Max Martini says Pacific Rim 2 could be a prequel with more about Herc's family history

Dec. 23, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

Actor Max Martini has been crowned "Badass of the Year" by Empire, and while talking to the magazine, he was asked about a sequel to Guillermo Del Toro's PACIFIC RIM. Martini is contracted for another film, and he says he isn't sure if a second film will be a sequel or a prequel (if it gets made), but if it's the later, thinks it'll have a bit more about Herc's family history.

It's funny, I fell in love with this character. The key component was this relationship I had with my son, exploring the dysfunction and the loss, so where does Herc go from here? I don't know. It'll be interesting to see where Guillermo (del Toro) and Travis Beacham take it. I don't know if it's a prequel or a sequel, but if it's a prequel you'll learn more about Herc's family history. But Guillermo has such a vivid imagination, it could go anywhere.

Herc and his son Chuck (Robert Kazinsky) were probably my favorite characters in the film, and if there is going to be a second movie, I'd love to see more about their family. However, there's no guarantee another film will happen. Although it did over $400 million worldwide, only $102 million of its gross came from domestic theaters. Guillermo Del Toro did say in October that he's working on the script for a sequel, and has previously made comments about his plans for future films.

But nothing has been greenlit yet, and Del Toro is going to be pretty busy with some of his upcoming projects. I wouldn't say a movie prequel or sequel to PACIFIC RIM is dead, but if another film does get approved, it'll probably be a while before it ends up in theaters.

Max Martini can be seen next in David Ayers' SABOTAGE with Arnold Schwarzenegger on April 11th, 2014, and he'll also be appearing in the film adaptation for FIFTY SHADES OF GREY.

Extra Tidbit: Would you rather see a sequel or a prequel to PACIFIC RIM? I'm leaning towards prequel.

"Pacific Rim" was a piece of shit, so why even bother with adding to it's ridiculous and cliche story?

In a sequel I would expect that mankind has eventually made it possible for one person to pilot a Jaeger. Their development shift from creating huge metal monstrosities to mass produced units, with each pilot connected to a bio-engineered AI mainframe, effectively negating the need of a second pilot on each unit. Think of it as 'massively drifting with a cloud computer'. Of course the catch is that the AI is made from cloned kaiju tissues mixed with human DNA. Therefore there's always the fear

I just hope something official happens with this Pacific Rim was the best blockbuster of the Summer.

In all honesty, I though Herc was one of the better characters. If they make another movie, maybe mix the past with the future. Show the ckstory but progress the story forward as well.

I'd prefer a sequel to a prequel. Some flashback scenes might not be bad if they do a sequel. I'm just really hoping to see more from this universe. I still think that they should make a tv show or web series covering the time from K-Day to either Gipsy's run in with Knifehead or the part where Stacker brings Raleigh back. I'd like to see a sequel where either the aliens straight return or Newt goes evil with his alien info or possibly the government uses the info that Newt has to try & invade

Perhaps a good way to go with this...

...would be to make it a proper sequel with Del Toro's suitably nutty ideas for drifting Kaiju and whatnot, but intercut with prequel aspects about Herc that inform the sequel story. Like The Godfather 2 but with giant robots, just like the movie gods intended.

I prequel wouldn't progress the story whatsoever and the stakes would have to be much, much lower.

Go full sequel where Earth has been building even bigger Jaeger's like made for the past 5 years on the chance the Kaiju come back. And they do. The Jaeger's are twice as big, but the Kaiju are 4 times as big yielding flaming swords and diamond-plated battle armor....because why not.

I'd love that. A Band of Brothers with Jaeger pilots would rock.

A prequel sounds pretty boring, but if they're trying to avoid a direct sequel they could make a parallel movie. Maybe show other events and battles that took place in other parts of the world slightly before or during the main arc of Pacific Rim. Call it Pacific Rim: Some Cool Subtitle Here.

It's a shame that another PR movie hasn't been greenlit already, seeing as it's a visually amazing film that was a LOT of fun to watch.

I would rather see a sequel at this point than a prequel. Or they could somehow do both by via flashback. That way they could bring back Idris Elba, Kazinsky, etc. in some short capacity.

I just really hope that we get confirmation of a sequel rather sooner than later.

A Godfather II style sequel! I also want a sequel that expands what seems to be an amazing universe!
