in the trailer for Neill Blomkamp's Elysium

Apr. 9, 2013by: Niki Stephens

I knew after seeing DISTRICT 9 that Neill Blomkamp was going to great things in the world of Science Fiction cinema. He's definitely proving my instincts correct with this trailer for ELYSIUM.

We've known very little about this movie, and just got a poster for it yesterday. It was all just a big mystery that has finally been revealed. The trailer is exceptional. We are introduced to a world that could only be created in fiction: no disease, no negativity, no war-- a Utopia. Then find that if you don't have the credentials or the money, that you cannot have access to a place that is known as ELYSIUM. The undesirables are left on Earth where things are not so great. In an effort to make things right, Matt Damon risks his life to obtain some balance to the rest of the society.

Check it out below.

Synopsis: In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet's crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium - but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens' luxurious lifestyle. The only man with the chance bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission - one that pits him against Elysium's Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces - but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.

Extra Tidbit: Jimmy-O recently just got to see 10-minutes of the film, and he thinks it's awesome!

Looking awesome.can't wait to watch this movie.seems like this is going to be my favourite movie of this year.concept sounds opposite to Oblivion.and this is what the recent film 'Upside down' should have been,an action thriller between Utopian and dystopian worlds.even though it sounds like Battle Angel,i would be like to see its Neill Blomkamp's version rather than James cameron's version who will throw a cheesy interworld love story like in Avatar into this story to gain universal boxoffice

Battle Angel already has an interworld love story. In fact, it has 3 of them. First Doctor Ido finds Alita and repairs her. He comes to love her like a daughter. Then Alita meets Yugo, a boy who is 100% flesh (as opposed to a cyborg), and she falls in love with him. Later on, she meets another 100% human named Figure 4, and falls in love with him too.

Aa aa aa nnd James Cameron has officially lost his chance to direct Battle Angel Alita.
Elysium is pretty much step for step the same story and aesthetic as Battle Angel Alita. I love B.A.A., it's my favorite sci-fi story of all time, with Alita herself being one of my favorite characters of all time (regardless of genre). While I acknowledge Elysium is a rip off, it is not a cheap rip off. That's why I'm excited, and optimistic.

This doesn't seem like so much of a rip off, Matt Damon's character isn't a robot who learns to be human in fact it kinda seems like the opposite. But yeah, James Cameron really needs to get off his ass with Battle Angel: Alita, especially after this.

@drewmanning

Alita isn't a robot. She didn't "learn to be human". She is a cyborg. She was human before, and underwent the procedure to become a cyborg. Just like Matt Damon's character in Elysium.

@drewmanning: Alita is more like a child at the beginning, rather than a non-human. She doesn't learn to become human throughout the course of the series. Rather, she learns to become an adult. Also, Alita isn't a robot in the strictest sense. She is a cyborg, born human, and modified into a cyborg later in life. Her brain is still 100% human. In the same sense, Matt Damon's character is a human who becomes a cyborg when the exo-suit is installed onto his body.

Another similarity is that

Another similarity is that Tiphares is a circular shape overall, and so is the sky-city in Elysium. Also, Tiphares deliberately has a lot of Aryan blondes, and Jodie Foster looks very Aryan in this movie. For more similarities, check Silverload's comment.

Sorry guys, I got egg on my face on this one. Can we all just agree that James Cameron really dropped the ball on this one? I mean is a post Elysium BA:A movie even possible at this point?

@drewmanning: That's the point of my top post. James Cameron has officially lost his chance to direct B.A.A.

I mean, if Prometheus derailed At the Mountains of Madness, you can bet Elysium has derailed Battle Angel Alita.
However, James Cameron is a fatheaded pig who might just try to outdo Elysium and make B.A.A. anyway. I don't support that action.

Looks Awesome! And yes, this may be the closest well ever come to a Battle Angel movie with Cameron directing a movie every 10 or 12 years.

Yes, you're right. This has been noted for a long time. But while Elysium has almost assured that we'll never see a Battle Angel Alita movie, I am okay with it. Battle Angel Alita is my favorite sci-fi story of all time, but Neill Blomkamp is an awesome visual storyteller, so I not only respect Elysium, but am looking forward to it. Elysium is a rip off, but it's not poorly done.

Holy, shit. The synopsis not only sounds like Battle Angel Alita, but the trailer looks almost like a live action version of Battle Angel. Only with Matt Damon instead of a hot cyborg. Though it seems like Damon becomes a cyborg in this too.

Who gives a f*** if this has a political message?

People either complain about a movie because it lacks originality, it's too politically motivated, or it's too comical. District 9 is easily one of the best science fiction films, this looks just as good.

Yes, heaven forbid any movie have a deeper message than just "pew pew pew, explosions, robots." All movies should be vapid, soulless Transformers reboots. Well don't worry, there's one of them coming out next year just for you, and I'm sure it'll have all the racist, hate-mongering, conservative undertones you crave.

vanity ruins, I bet you really must have enjoyed Damon's last movie. You know, the one about the evils of fracking that was proven to be complete BS, and had to be rewritten because of it. I don't mind a message, and I can't stand the Transformers films, or anything like them, but I will not sit through two hours of progressive propoganda very thinly disguised as Science Fiction.

I actually enjoy a good sci fi movie with topical social commentary, but this stinks of blatant liberal progressive socialist propaganda. I pretty much enjoyed District 9, but I felt they went way overboard with the f word every 2 seconds. When you grow up and have kids of your own you might understand a little better. But prepare yourself... you MAY have to see a vagina before that happens.
