McG options teenage girl angst drama DUFF
When I first heard this news, I thought that McG was either A) making a movie about the deliciousness of fictional beer or B) an expose about secret seedy life of Hilary Duff. Unfortunately, neither of these are true, and DUFF is a story about a teenage girl dealing with high school drama, something McG can remember from his days working on The OC (in my estimation, the only good thing he’s ever done).
DUFF stands for Designated Ugly Fat Friend, which is a term that I think started in an internet forum somewhere that will surely be popularized in high schools all around the country once this book/movie catches on.
Here’s the official plot of the book by Kody Keplinger, which isn’t even out until September.
Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn’t think she’s the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She’s also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her “Duffy,” she throws her Coke in his face. But things aren’t so great at home right now. Desperate for a distraction, Bianca ends up kissing Wesley. And likes it. Eager for escape, she throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with Wesley. Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out that Wesley isn’t such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she’s falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.
I love how in the beginning of the synopsis she’s way too smart to fall for the charms of “man-slut and slimy” Wesley, but by the middle she kisses him and at the end of the paragraph she’s already fallen for him. So the moral of the story, treat girls like shit, and they’ll be uncontrollably attracted to you, especially if they’re DUFFs.
