Updated: Mel Gibson among candidates sought to direct Suicide Squad sequel

02.16.2017

Mel Gibson Suicide Squad 2

UPDATE: At a HACKSAW RIDGE screening last night (via Batman-News), Gibson confirmed that he is indeed in talks with WB to take on the SUICIDE SQUAD sequel, but that it was a "first date" kind of scenario, so nothing is set in stone. Justin Kroll of Variety had a few updates of his own after the report first dropped. You can see his tweets, as well as the original video of Mel confirming the "first date" below...

First off, hell to the yes! Although SUICIDE SQUAD definitely had its fans, Warner Bros. is going to have to pull out all the stops to make sure that its upcoming sequel is a success on all fronts, and nabbing Mel Gibson (HACKSAW RIDGE) to direct would certainly be a great step in that direction.

THR reports that Warner Bros. are courting Mel Gibson to take the helm of the SUICIDE SQUAD sequel, but that there are other candidates up for the job as well, including Daniel Espinosa (LIFE). Talks are still in the early stages, but THR's sources state that Mel Gibson is "familiarizing himself with the material." After making a triumphant return with HACKSAW RIDGE, his first directorial outing in a decade, Gibson has been flooded with offers to both act in and direct a variety of projects, but the SUICIDE SQUAD sequel would certainly be an exciting choice. David Ayer, who directed the first installment, will of course remain involved in the DCEU as he's currently developing GOTHAM CITY SIRENS, a SUICIDE SQUAD spinoff which will star Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and showcase the "top female villains from the DC stable" including Catwoman and Poison Ivy.

This is far from a sure thing, but how would you folks feel about Mel Gibson taking the reins of SUICIDE SQUAD 2?

"Mel is great director!" "Mel Gibson has been in a lot of good movies." "Lethal Weapon movies are awesome!"

He has said some really awful things about women and Jewish ppl. Yes he is a talented actor and director but I can't get past the fact that he is a horrible person. Every time I see him at an event he looks drunk as hell. I don't think he is mentally stable or sober enough to take it on.

I said this at the time, and still believe Mel would've been ideal for Wonder Woman. Like most on here, I'm interested in about everything Mel is involved in and id like to see him do a comic book movie, but SS2 isn't needed for awhile. Superman will come back alive this year, and soon the JL will not only form as a team, but take on Darkseid (and beat him, in some fashion), so what's going to happen in SS2? What are they going to do that bats/supes/JL can't? They certainly aren't going to

Superman will come back alive this year, and soon the JL will not only form as a team, but take on Darkseid (and beat him, in some fashion), so what's going to happen in SS2? What are they going to do that bats/supes/JL can't? They certainly aren't going to be able to put up any kind of fight against the JL, if they try to go that way. Supes could take them all. Hell, bats prolly could. So storywise, Idk what they would do but basically correct the first one or make it more like a thunderbolts/x force thing. Tho I personally think it sucked, well I know it did, I recognize it has a lot of fans and success (and I enjoyed aspects of it as well), so a secret will be profitable and perhaps desired, I just don't know what they will be needed for when JL has formed and Supes returns.

Bats already threatened Waller to stop it, and said he'd use his friends. I think a film set in the Gotham/bat verse that explored Harley/Joker/death of Robin/deadshot would be cooler than just SS2. They could copy that animated film also.

Also, I've said this before, but I think the DCU has messed up so much already that instead of fighting darkseid (bc who is a real threat after that?) so soon, they should do like injustice and make Supes bad. They have already fd up his character, he hates doing good, so have him be the villain for a trilogy or so and go real crazy. That will separate you from marvel.

As far as Mel goes, he'd make this film more interesting, but if he just wants to work with Will in this format, let him direct the Batman film. Dead shot could be a villain or a hero really. Buuut, my problem with deadshot in the next bat film, and all the rumors ab the story is, they have hinted ab Robin being murdered in 2 films, and it's very interesting. Either tell that story in a prequel or have Jason Todd return for the next bat film. I don't understand why they wouldn't. The clues in the movie have been very intriguing, and the source material and animated film are great. End rant.

Sugar Tits! Yes please

Dumb to say a bad idea. Seriously you're an idiot if you think this is a bad idea. There are way worse directors so why not go with a proven one? Also I'm interested to see what he can do with it.

Its a bad idea to continue the DCEU. And an even worse idea for Mel to have his name attached to any of these multi million dollar turds.

Sadly...

Even great directors will be coaxed into making shitty movies, I mean I thought because Ayer was directing Suicide Squad that it would be decent...and it sucked ass. These movies are hardly made by the directors. But who knows, I hope they prove me wrong and let him make it the way he wants to.

DC Wishes

So basically to garner attention DC says Mel Gibson is in the talks to direct. Which really means we asked and he said no. He doesnt direct sequels, or series movies. He is a great director and has more original content in his pinky finger. DC wants attention. Plain and Simple. The DCEU is garbaaaaaaage.

He only directed 5 films and prior to Hacksaw Ridge, he hadn't directed a film since 2006. The sample is pretty small to claim he would never direct a series movie ever. Besides, Mel Gibson the actor was part of many sequels so there's no reason to think he has a prejudice against them.

If you're implying he needs the work, you're crazy. He took a hiatus from Hollywood for personal reasons. Mark my word, he will never direct this shit movie. DC brand is currently tarnished.

Not sure if you actually read the news DUUCKEE but Mel Gibson himself confirmed that he was talking to DC about it, they're on their first date. Lets see if DC gets lucky.

This is just a rumor. It won't happen. Gibson doesn't like superhero films or handling these types of tentpole ensembles (which is why he said no to Sly for the directing gig of Expendables 3). He also said on record that BvS 'was sh-t.' All-in-all, unless WB upsets the tone of the first film and makes a hard-edged R-rated and dramatic film - this won't happen.

I am all for comic book movies, but...

it would be a terrible idea to get Mel Gibson to direct this movie. First of all, no where near his style of film making. Second of all, if he directs this movie, then he will not be making another one of HIS bad-ass, amazing films. Lastly, the first movie was a dumpster fire, and he would be set up to fail. Let Mel Gibson make movies he actually cares about.

I didn't think about it like that. Maybe there is an offer for him if he does SS sequel, he will get funding for HIS next movie. I know that happens all the time with studios. Yea, the cast was great, just a poorly conceived story, and mismanaged use of the characters.

Mel Gibson is insane and he knows how to tell a good story

I'd say that's a perfect fit.

Seriously, I could see Gibson take this on for the $$$: it would help his rehabilitation as a director and to build up seed money and goodwill for his next passion project. SUICIDE SQUAD has some serious potential, and the first movie wasted so much of it. I'd like to see a monster director like Gibson interpret the material.

It probably won't happen, but it'll be a fun day or two of speculating all the same. Would be great if he did it, though.

Mel's name has been tossed around a few times to direct franchise films, like an Iron Man sequel or an Expendables sequel. They never seem to happen, and I think this will be the same, just another rumor. I'm a fan so I'll see anything he directs though.

Hmm...

Mel is my favorite man in show biz but I think I'd rather have him doing original films... Now if he is doing this to get WB to pay for a project than I'm all for it. I just wouldn't think this would be something he'd wanna take on.

That's an interesting thought. Maybe he's using this as leverage to get WB to pay for his Viking epic (I think it's called Berzerker?) that he's been talking about for years.

This would be AMAZINg news on every level if he were actually up for directing a comic book film after dismissing Dawn of Justice prior.

But if not him and/or Ayer, then Joe Carnahan would make for a great choice too.

I cant in a million years picture him.saying yes to this! However, if it happens.. hell ya!

But i was also super psyched for Ayer to take the reigns, and the end result was a bit disappointing, by no fault.of Ayers i assume... can DC and Warner step back and let a director OWN the material??

Yes to Gibson! Espinosa is basically on Ayer's level so meh

Gibson's version would almost have to be R so definite yes on all fronts. Still can't believe WB hired Ayer to direct the spin-off considering how terrible SS was despite great potential.

I think the fact that they brought Ayer back for another film says, on some level, that WB knows it was themselves that fucked Squad up with meddling in post-production and forcing a rushed production, and the blame can't entirely be put on Ayer.

It also doesn't hurt that Suicide Squad made a shit load of money.

He's a better director than Zack Snyder, Ben Affleck, and David Ayer. Probably better than Reeves too, the guy ultimately hired for WB's Batman movie.
