Meet the next generation of The Griswolds in the first images from Vacation

04.13.2015

Like GHOSTBUSTERS and GREMLINS, a sequel/reboot to the National Lampoon VACATION series was inevitable. Some find it to be ill-advised since the movies have not been all that great since CHRISTMAS VACATION even though VEGAS VACATION is a bit underrated. So, when word came down that Ed Helms would play an adult version of Rusty, fans were divided. When Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo agreed to return, more people were convinced.

In the first official image from the new VACATION, we see Ed Helms as Rusty alongside his wife Debbie, played by Christina Applegate. Chase and D'Angelo are pictured but it is hard to tell if Chevy is playing his character or just not happy to be in the movie at all. Not pictured are Leslie Mann as Audrey Griswold or Chris Hemsworth as her husband, Stone Crandall. We also have yet to see Keegan-Michael Key, Regina Hall, Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson, Nick Kroll, or any of the other cast-members.

Here's the synopsis for VACATION.

Following in the footsteps of his father Clark (Chevy Chase) and hoping for some much-needed family bonding, a grown-up Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms) surprises his wife, Debbie (Christina Applegate), and their two sons, James (Skyler Gisondo) and Kevin (Steele Stebbins), with a cross-country trip back to America's favorite family fun park: Walley World, as it will be closing forever.

Directed by the team of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2), VACATION sounds like it could be a nice return to the plot of the original movie, but it will be a tough battle to try and compete with the Harold Ramis directed original. The studio seems to have confidence though as the release date has been bumped up from the original November slot to the prime summer date of July 31st.

Helms said in EW that the movie really earns its R rating, so that makes me happy. Better hear some Lindsey Buckingham too!

As much as I hate to say it. I think Beverly D'angelo's "procedures" are going to be a distraction. She just doesn't look very good.

Why?

Why bring them back to Walleyworld? Why not explore a new park or something? Yeah, Chevy looks bored as shit in that picture.

I enjoyed Ed Helms on The Office (before Andy took over as boss) but everything since from him has been beyond annoying. Joel Mchale should have been Rusty or hell even bring back Galecki!! I personally would rather see Chevy lead the movie as I still think he has it in him. I have a feeling his role will be all of 10 minutes in the final film which is a shame. Also why the hell is Beverly D'Angelo wearing some kind of creepy halloween mask over her beautiful face??? Same goes for Appelgate,

I've never gone out of my way to see a Vacation movie, I just used to come across them on cable as a kid. Feels wrong to break the tradition now.

On second thought...

Why are they IN Wally World?!? That means something went right... NOTHING is supposed to go right in these movies. The whole theme is comedy of errors, everything bad happening and spiraling out of control but in the most simplistic and sometimes gruesome ways.

I foresee this being like Dumb & Dumber To. Decent jokes on paper, but that don't quite work on film.

This could go either way. I like Applegate, but I hope Ed Helms isn't too Ed Helms-y. He was great in the first Hangover and when he was a smaller, supporting character in The Office. That's about it. Hope this turns out to be surprisingly funny.
