Matthew McConaughey wanted for Randall Flagg role in The Stand adaptation

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

This coming Monday, Matthew McConaughey could win an Emmy for his fantastic performance on True Detective; which would sit perfectly next to the Oscar he won earlier this year for DALLAS BUYERS CLUB. A man of talent and class, it’s no wonder he’s in high demand these days. He will be starring in Christopher Nolan's anticipated epic INTERSTELLAR this November, which will only insure we all like this guy even more. So it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. wants McConaughey to play a role in the upcoming feature film adaptation of Stephen King's THE STAND.

He's wanted for the role of the demonic figure Randall Flagg in the film which is set to be directed by Josh Boone (THE FAULT IN OUR STARS). Boone made headlines back in June when he said the movie was going for an R-rating and 3-hour runtime; yes to all of that. Flagg (aka “The Walkin’ Dude”, “The Dark Man”, “The Hardcase”, “Ageless Stranger”, and “The Man In Black”) is a recurring character in a lot of Stephen King's novel; he first appeared in “The Stand" and then he was the main antagonist of "The Dark Tower", which interestingly enough has been in development hell for years trying to become a feature or TV show.

I trust McConaughey would work perfectly as Flagg; the character has been called the “the personification of evil”, a demonic figure who wreaks havoc after a plague kills most of the population. If you watched True Detective and watched closely at the interrogation scenes with McConaughey, you know the man can play with fire. Do you think he has what it takes?
