McFarlane in Oz

09.01.2009

Todd McFarlane is on a roll as of late with working on a new SPAWN script, as well as the amazing show coming back to television. Go ahead and add his gruesome version of WIZARD OF OZ to the list.

The film which is currently being developed already has a rumor running around that NEW MOON blondie Dakota Fanning is in talks to play Dorothy. This was a first time for McFarlane hearing such news, "I haven't heard that. If we just do a sugary sweet Dorothy that everybody has seen over and over for 50 years, as far as I'm concerned, that's too obvious. I'm happy to go with whoever will get the most people in the seats, but sometimes that can change from month to month." This is quite true, but would Dakota fill seats when it's ready to film? Does it really matter if the movie looks amazing? Fanning was a great child actress, and I can only see her getting better as the years go by, no matter what projects she picks.

McFarlane says that his OZ will be a lot darker, "I think my 'twisted' version is a little scary for Warners to embrace. He continued, "I essentially pitched 'Lord of the Rings.' It was big, it was bold and it wasn't a very pretty place. It was badass! There's no Baum in it at all." The idea comes from McFarlane's "Twisted Land of Oz" figures, which are anything but sugary sweet.

The SPAWN creator understands that in order to remake something great, you have to make it your own and maybe not necessarily just dark, "What's going to get a new generation to go look at Oz is if you reinvent it on some level. Not every single level, but some of them have to be new. Shut down your preconceived notions. For me, you should be looking at an isolated movie, that, oh, by the way, happens to be Oz. To get the new audience you're going to have to put some edges on this thing." I know I am a tad bias because I am such a huge fan, but I really think that McFarlane can turn OZ into something inventive and just as memorable. I guess we'll just have to see.

Extra Tidbit: For a second there I thought McFarlane was saying that he originally pitched an idea for LOTR. That would have been some crazy shit. I promise I'm not on a LOTR kick.
